Veronica disregarded her father’s motions to come towards him and retreated back to the door as though wanting to walk out on him. She only paused when he made a statement urging her to get back in and stop being childish.

“Am I?” She asked, halting beside the door for a moment longer after Antonio left.

Her arms were crossed over her chest, her lips were pursed and her thoughts spiraled to the moon and back.

The conversation she’d eavesdropped on wasn’t only unsettling, it cracked curiosity and a bit of annoyance open inside of her, especially Antonio’s refusal to respond to her greeting.

She turned to her father, still seated behind his desk like a war general planning his next conquest.

“What was that all about?” She asked, eyebrows raised and her tone sharp with suspicion that it had something to do with her based on the fact that the term ‘union’ was mentioned in the conversation she had eavesdropped on.

Giovanni shot her a look that gave answers about who should question who

I slipped quietly into the kitchen through the back entrance, the one that didn’t connect to the living room where Antonio usually lounged during the day. The kitchen was unusually quiet and it gleamed as if it had just been scrubbed from top to bottom. Clara was nowhere to be found, which was odd. She was always here at this hour, humming some old tune as she chopped or stirred or fussed about something.I scanned the space again just to be sure that it was still empty. With a small sigh, I walked over to the counter and pulled out a ripe pineapple bulb from the fruit basket. The skin felt rough beneath my fingers as I grabbed a knife and headed to the sink. I turned on the tap, rinsed the fruit, and began peeling it slowly, careful not to nick my fingers. Where did Clara go? I wondered as I carved away the spiky skin, letting the pieces drop into the waste bowl beside me.The sunlight poured in through the windows, bathing the counter in a soft gold glow as everything felt peace

Antonio was in the middle of a light conversation with Marco when his phone buzzed in his pocket. He slid it out and saw Giovanni’s name flash across the screen. ‘Meet me at the usual spot.’ That was it, no greeting, no context. It was the classic Giovanni. He chuckled quietly, already guessing Giovanni had something brewing. Just as he was slipping the phone back into his pocket, the front door clicked open and Luca stepped inside, dressed in his usual sharp slacks and a crisp white shirt, sleeves rolled up to the elbows. His tie hung loosely around his neck, like he hadn’t even bothered tightening it this morning. He looked unsettled and that wasn’t like Luca. He never came home this early. Hell, he barely came home at all when work had him by the throat. Antonio checked his watch and saw it was a little past two.“You’re back early,” He stated casually, turning just enough to catch his expression. “Is that normal for you now?”Luca blinked at him, caught off guard. “Since when d

“Having issues with your Dad?” Her mum asked but there was no reply. She never liked to persist for a long time or poke nose into things, the best she would do was walk away and act as though the challenge before never existed but today’s own was different she stood at the door post waiting for Veronica to give her a reply.Veronica sat hunched at the edge of her bed, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her skirt, her eyes red-rimmed and shimmering with tears that threatened to spill out if her buttons were pressed one more time. Her mother stepped inside with an air that filled the whole room. She was always like that, the clack of her designer, her slippers echoing too loudly against the floor. She wore that same sleeveless champagne blouse that hugged her perfect waist and those high-waisted trousers that always screamed, ‘I’m still young, still desirable.’Veronica looked at her and wondered where she was headed again dressed like that but she dared not ask because her mother w

“El,” I said again, shifting upright, “you’re whispering like someone’s out to get you. What is it?”“I need to tell you something very important…”“Well, start talking already because you are putting me in a heavy suspense and you know how much I dislike suspense of this sort,” I muttered. “Hold on, Carol,” She replied, her tone still low and her voice sounding like it had been blown by a wild wind. “I didn’t want to blurt this out if you weren’t alone…”“Now, you are giving me chills, El,”“I know but…” there was bang from her end and her voice steadied.“Wait. Give me a second,” I told her and immediately glanced toward my door, slightly startled by the sound of voices down stairs.I slipped the phone under my robe, careful not to hang up, and padded across the cold floor in silence. My hand hesitated on the doorknob for just a beat, then I turned it slowly and cracked the door open.Voices drifted in from down the hall just like I had heard from my room. I poked my head out of my

I sat there on the edge of the bed, my arms hugging my knees, the sheets tangled around my ankles like shackles. My skin crawled and I felt unclean, not just on the outside but deep in the very pit of my soul. The mere fact that Antonio had touched me with those same hands that had caressed other ladies, ruled people ruthlessly, destroyed lives, and carried the stench of violence and pride left me feeling some type of way in my body.He was my husband but he was almost getting estranged in my heart. I didn’t even know what disgusted me more, the smugness on his face when he walked out like nothing had happened, or the fact that I had laid there, helpless and too paralyzed to fight him off my body.My whole body trembled as I sat up and forced myself to move. The moment my feet hit the cold tiles, I felt a little more alive. I staggered to the bathroom and closed the door behind me. The silence inside the marble-tiled space was all I wanted deep in my soul because it was sterile, spo

Giovanni’s shoes clicked hard against the marble tiles as he stormed out of his study, aiming straight for Veronica’s room, the anger in his chest boiling hotter with every step. The conversation with Antonio echoed in his head, each word hitting him in the face. “A box of wine… a fucking box of wine, sent weeks ago, apparently with strings tied to it that I hadn’t even known existed,” He murmured, smacking his hands together. When he arrived at the doorpost of Veronica’s room, he didn’t knock, he just pushed the door open with such force that it smacked against the wall, jolting Veronica where she stood in front of the full-length mirror.“Papa?” She spun around, startled, clutching her phone against her chest.Giovanni’s eyes scanned her quickly curled hair, nude heels and a soft silk blouse tucked into high-waisted jeans. From the way the lip gloss sat gracefully on her lips and her perfume oozed out effortlessly, it was evident she was going somewhere, and she hadn’t even told
