My hand was already on the doorknob, my fingers pressing in, the urge to tear that damn door open pulsing through my veins.

My face had all the shade of anger anyone had ever seen but my mind was everywhere and nowhere at all.

With my hand still on the door, I thought about the problem I would cause not just for myself but also for her when I walk in through that door. It would be me blowing our cover and shooting myself right in the leg.

At the same time, I wanted to defend her from his violence by any means possible. I was still in that position when I heard the maid’s whispers

“Don’t…” She said like she already knew the consequences of stepping in yet again and being an unsolicited hero.

Her whisper was the conviction that I needed to take my thoughts seriously and back away from interfering in their affairs but at the same time I was pissed that she had the effrontery to throw an order at me even though I knew that she never meant for it to sound like an order to me.

  • His Father's Obsession, I fell in love with his son.    Chapter 267: Carol’s POV

After putting the immediate enemies I was briefed about, I decided I was going to hunt down the moles who plotted the downfall of my father of whom Giovanni and his daughter were chief.Their names circled in my mind endlessly and I knew what had to be done. So I ordered my men to get me information on their whereabouts and was told they were on the run.One fateful morning, I stepped into a plain outfit with loose tunic, faded trousers, hair tucked under a headscarf. Luca turned when he noticed me and nearly choked.“You’re disguising yourself again?”“I’m hunting,” I said simply. “She won’t come to me. So I’ll go to her.”We took two of my best undercover men, moving through the city like ghosts. Street after street, market after market. I didn’t expect it to be easy because women like Veronica survived by disappearing when the real threat surfaced.Hours passed. My feet burned. My shoulders ached. Luca walked close, his eyes scanning with the precision of a hawk. Then, in a run

The tunnel let out a cold, stale gust of air the moment Luca and I pulled the cover open. Dust curled through the air like tiny ghosts, and for a second I hesitated because whatever was waiting inside felt old. Ancient, almost like time itself had been sitting down there, waiting to be disturbed. We looked down the hole that had a narrow step that led to yet another.“I’ll go first,” Luca whispered, though his voice carried the same tremor in my chest.“No,” I whispered back. “We go together.”So we climbed down, one cautious step at a time, palms sliding along damp walls. The moment our feet hit the floor properly, the lights flickered, buzzed and then flooded the tunnel with a warm glow that looked so golden.I looked around and saw treasure boxes in their dozens all stacked high, some covered with old clothes as if someone had tried to protect them from dust, or from prying eyes. There were weapons beside some, files beside others, and a faint scent of cedar that made me think

“What the hell is going on, huh? Why isn't he picking up?” Giovanni asked, looking clearly pissed. The tension in the room sharpened until it felt like the walls themselves were listening.Vince’s voice trembled as he tried again, desperate, hopeful in that foolish way only someone cornered could be.“If I do this,” he asked again, swallowing hard, “you’ll let us go, right? You’ll… you’ll let us walk free?”Giovanni snapped before he even finished.“Enough!” he barked, the sound bouncing off the concrete. “Get through with it already.”Vince flinched like the yell hit him physically. His lips pressed together, eyes darting helplessly toward his mother, Anna who lay slumped in the chair, breathing unevenly, her entire face drawn tight with pain. She shook her head weakly, silently begging him not to trust the devil holding the knife but it didn’t matter. Giovanni was already dialing again, tapping at the secure phone with growing irritation.“Is this the right number you gave me or ar

Veronica laughed wickedly as she shook her head at Anna. “Still talking, I see.”“Mom, are you okay?” Vince asked, struggling to free himself from the grip of the tight rope on his wrist and legs. The room felt smaller the longer they kept Anna tied to that metal chair. The smell of sweat and dust clung to the air, and every time she shifted, the ropes bit deeper into her skin. Her hand throbbed violently from the nail that had already been torn out. It wasn’t even pain anymore; it was something uglier, more like a pinch that crawled beneath her ribs and made her whole body tremble.Vince sat opposite her, wrists bound behind his back, face red and wet with helpless anger. He kept shaking his head like he still couldn’t believe this was happening, like any second now someone would rush in and cut them free but the room stayed quiet.Veronica walked back to them with renewed zeal and a cold heart. She moved with the confidence of someone who thought the world belonged to her, her boo

Veronica didn’t answer the question either of them had thrown at her. She just kept pacing around as she gave that cold, detached stare she used when she was deciding whether to step on something or study it first. Then, with a slow curl of her lip, she scoffed, as if the whole situation amused her more than it should have. Anna barely had time to brace herself before Veronica closed the distance and grabbed a fistful of her hair. She yanked hard so hard that Anna let out a sharp, unfiltered cry. The pain shot straight down her spine, blooming behind her eyes. It wasn’t just a tug, it was punishment and possession. A reminder of who had the power here.Vince lurched forward despite the ropes around his wrists, his voice cracking. “Touch her again and I swear…”He didn’t finish. Rage had already filled the air like gasoline, and his threat lit it.Veronica gave a loud and shrill, if not almost gleeful laughter that bounced off the dusty warehouse walls and made every part of the mo
