Chapter 5

Autor: Year on Year
The door shut behind Calvin, and the conference room went quiet again.

When the meeting was over, I packed up my laptop and returned to my desk. My phone showed 23 missed calls and 17 messages from Calvin.

The last one read, "I've already called your parents. You can explain everything to them yourself."

My fingers went cold as I stared at it.

I couldn't believe he had actually dragged my parents into this. Did he think I'd cave under their pressure? Or did he think getting them involved would somehow make me admit that I was wrong?

I opened my contacts. Just as my finger hovered over "Mom", her call came through.

"Jolene, your dad and I have been worried sick! Calvin said you had a—"

"Mom, listen to me first," I interrupted her.

"And what is this nonsense about getting a divorce?" my mom, Sophia Mendes, demanded. "What on earth is going on?"

I stepped into the break room and closed the door behind me. Then I put my phone on speaker.

"He's been making breakfast for a female coworker for three years. He woke up an hour early each morning to cook, cut up fruit, fry eggs, and pack it all up so nicely for her."

"What?" My mom's voice was laced with shock.

I continued, "He did it for three years—over a thousand days. Mom, I was grabbing cold sandwiches from the convenience store while she got a homemade breakfast every morning."

There was a long silence on the other end.

I said, "I asked for a divorce, but he refused. He even showed up at my office to make a scene."

"He went to your office?"

"Yeah, he barged in right in the middle of my meeting just now, and security had to drag him out. Then he called you and Dad to tell you I was cheating on him."

My mom's voice hardened. "Jolene, don't worry. Your dad and I will always be on your side."

We talked for a few more minutes before hanging up. I leaned against the break room wall and finished the last sip of water.

When Calvin and I got married, my dad had a bit to drink at the wedding. With red eyes, he told Calvin, "Jolene is my only daughter. You have to take good care of her."

Calvin said, "Don't worry, I will."

So much for his promise to take care of me.

After work, I drove back to the hotel.

I'd extended my stay for another three days, but that wasn't a long-term solution. Besides, I needed to go home to pack some clothes and grab my essential documents.

The garage lights were sound-activated. I kept quiet, so they stayed off. When I walked to my apartment, something caught my eye.

Calvin's car was parked a short distance away, its headlights on. There was someone else inside.

I moved a few steps to the side and hid behind a pillar.

A woman was sitting in the passenger seat. She was leaning over toward the driver's side, her hand resting on Calvin's shoulder.

He didn't pull away. Instead, he tilted his head toward her and smiled.

I pulled out my phone and quickly took several photos. Then I walked to the car and knocked on the passenger-side window.

The woman turned toward me and froze. Calvin turned too, and the color drained from his face.

The window slowly rolled down.

I smiled at her, then looked at him. "So this is your coworker with the sensitive stomach? What, did she need some help digesting after dinner?"

Calvin said nothing, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard.

The woman hurriedly unfastened her seat belt and tried to open the door.

I reached out and blocked the door. "What's the rush? I haven't sent the photos to our parents yet."

Ava froze."It's my husband's pension money," Lucy said. "It's not much, just 30 thousand dollars."Ava shook her head and shrank back. "I can't take it."Lucy's wrinkled hand remained outstretched, steady and firm."That's a Meyer baby you're carrying," she said. "Whether you keep it or not is up to you. But this money is yours, no matter what."Tears streamed down Ava's face again, her body shaking like a leaf. This time, she didn't refuse. She took the envelope with shaking hands.Lucy gently patted the back of her hand. "Take care."Ava stood in the middle of the room, looking pale and completely drained as she clutched the envelope. She turned and looked at Calvin. He was still slumped on the couch with his eyes closed."Calvin," Ava said softly. He didn't move."Calvin, look at me."He finally opened his eyes. They were empty, as if there was nothing behind them."Everything you told me was a lie, wasn't it?" asked Ava.He said nothing."You never planned to get a

Ava trembled in Martha's grip, crying even harder. When she finally spoke, her voice came out as a strained whisper. "He told me he would get a divorce."The room fell silent again.Martha slowly let go of Ava's hands and stumbled back onto the couch. Roger slammed his fist onto the coffee table. The teacups rattled, and tea splashed across the table.Lucy sat there in silence, her deeply lined face unreadable. Then she finally spoke. "Whatever happened between you two, that's your business. I can't change it, and I won't interfere."She paused and looked at Calvin. "But there's a baby involved now. Are you going to take responsibility or not?"Her voice was quiet, but everyone in the room heard her clearly.Calvin opened his mouth, then closed it again. A muffled sound caught in his throat.Lucy didn't wait for an answer. She turned to Ava instead. "Miss, who do you have back home?"Ava blinked, tears still clinging to her cheeks. She looked like a child who had been caught do

Ava stood behind me, trembling slightly. She opened her mouth several times, but no words came out."I'm asking you! What are you doing here?" Calvin demanded, his voice getting louder. Martha tugged at his sleeve. "Keep your voice down."He shook her off and stared at Ava in utter disbelief.Ava finally managed to speak, her voice soft and shaky. "I called you, but your phone was off. You didn't reply to my messages either. I went to the office, but they told me you'd quit. I didn't know where you went. I didn't even know where your hometown was. I couldn't find you.""So you went to her?" He gestured toward me with his chin. "Why did you go looking for her?""I… She... she came back for me," Ava stuttered. "She told me she'd found you, so I came with her.""You came with her?" His face hardened. "Why would you do that? What right do you even have to be here?" Roger finally spoke, his voice low and heavy. "That's enough."Calvin frowned. "Dad, you don't understand. This wom

My hands tightened around the steering wheel."When he first asked me out, he told me he was single," Ava said quietly. "On our first dinner date, he told me he'd dated a few people before, but none of those relationships had worked out. He said he lived alone and didn't really have anyone to hang out with on weekends."I said nothing. She continued, "About a month later, a coworker warned me that Calvin might be married. She said she'd seen him with his wife at a company event. So I confronted him, and that's when he finally admitted it."Her voice trembled. "He told me your marriage was dead. You two didn't love each other anymore and were only staying together because of your kid and the house. He asked me to give him time. He promised he'd marry me once he got everything sorted out."I frowned. Our child? Where had that come from? We'd been married for five years and didn't have any kids. It wasn't that we didn't want them. I just couldn't get pregnant. I went to the doctor f

"Please," Ava pleaded. "I really don't know where to find him." Her voice trembled, and she was visibly shaking.I looked down at her. She really did look awful. Her lips were dry and cracked, and dark circles ringed her eyes. She didn't look like she was putting on an act. She was genuinely scared, desperate, and completely lost. But there was nothing I could do for her."He ran off, and I'm looking for him too," I said. "So I can't help you find him. He walked away from his own home, as you can see.""But I'm pregnant…""That's not my problem." I left without looking back. The afternoon sun was almost blinding. I stood on the sidewalk for a moment, narrowing my eyes until they adjusted to the light. My phone suddenly buzzed. It was a message from Ms. Vance."Got the Social Security number. I'll start looking for him. See you at the office at 3:00 pm."I met with Ms. Vance at her office that afternoon. She was a woman in her 40s with short hair and glasses. She spoke in a cal

Ava Shaw. For three years, I had no idea what her name was. I didn't expect her to have the nerve to contact me. I stared at her message for a moment, my fingers hovering over the screen, wondering what she wanted to talk about. Was she going to apologize? Explain herself? Or beg for forgiveness? After a moment of hesitation, I replied, "Where?"She sent me the location of a cafe in a mall on the south side of town. I drove there and found her sitting at a table in the back, her against the wall. She looked nothing like the woman I'd imagined. There was nothing glamorous or seductive about her. She was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans with her hair pulled back in a simple ponytail and no makeup. Her lips were pale, and dark circles showed under her eyes. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were large and striking as she watched me walk over."What did you want to talk about?" I sat across from her and got straight to the point.Ava kept her head down, fidgeting with her hands
