Damien kept one hand in his pocket.

A couple of seconds passed with his eyes not leaving the screen, but then, finally, what he heard next was a beep that left one side of his face squeezed up.

"Call declined."

Not missed.

Not unanswered.

“Declined?”

The notification sat there like a slap to his face.

He stared, his eyes didn't blink, didn’t twitch. But something inside him did.

It felt like a sting behind his ribs as he murmured the words again.

It was not a mistake. Isla had pressed that button intentionally.

She did it herself; it was completely willful, and for the first time since he could remember, she had chosen to treat him like some sort of distraction.

His thumb remained on the screen, as if considering a reply, but no.

Without warning, he tapped the side button with a little more force than was needed and then shoved the phone deep into his pocket, rising sharply to his feet.

The chair made a scratchy sound behind him.

After that, he started to walk out of his office with

Isla stood still, her eyes wide, her lips parted like she was deciding between fight or flight. When the silence stretched a little too long, it appeared to anger Damien the more so he lashed out and gestured even more harshly;“Well? Are you going to deny it, or are you just going to keep standing there like like….”“Yes, I was with him,” Isla burst out, voice fierce, unashamed. She had been holding herself together since dinner, the twisted emotions and puzzles had left her going crazy, and now, for her messy day to get crowned with Damien blaming her for the very same confusion he started, was the height of it.Damien didn’t move after she said this.He ground his teeth; he had expected it to sting, but not much. But Isla wasn’t finished. “And I didn’t sneak around to do it, either.”Damien stiffened further. Then, like an injured tiger, he clenched his teeth to declare “You’re my wife…”Isla scoffed with her eyebrows lifted. “Wife? But you remind me every time that it’s just a

Just a few hours after the fun moment they shared in the boutique, Caden had gone further to ask Isla to have dinner with him while they sat quietly in the car, on his way out. He sounded so calm and sincere, without pressure, and Isla looked at him, observing how he seemed so much more serious and so much less playful. Then, after a short pause, with a single nod and a faint smile, she agreed. They arrived at the place at exactly 6:47 PM.The sky was already shifting into hues of burnt orange. Isla, unfastened her seatbelt, stepped down from his car, and instinctively turned her head toward what she assumed would be their usual cozy lunch bistro, but the building before her made her pause. Her gaze floated from the glowing rooftop down to Caden, who was now standing beside her, watching her like he had been waiting for this exact moment all day.She blinked twice in confusion.“This… isn’t where I thought we were going,” she murmured in half-wonder, wearing a tentative smile.“No,

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 39: Blood and Bastard

It was Friday morning. Damien resumed for the day not too long ago; he had touched a few things that truly needed his attention in his office and then allowed silence to claim the rest of his time. For over fifteen minutes now, he had been sitting in the same position, his back against the leather of his chair, while next to him was a cup of coffee, looking untouched. His mind was clogged with thinking about the recent controversy he was dealing with and the explosions the trending article was causing across the media. Particularly that awful headline;“The Bastard Son of Richard Blackwood.”Him…Damien Blackwood. A Bastard? His jaw flexed tightly at the sound of that word. His fingers tapped rhythmically against each other, and he might have continued staring if the sudden vibration from his phone had not sounded. He didn’t flinch much, though. All he did was simply turn his head slowly toward it, his gaze sliding to the screen. The caller was one of his Private Investigators, Miles

Nate awoke to a weird kind of calmness on Thursday morning. He stretched out slowly, and after that, a deep yawn followed. When he turned to glance beside him, Vanessa was not currently on the bed.He didn’t need to ask where she was.She had probably gone for her morning routine, which was sitting down by the poolside for a few minutes with sunglasses too big for her face, and a smoothie she never finished. That was classic Vanessa, always committed to doing the absolute least, as long as it looked effortless.Nate gasped and decided to think of something more… positive.A perfect source of that would be Damien and his recent troubles. The news was already out and disturbing the airwaves. He had not even needed to read the articles; the headlines alone were more than enough. And of course, he could also see that Damien was already beginning to move quickly as always. Search results were already shifting. PR damage control is already showing in full force. It was clear. But this tim

Damien’s lips crushed against Isla’s own hungrily, as she opened up her mouth to receive his tongue even deeper. His hands circled the curve of her waist. And slowly he guided, until the back of her knees started to meet the edge of the bed. While all these were happening, Isla’s mind was screaming for clarity and the use of common sense, but her body, on the contrary, was trembling from the confusion of wanting something she knew she shouldn’t.She didn’t understand how it had all happened so fast, his sudden rough pull that had taken her by surprise. And now, like somebody under a spell, she was pulling him closer, her lips answering his own like they were following something lost. Her heartbeat was growing louder by the second. Deep down, she knew this wasn’t right. It wasn’t smart. It wasn’t part of the deal. And yet…She couldn't stop herself, let alone Damien. The backs of her legs gave in, and she fell gently onto the bed. Damien followed without a word, mounting her as he d

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 36: No One Came

Damien was busy in his office on the afternoon of the following day. So busy that he couldn't even look at the clock, and he didn’t actually need to. For Damien, time has always been measured by performance, in deals closed and stocks rising. That was how he had built this empire in the first place. His head was still bowed in this manner when he noticed that his phone was ringing with an incoming call. Damien's brows pulled together with the slightest annoyance. He let out a vague, irritated sound before finally dragging his arm over to grab the phone. Flashing on the screen was the contact ID of his friend Collins. A knowing huff escaped him. “What now…” He muttered under his breath, more to himself than to the man calling, tapping the green icon without much enthusiasm. But before he could get a single word out, Collins’s voice urgently blared through the receiver, his tone heavy with a worry that was not typical of him at all. “Hey man, check your phone. You’re trending… and i

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 35: A Healthy Dose of Nostalgia

It has been two weeks now since Caden returned to the city. And with Isla having him around, it was like reliving the good old days over again.Caden appeared to have brought with him that part of her life that had not been touched by the mess and the chaos that now defined the rhythms of her new life.It gave her the life before Damien, before Vanessa, before Nate. Before all of them. She found herself remembering the times when Caden used to yank her out of her overfilled schedule with a cup of coffee and a smirk, telling her she was way too brilliant to be this boring. How he would make her laugh no matter how bad her day was going or was. They had been close. Too close, maybe. There was even a point when she once dared to hope that the flutter in her chest whenever he was around her meant something more. But funny enough, it was Caden himself who had insisted that they remained just friends. And somehow, it felt like those old, meaningful, fun years had been folded into seconds.

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 34: The Woman Who waited

The guest wing of the Damien's mansion was exceptionally quiet on this morning. Damien himself had since left for work and as for Isla, she was still up-stairs locked up as was usual with her nowadays, particularly with exchange that had happened yesterday between herself and Damien. However, somewhere in corner of the same room, sitted perfectly on the edge of a chaise with her back straight and one leg elegantly crossed was Isabella. Her phone was held gently to her ear as he seemed to talking to someone via call. But the tone she was speaking with was suspiciously low, edged with something like dark motive.“Yes,” She whispered first and then stopped to pause. Her eyes glancing around the room briefly, and expertly as if to be sure she was alone. And indeed there was no one else around. This realization made her shoulders drop more relaxedly. When she spoke again, her tone sounded a little firmer and yet a little quicker,“He’s starting to crack trust me… much easier than I thou
