TARIK

Teague's forward sits at the top of my screen Tuesday morning with one line above it. Please see below and advise on response.

Under it is Sophia's request, three sentences long. She wants the supporting documentation for the Calloway Street reference, so her pricing rests on the same basis as ours. There is no adjective in it and no edge. I read it the way I'd read it if it came from Harlow.

I almost manage that.

Marissa sets a coffee at my elbow and leaves without a word, her glas

  • His Greatest Regret   Chapter 58

TARIKIvy slides a sheet of paper across Elena's kitchen table before I have my coat off."Tarik, look. I drew the mist machine."It's Sunday evening, and the house still smells faintly of the rain we both tracked in. Elena is at the far end of the table with Whitmore drawings open on her laptop, a revision set she's been marking up since before I arrived. Her hair is pinned up, and the sleeves of her gray sweater are pushed to the elbows. She lifts a hand in greeting without taking her eyes off the screen.I sit and pull the drawing toward me. A box, a coil of tube, a mask shaped like a teardrop, and a cloud above it all in blue pencil."That's good.""It's okay." Ivy kneels up on her chair, gap-toothed and frowning at her own work. "The boy's was better.""Which boy?""At the table. Yesterday. He was drawing it too, but carefully, with all the little tubes and the buttons and everything." She taps the box in her picture as if it disappoints her. "I asked him like a hundred questions

TARIKAt eleven-thirty, the hall smells of fresh coffee and the new plastic of tubing still in its packaging. Folding tables line the long wall, each with a machine on it and a hand-lettered card propped in front. Rows of chairs face a small stage nobody will use until four. Above the doors, a vinyl banner reads THE MOONLIGHT FOUNDATION in white letters on blue.Priya is already on her third lap of the room. She's been the foundation's director since the day it started, the one who answers the families' letters and sends me the numbers, and nothing in this hall got here without passing through her hands. She's small and quick, with sharp dark eyes behind tortoiseshell glasses and black hair twisted up with a pen stuck through it. She wears a lanyard over her gray cardigan and flat shoes made for a long day."You're early," she says without slowing down."You're earlier.""I'm supposed to be." She hands me a printed floor plan. "Six demonstration tables. Three therapists, two backups.

SOPHIAThe children's hospital two towns over keeps a room on Saturdays for parents of kids who have trouble breathing. I've been coming on some Saturdays for a while now. Not because Malik needs the room anymore, but because there are always parents arriving who are where I used to be. Sometimes they need information. Sometimes they just need someone who understands why they haven't slept. The father across the circle has been holding the same paper cup for ten minutes without drinking from it."The nurse says she can't give it to her unless the form's on file," he says. "The form's been on file since September. I watched them scan it.""Scan it where?" someone asks. "Her office or the main office?"He stops. "There's a difference?"Half the room nods. I'm one of them. The family room on the hospital's third floor smells of hand sanitizer and the coffee urn nobody ever cleans properly. Twelve folding chairs, a box of tissues on the windowsill that nobody has touched yet, and afternoo

TARIK Renata's action list is beside my coffee when I get in at seven-forty. My line is still near the bottom: Tarik: signatory, Dana. Next to it, in pen, is the word I wrote on Wednesday. Open. Friday's date sits under it. This is the day I said I'd have something. Dana's message comes at seven fifty-two. "The paralegal at outside counsel replied last night. She's agreed to speak with me. Nothing beyond that yet. The closing set has not been retrieved, and nothing I have establishes Mr. Reyes's authority to sign for Brightwater." I read it once. A day ago, "agreed to speak" would have felt like movement. It isn't. I write back. "Before you speak to her, find out what she can actually reach. The complete closing set, or only an index? Can she release copies? Does a partner have to approve it?" "Understood," Dana answers. "Those are the right first questions." I add them to the pad under Wednesday's lines and leave the margin alone. The word is still open. ⸻ Luis knocks at ten-

SOPHIAThe calendar fills two screens, and I've already given it colors.Blue for the sessions Teague has confirmed. Gray for the later weeks, which he still calls provisional. Below them, in orange, sit the two remote sessions Tarik's office proposed on Tuesday. They stay orange until Teague's own schedule says otherwise.I check the first against the master list. Tuesday the third, ten o'clock, remote, drawing team only. Nadia's structural engineer is in the office that morning, and the session needs nobody on site. It fits. The second takes longer. Thursday the fifth, two o'clock. I lay the drawing team's commitments over it, and a red block appears: the engineer is on another client's site until four. Then I go back to the top and check the confirmed blocks against the authority's own published schedule, line by line. Teague's cover note says the calendar is current as of Monday. It's Thursday. A lot can move in three days. It's a tidy list. Tarik labeled each session with what it

TARIKRenata's action list is on my desk when I get in at seven-forty, squared against the edge of the blotter. Marissa has left a coffee beside it, still too hot to drink.I find my line near the bottom. Tarik: signatory, Dana. My initials are next to it in blue ink, and under that, a date that hasn't moved since yesterday.Last night I told myself the matter was in motion. It isn't. I put my name on it and went home.I pick up my phone and write to Dana. What have you been able to establish about Daniel Reyes and the Calloway Street side letter? Only what you can confirm.I add *Thank you* and send it before I can fuss with the wording. Then I pull the Hudson Quay file toward me and reread my notes from yesterday while I wait. At the bottom of the terrace page, in my own handwriting: dependency: borings. I underlined it twice. Her reply comes at eight-twelve.Here's what I can confirm. The acquisition agreement fixes the Northgate closing date, and nothing in it conflicts with the t
