Chapter 3

Penulis: Bonnie
By dawn, I had packed everything and made my way downstairs.

What I saw there made me stop.

Damian was sitting beside Lydia, feeding her broth with patient care.

Before I could say anything, he looked up, saw me, and stood at once.

He set the bowl down and explained with visible awkwardness, “Lydia hasn’t had much appetite this morning, so I made her some broth.”

I only nodded and reached for my suitcase.

That was when Damian finally noticed it. His brows drew together immediately.

“What are you doing?” he asked. “I only made Lydia some broth. Are you really going to make an issue out of that too?”

There was already anger in his voice.

He strode over and snatched the suitcase from my hand.

I looked at the red marks scattered along his neck and felt sick.

“Was it only broth?” I said coldly. “Why don’t you take a look at your neck first?”

For a moment, panic flashed across his face. He raised a hand to cover it.

“There were too many insects last night,” he said quickly. “That’s all.”

I gave a short laugh and said nothing.

My silence only seemed to embarrass him further. His expression darkened.

“Can you stop being jealous over everything?”

He threw my suitcase to the floor with more force than he meant to. Startled, I stepped back and instinctively covered my stomach.

Regret crossed his face at once.

He took two steps toward me, clearly about to soften and say something, but Lydia spoke first from behind him.

“This is my fault too, Damian. Let me apologize to Selene.”

She rose and carried the bowl toward me.

“Selene, don’t be upset anymore. You can have this broth.”

I looked at her smiling face, then at the rim of the bowl, still stained with her lipstick.

My disgust surged.

“Get away from me.”

As she kept reaching it toward me, I struck her hand aside.

The bowl shattered on the floor.

Lydia cried out at once.

“Damian, it hurts.”

She lifted her hand toward him, tears falling fast. There was only the faintest red mark there, barely visible, but Damian’s face tightened anyway.

He soothed her first, then turned back to me.

This time, he caught my wrist and pulled me into the kitchen.

I struggled, but his grip did not loosen.

When he finally stopped, he turned to face me, his breathing uneven.

“I told you before,” he said, voice low and tight, “you have to think about other wolves too. You were already upset, and Lydia was only trying to make peace. Why did you have to hurt her?”

At that moment, something about him felt terrifying.

Not because he had shouted, but because he looked at me as though I were the one doing wrong.

Tears slipped from my eyes before I could stop them.

The moment he saw that, his expression shifted. His voice softened again, and he reached toward me as if to touch my face.

I flinched away.

His hand froze.

Then he caught my wrist again, though less forcefully this time.

“You’re afraid of me?” he asked.

Something pained flickered across his face.

“Selene, I…” He stopped, his voice roughening. “I didn’t mean…”

Before he could finish, Lydia called out from the doorway.

Damian turned at once.

His grip loosened without thought.

I lost my balance and fell hard against the floor.

Pain tore through my lower belly in an instant.

Then warmth began to spread down my thighs.

Real fear hit me at last.

My whole body shook as I looked up at him.

“Damian,” I whispered, voice breaking, “the pup…”

He turned back, suddenly panicked.

Damian turned the moment Lydia called his name.

“Don’t use the pup to threaten me. You just scalded Lydia, and I haven’t even dealt with that yet. Right now, you and that pup together still matter less than she does.”

Then he picked Lydia up and rushed out.

I was left gasping on the floor, every breath raw with pain.

Somewhere through the blur, I remembered something an elder in the pack had once told me: if a mate truly turned away, a witch could sever the mate-bond.

But the cost was steep.

Once, I would never have chosen it. I had never imagined I would be driven to this point.

But now, staring at the door Damian had closed behind him without hesitation, I fumbled for my phone and called the witch.

When she answered, my voice was barely more than a whisper.

“Break the mate-bond between Damian and me.”

There was a pause on the other end.

“Are you sure?”

I shut my eyes as tears kept slipping down my face.

“Yes.”

“Selene, wait. I need to talk to you.”I turned my head once, but whatever Damian wanted to say no longer mattered. So I kept walking with the nurse.Behind me, my parents’ guards stopped him before he could come any closer. My father was shaking with rage.“You still dare show your face here? Haven’t you done enough to my daughter already?”My mother was worse. She stepped forward and slapped Damian hard across the face.“When I entrusted my daughter to you, what did you promise me? You said you would protect her and treat her well for the rest of her life. It hasn’t even been two years, and you’ve already taken another wolf into her place and driven my daughter to this.”Her voice broke with fury.“Get out. Don’t ever show yourself in front of Selene again.”Damian’s eyes were red. Tears ran openly down his face.“Please. I know I was wrong. I never knew Lydia had done so much behind my back.”“I failed Selene. I failed our child. But if she gives me another chance, I’ll make it righ

After returning to my parents’ home., I finally had a few days of peace. But it did not last. The illness soon swept through me with a cruelty I had never imagined. I had thought I already understood pain. I had not. When I looked at the tiny baby still wrapped in blankets, the urge to survive rose in me so fiercely that I could no longer stay silent.I told my mother the truth.“Mom… I have cancer.”For a moment, she froze. Then tears spilled from her eyes at once.“You foolish child. Why didn’t you tell us sooner? Why didn’t you come back sooner?”She lifted her hand as if she wanted to strike me, but in the end it only landed lightly on my shoulder, trembling.“What did you go through with Damian? How did my daughter end up like this?”Her voice broke.“If you were unhappy, why didn’t you come home? And you were sick on top of that, and still you said nothing. Did you mean to wait until you couldn’t hold on anymore? Did you mean to let your father and me lose you like that?”My ches

From my point of viewThe plane had barely landed overseas when I stepped out with my child in my arms. The moment I passed through the gate, I saw my parents waiting for me.“Dad. Mom.”I rushed toward them at once, almost throwing myself into my mother’s arms. She caught me quickly and stopped me with a look of exasperated worry.“You’re a mother now, and you’re still this reckless. Watch the pup.”My father said nothing. He only took the baby from my arms with great care.Only then did I finally bury myself against my mother.“Mom…”I could not say another word. The tears just kept falling. She understood anyway. I felt it in the way she tightened her arms around me.How could she not?Back when my parents left the country, they had wanted to take me with them. I had refused for Damian’s sake. In the end, I stayed behind, bonded with him, and convinced myself I had chosen love.A few years later, the proud daughter they had raised had returned to them worn thin, carrying a child and

Damian stared at the keeper as if he had stopped understanding the language.“What did you say?”The keeper repeated it patiently.“The records show that the mate-bond between you and Selene has been severed. You no longer have a registered bond with her, so we cannot release any information about where she went.”Damian shook his head at once.“That’s impossible. How could my bond with Selene be gone? You must have made a mistake. You must have the wrong wolves.”He refused to leave, insisting the registry was wrong. But the moment he had heard the words, something in him had already begun to panic. For reasons he could not explain, he suddenly feared the keeper might be telling the truth.Yet he had never agreed to anything. He had signed nothing. He had allowed nothing. How could the bond have been broken? When Damian kept pressing the matter, the keeper finally showed him the formal proof from the registry and even printed a copy for him to take away.Damian gripped the paper so ti

After taking Lydia to the healer’s wing, Damian found that Selene’s voice kept echoing in his mind. The way she had called his name would not leave him.A growing unease spread through him, and no matter how hard he tried, he could not push it down.He frowned, suddenly restless, and reached for his phone to call her.But before he could, Lydia gave a soft cry.“Damian, it hurts.”She leaned weakly into him at once, and he instinctively caught her in his arms.“Didn’t the healer already treat it?” he asked, worry returning to his face. “Why does it still hurt?”A tear slid down Lydia’s cheek as she looked up at him.“My stomach hurts too, Damian. What if something happens to the pup? I only wanted to make peace with Selene. I never thought she would react like that.”Anger flickered across his face.“I’ve spoiled her too much. That’s why she’s gotten worse lately.” He exhaled sharply. “I’ll call her right now and make this clear.”But the moment he said it, his expression changed. What

Then the house went still.Only me and the pup inside me were left.I could not even call for help properly. I could only lie there, crying, while the pain in my body and the ache in my chest dragged me under together. When I had needed Damian most, he had chosen Lydia without a second thought. And all for an injury that barely counted.I forced myself to hold on long enough to call emergency services. When I woke again, I was already in the hospital.Nurses were hurrying me toward the delivery room.“Hurry, get a doctor. She’s not doing well. She may deliver early.”“Where’s her phone? Call her family. Call her mate. We need a signature.”The ringing went on and on through the room, unanswered.A tear slipped quietly from the corner of my eye.Of course Damian would not answer. He was with Lydia. Why would he care whether I lived or died, whether our pup survived or not? After several tries, he finally rejected the call. One of the nurses looked at me with concern.“Is there anyone el
