Chapter 2

Author: Cutie Kitty
Keaton's face lit up.

I let out a cold laugh and shook my head.

Did Evie seriously think she could learn this overnight?

If it were that easy, the client wouldn't need us. Keaton wouldn't have made it Orion's core project.

Evie caught my laugh and instantly played victim.

"Tessa, I know you're mad about losing the project, but I just wanted a chance to prove myself to Mr. Smyth. Why do you always act like you're better than me?

"Yeah, I speak my mind. That's on me. If I messed up, you could've just told me. Why give me attitude? I'm not that petty. I can take criticism."

Then she squeezed out two tears.

And shifted just enough for Keaton to see.

Sure enough, the second Keaton saw her tears, his expression softened.

"Tessa Thorne, did you already forget what I just said? Or are you trying to get yourself fired? Check your attitude. No wonder your team's so unprofessional. They learned it from you. Write me a ten-page reflection and have it on my desk before the day's over."

I clenched my fists.

My teammates defended me for all of two seconds, and somehow they were the unprofessional ones.

But Evie?

She strolled in late, left early, and never had to clock in. She skipped work whenever she felt like it. Even when she tanked a project and cost the company money, nothing happened.

Me?

I spent countless late nights landing Orion a $10 million investment.

One second late. One missed punch.

That was enough for Keaton to mark me absent, yank the VP position he'd promised me, accuse me of breaking company policy, slash my pay, and demote me.

Now, after hearing nothing but Evie's side of the story, he'd dumped me into entry-level sales.

Super professional.

Guess I should be ashamed. My bad.

Then Keaton pulled out a gift box and handed it to Evie.

"You're taking over the project, so consider this a little encouragement. I know you'll do great."

Evie opened the box.

Inside was a limited-edition jewelry set.

The room instantly buzzed.

"Isn't that set over a hundred grand? Mr. Smyth really knows how to spoil people."

"I'm so jealous of Ms. Larsen. With Mr. Smyth backing her, she's set."

My eyes locked on the necklace in Evie's hands.

I knew that set.

I'd wanted it forever, but the price always stopped me. Keaton found out and kept promising he'd buy it for me someday.

He never did.

Yesterday, I'd found the receipt at home.

I'd actually thought he was planning to surprise me.

Turns out...

It was never meant for me.

Keaton looked around the room.

"From now on, follow Evie's example. Perform well, and you'll be rewarded the same way. And let me be clear one last time—don't pull what Tessa did. Seniority doesn't give you the right to bully new employees. If it happens again, there won't be a warning."

The second we walked into the courthouse, the clerk recognized me."I already told you. We can't process your divorce unless you have proof the marriage has broken down or both spouses are here in person.""I'm not alone."I cut her off and stepped aside. She looked at Keaton, paused for a second, then handed us two forms. That short exchange was all it took.Keaton finally realized something was off.He stared at me, stunned."Tessa... when did you file for divorce?"I answered like it was nothing."The day you had dinner with Evie, lied about working late, and gave me the ring she didn't want... I decided to divorce you."He opened his mouth to argue.Nothing came out.In the end, he didn't say a word. The paperwork went through fast.Less than two hours later, we walked out with our divorce decree. Two hours. That was all it took to erase decades together. It almost felt absurdly easy. The second we stepped out of the courthouse, Keaton got impatient."Now that t

I didn't say a word. What Keaton didn't know was I'd built a security protocol into the flash drive.Once it was accessed from three different IP addresses, it wiped itself.Everything was gone.On top of that, the latest project files had already been deleted. There was no saving this project."Keaton, instead of wasting your time on me, you'd better start figuring out how to come up with that billion-dollar penalty."He stared at me.Completely stunned. Before, I would've fixed everything before he even had to ask.But not anymore. There was nothing left between us.No reason to keep sacrificing for him.His face fell. His eyes turned red.He thought I was still angry about losing the project, so his voice softened."Tessa, don't do this. Once this is over, I'll make you vice president, okay? And didn't you always want to see the Northern Lights? As soon as we deliver the project, we'll go."I laughed.Did he really think I knew nothing?"The Northern Lights? Weren

Keaton turned to me.Remembering the project had been mine first, he went cold."Tessa, I'm giving you one chance to fix your mess. Finish this project in three days and make sure the handoff goes smoothly. Do that, and I'll give you your position back."I laughed.Cold and sharp."No need. I quit."Even now, he still looked down on me.Like he could snap his fingers and I'd fall in line.He still hadn't realized none of this was my fault.Fine.I'd make him face the truth. And I'd make him see Evie for who she really was.I nodded toward the projector. My team immediately played the footage of everything Evie had done after taking over the project. The second it started, the room went dead silent.Everyone stared in shock.Keaton turned, a suspicious look crossing his face. The second the security footage came on, he froze.Just like everyone else. The time-lapse rolled.Day after day, Evie's workstation sat empty. As the days flew by, she never showed up in the p

After Nova Corp's team left, Evie rushed over and snatched the flash drive off the floor.I'd picked that drive for a reason.Shockproof. Blast-resistant. Fireproof. Waterproof. She still couldn't deal, so she jammed it into the nearest computer."No. This has to be a glitch. I worked so hard on this project. There's no way it bombed. It has to be the computer."Exactly.The computer didn't even make it thirty seconds before the screen went black with a nasty crackle. Then the surge took out every computer in the office.Smoke curled up everywhere. That sharp, burnt-plastic stink hit fast, and everyone started coughing. The mess finally yanked Keaton back to reality. He spun around and slapped Evie twice.Only then did it hit him. This wasn't a nightmare.Evie clutched her face and sobbed, "Tessa set this up. She had to! She's always hated me. She wanted me humiliated in front of everyone, so she messed with the flash drive and framed me. Mr. Smyth, you have to believe me

I smiled."It's simple. Didn't you just give Evie a brand-new laptop? We can use that one—"Before I could finish, Evie cut me off.She balled her fists, her eyes already shimmering with tears."Mr. Smyth, she's always looked down on me. She's obviously trying to set me up. She's mad I took the project, so now she's getting back at me."Please don't believe her. There are plenty of laptops in the office. Why does it have to be mine? The one you just gave me? Can't you tell what she's trying to do?"It's not that I can't part with the laptop. I just can't stand seeing your gift ruined because of Tessa."Ruined?Using my husband's gift was somehow ruining it?Was this really how she wrapped Keaton around her finger?I let out a cold laugh."Believe me or don't. I've said what I needed to say. The choice is yours."Keaton looked at the wrecked laptop on the floor. Then he made his decision."Evie. Hand over the laptop."Evie shot me a resentful glare before reluctantly pull

Mr. Linden's face went dark. "This is what your company calls a finished project?"You must think we're idiots. We came here to discuss extending the deadline, and this is what you hand us?"The project isn't even due for another three days. We came in good faith, but you've shown none."This partnership is over."Your company is in breach of contract. Per our agreement, you owe us ten times the penalty."One billion dollars."He threw the project file at Keaton's feet.Keaton stared at the scattered laptop parts, his face white. His throat worked.Excuses flashed across his face, but not one made it out.Evie recovered first. She cleared her throat and jumped in."How is this our fault? Your laptop couldn't handle the data. We finished the project early. If something went wrong during delivery, that's on you. Why blame us? Use another computer. Then we'll see whose fault it is."She sounded so sure that Nova Corp's team exchanged uneasy looks. For a second, they actually
