ELVIS

I decided to work from my study today.

Going into the office would require a level of concentration I clearly didn't possess.

Last night was terrible.

Every time I managed to sleep, Hazel found her way into my dreams. My brain kept dragging me back to what happened between us, replaying pieces of it until I woke up frustrated with myself.

Twice, I got out of bed for water. The third time, I gave up trying to sleep altogether.

  • His Father’s Addction   CHAPTER 111

HAZELJarvis stared at William for another second before walking away.He got into his car and drove out of the car park, leaving us standing there.I watched his car disappear through the gate.Good riddance.“Let's go. I'm famished already.”I reached for William's hand, hoping to release some of the tension Jarvis had dumped on us.William gave me a small smile.“Let's go.”We got into his car and drove out.For the first few minutes, everything seemed fine. Music played softly from the speakers, and I was already thinking about food.William, however, was unusually quiet.I turned to him.“You okay?”“Yeah.”That yeah wasn't convincing. I watched the road ahead.I could guess what was bothering him.Jarvis had said a lot of rubbish, but one particular part had clearly stuck. He's not even your spec.I should have shut that down immediately.William cleared his throat.“You know you can turn me into your spec, right?”I turned sharply.“What?”“Tell me what you want me to do.”“Wi

HAZEL“If you ever try this shit again, I will report you for sexual assault.”Jarvis's hand was still pressed against his cheek.I pointed at him.“Scratch that. I will wait for you after work and beat you blue-black. You do realise the kind of strength I possess, right? Going to prison made me tougher too, so don't test me.”The fear on his face was glaring. For his own sake, he'd better take this last warning seriously. This wasn't our first rodeo.Years ago, I had fought a man who intended to rip him off. Jarvis had seen me in action. He knew I wasn't one of those women who threatened people and went home to practise what she should have done in the mirror.I could fight, and I had very little patience left for him. When he finally removed his hand from his cheek, the side of his face where my palm landed had turned reddish.I scoffed.“Just one slap and you're blushing this much. Imagine if I punch you.”His mouth opened but he was too startled to say a word“Out.”He turned an

HAZEL“What? Hazel, you did what?”I brought my coffee mug closer to my lips and took a sip, buying myself time.Betty's eyes dropped to the necklace around my neck before returning to my face.“I said yes to William.”“I heard that part.” She put her mug on the kitchen counter. “I'm asking why.”I sighed.Last night, William had officially asked me to be his girlfriend. And when I say officially, I mean William had gone all out.Flower petals, candles, dinner, and enough romance to make me wonder when he'd found the time to arrange everything. It was beautiful.I just hadn't cared much about the decorations. My attention had been on the man standing in front of me, nervous despite already knowing I'd agreed to give us a chance. He'd still wanted to ask properly, and I'd said yes.The gold necklace around my neck had been his gift afterwards. Simple, delicate and expensive enough for me to complain when he put it on me.He hadn't listened.By the time we got home, Betty was already as

ELVISI decided to work from my study today.Going into the office would require a level of concentration I clearly didn't possess.Last night was terrible.Every time I managed to sleep, Hazel found her way into my dreams. My brain kept dragging me back to what happened between us, replaying pieces of it until I woke up frustrated with myself.Twice, I got out of bed for water. The third time, I gave up trying to sleep altogether.Forty-eight hours without proper rest, an emotional confrontation with Doris, and what happened with Hazel should have been enough to knock me out for twelve hours; apparently not.I stared at the figures on my laptop.I'd been reading the same financial report for several minutes and couldn't remember a single number.I scrolled back to the top.I need to focus, there is work to do.A company in Melbourne needed my approval on a revised acquisition proposal, I had reports from two subsidiaries waiting, and Peter had already sent three messages asking when

CHAPTER 107EMILYThe housekeeper returned with a glass of water on a small tray.I watched her approach and changed my mind.“Sorry, can I get orange juice instead?”“Orange juice, ma'am?”“Yes, please.”“Okay, ma'am.”She took the water away and disappeared towards the kitchen.I adjusted my dress as I waited. If I had made a proper plan before coming here, I would've worn something shorter. Something easier to work with. I hadn't.Everything I'd decided to do had come together during the drive here, and now that I was actually sitting in Moses's house, courage was beginning to fail me.What are you doing, Emily?Did I really want to go down this route?I knew exactly what could happen if this went wrong. But Elvis was slipping away from my fingers.I could feel it.The years I'd spent without him had been some of the worst years of my life. I had rebuilt myself, yes. I had learned to live without him because I didn't have a choice. That didn't mean I wanted to do it again. Especial

  • His Father’s Addction   CHAPTER 106

EMILYThe colour drained from my face.I wanted to dig my nails into someone's eyes.Hazel had audacity. So much of it that a tiny part of me had to give her credit. Are you scared you've lost your touch on him, and just maybe he still wants some of my sugar? The words rang in my head. I hated her. This morning was supposed to be a good one.I woke up in a wonderful mood and decided to surprise my son at work. Jarvis had been so excited about getting this job, and I wanted him to know how proud I was of him.So, I got breakfast for him, nothing complicated.Drop by his workplace, spend a little time with him and leave. My morning had been perfect until I saw Hazel walking through those doors on six-inch heels, wearing a fitted dress that fell below her knees. What the hell was she doing here?Out of every company in thiscity, she had to work in the same one as Jarvis?I hated the coincidence.Even more, I hated the way I felt whenever I saw her.I needed to constantly remind myself th
