I just know they’re all filled with future Alphas, Betas and enforcers. It's where the best of the best train, rumours have it, even the Alpha King runs one of them but I have no idea if that's true.
“Think he knows that she’s being sent to Irkwood?” One of the enforcers asks as the van rolls to a stop; I hear the creaking and squeaking of a window a second before cold air washes over my sweaty body.
“Please, do you really think the old-fashioned Alpha Dean would let his only daughter come and be trained here? I bet he assumed she would be sent to Ashford where the killers and rogues end up.” The tattooed one growls right back; I hear the sound of static and then a nasally male voice over a speaker.
“Reason for visit?” I take an instant dislike to the male without ever seeing him; something about his voice sets every hair on my body on end.
“We have the new student; she’s on the books.” The tattooed one sounds exhausted; I get the strangest feeling that he isn’t a fan of the nasal-voiced male either.
“Ah yes, her.” The voice hisses over the speaker. I listen to the sound of static and then the creaking of metal gates being opened before the van starts moving again.
"Are you awake yet?” The tattooed enforcer's gruff voice washes over me. I start to bite my tongue so I don’t answer him but I have a gut feeling that he wouldn’t ask the question if he didn’t already know the answer. I try to open my eyes again but it's like they’ve been glued shut. I feel them flutter but I can’t fully open them yet.
“Fuck you.” I snap at the enforcer; he lets out a gruff, barking laugh as the van turns around a sharp corner.
“Listen to me carefully.” The enforcer hisses. “Irkwood is where the best of the best are trained; you weren’t supposed to come here, someone pulled strings and now you're being placed with Alphas and Betas who have trained for years. They’re stronger than you but you have grit; keep your head down and focus on surviving.” I can’t believe this tattooed enforcer is actually giving me advice and good advice at that. Part of me wanted to come out of the van swinging and kicking just to let every male know that I’m not going to be some little pushover female they can kick around. I suppose keeping my head down could have its advantage. Cole used to say that there was a beauty in standing back and watching. He would tell me that when we stop and watch, that's when you see things others don’t want you to see.
“Why would someone do that for me?” I ask as I try once again to open my eyes; this time they open but my vision is so blurry that I can barely see the side of the panel van, let alone anything else.
“I have no idea; I just know the order came to me from my Alpha and now you’re here.” I look up and see the back of the tattooed Alpha’s head; I can just about make out the large wolf paw tattooed on the back of his neck.
“You drugged me.” My words slur slightly but my vision is clearing up just enough to see the artificial light shining through the windows of the van. I can’t smell anything but the enforcers but I know the second the doors open, I will smell every male that has trampled through this place and given that it's a War Academy, I’m about to be overwhelmed with scents.
“I had to; if you killed your father, I would have had to take you to Ashford and I'm not driving that far from my Pack in the middle of winter.” He makes it sound like it would be an inconvenience but I actually get the impression that he was trying to do me a favour by drugging me up with wolfsbane. He’s right about one thing though: if my wolf hadn’t been trampled down, it's highly possible I would have killed my father. My anger was up, my wolf was pissed and I was one good kick away from getting free and attacking my father.
“Here we go.” The other enforcer growls under his breath as the van jerks to a stop, I rock to the side and a small groan leaves my lips as both enforcers chuckle at my discomfort.
I blink my eyes over and over again as I listen to the doors of the van opening and closing. I rock from side to side again as their weight leaves the van; I can hear their booted feet crunching along the gravel as they walk on either side of the can.
“Is she secure? Her father said she’s feral.” I don’t recognise the voice but I’m not surprised to hear it's a male; I doubt I will be hearing another female for quite some time.
“She was pissed about being brought here against her will but she isn't feral.” The tattooed enforcer hisses; he’s defending me, which is a complete contradiction to how he treated me back at the Blackthorn Pack.
“Whatever, just get the bitch out here so you enforcers can go back to work.” I crinkle my nose as the nasal male voice barks out orders. I don’t need to smell him to know he’s a weak Beta; only someone who doesn’t have real power can speak to someone stronger like that. I might not be a fan of the tattooed enforcer but I could sense his strength the second I saw him; he doesn’t ask for control, he takes it.
“Are we pretending you give the orders around here, Frankie?” The tattooed enforcer laughs and I feel the van shake once more; this time it doesn’t rock back, which makes me think the enforcer has planted himself against the side of the vehicle and thanks to his impressive muscles, it can’t push back against him. I get the impression that the tattooed enforcer is buying me time; whether true or not, I don’t waste the precious minutes he’s giving me. I start pulling on my wrists and working on pulling my wolf forward; it's harder than it should be because of the wolfsbane still in my system, it's kind of like trying to grab my wolf while she’s wriggling in quick-drying cement.
‘Just the claw, come on, you can do it.’ I try to encourage my wolf while straining my body; I can feel my nonexistent abs trying to pulse from the strain, my body is definitely not designed to be rocking back and forth like a damn ship.
>I’m not sure where I’m running to; it's lunchtime, so the corridors are empty but even if they were full, I would still be running with this strange haze of red clouding my vision. I’m not angry at Lucian; he was just a convenient person for me to yell at after realising just how far my father has taken his control over me. I’ve been living in a fantasy world, thinking the world spins one way when it actually turns the other, no matter how hard I try to rationalise it, the only reason I can think of why my father did this was because he wanted power over me. That's all every male wants. They use their strength and pheromones to control females and think we should just kneel beside them and say, ‘thank you.' I might be untrained but I refuse to be weak. I’ll train until I’m stronger and then I’ll show every male exactly how weak females can be. “Morana!” Ethan’s yell breaks through the cloud of anger rolling over me. I stumble as I place my hand on a rough stone wall and pull
>“So he lied to me.” Mora looks down at the book but not before I see the tears welling in her eyes and the way her small button nose has turned red, something about my mate tells me she isn’t used to crying in front of others, if she cries at all. My throat goes tight as I clench my hands into fists at my side; every dominant part of me is screaming at me to comfort my mate but I doubt Mora will welcome my touch right now. She knows she’s my mate but for some reason she’s fighting the connection and keeping me at arm's length. I badly want to shake her and demand she accepts my mark but the Alpha side of her will just shut down the second I make that kind of demand. My best way in is being available for her to confide in and giving her the one thing no one else ever has. A safe place to be vulnerable. “Look at me, Mora.” I growl as I continue to clench my hands into fists; my dull fingernails dig into my calloused palms so hard I’m worried I’m going to draw blood. “Just l
>“Alright, piss off to lunch and meet me in the garden after; be ready for sparring.” I barely even hear Lucian bark the order to the class or the sounds of chairs scraping against the floor. I’m engrossed in the book he handed us all; none of it makes any sense to me, it's almost like I’ve been living in a bubble lost in time. The book clearly outlines all of the laws; some of them I know and some of them are completely new to me but apparently all of them were dictated by the Alpha King and are enforced by the Royal enforcers. It says each Pack should follow the laws and it even says when the Alpha King should be called in and when the Alpha can handle things on his own. “This makes no sense.” I whisper to myself as I read the part about Omegas being protected under something called the Morgan Law. I have no idea who or what Morgan is but apparently whatever happened has caused several laws to be issued to protect Omegas from cruel and unusual punishment; it's even a crime
>"Sorry, Beta," Jack mutters under his breath before grabbing my hand and dragging me past Lucian into the classroom. For just a second my breasts rub against Lucian’s chest and I swear he pulls in a deep breath and tightens his hands into fists but I’m in the classroom before I can fully take in the moment. ‘Godess, he smells so good.’ My wolf whispers as Jack pulls me past several enforcers already sitting at the tables; each head turns to look at me but I keep my eyes forward until Jack stops at a table with two seats and practically pushes me into one of them. “Welcome to Pack History.” Lucian isn’t shouting but his voice carries across the classroom and wraps around me anyway. I try to look away but I can't; it's like he’s holding me captive with those chocolate brown eyes, each time I try to look away it's like there’s a force connecting us together and forcing my eyes back to him. “Why aren’t we training?” One enforcer barks out; he’s already muscle-stacked, and I be
>By the time Alpha James calls for us to stop running, I feel like my lungs are in my stomach and my knees are made of sandpaper; every muscle in my body aches. Even when I stop, I still feel like I’m going to fall flat on my ass. I have no idea how long I’ve been running; I just know it's more than I’ve ever run before. “Go to the classroom, keep your trap shut and try to learn something.” Alpha James growls down at me while the rest of the class spars with the enforcers. “You too." He growls at Jack; we both just stare at him with slightly open mouths while our breath pants in and out. “Classroom? Don’t we get to spar?” Each word hurts but I manage to push them out before bending low and bracing myself on my knees. I’m covered in so much sweat that I look like I’ve just showered in my clothes and stepped out into the world without drying off. “Spar.” Alpha James snorts before making himself bend down so he can look me dead in the eye. “You are no Alpha. You never will be
>“Who is he and why is he talking to my mate?” I hiss at Hyde as I watch the training session from the sidelines. Alpha James is making them run for much longer than necessary, but it's not lawbreaking, so I force myself to stay on the sidelines and watch as my mate gasps and pants while talking to a very attractive blonde male. "That's the one that was sent for correction, you because he's, erm, well, you know.” Hyde’s ears turn red as he grips the back of his neck and looks down at the ground. “Gay.” I say firmly. “It's not a dirty word, Hyde; it's who he is and people need to accept that.” I don’t think Hyde is homophobic; I think he’s just not used to people like this male around him; he probably makes the big enforcer a little uncomfortable. Hyde doesn’t do well with the unknown.“Whatever.” Hyde grunts as his nose scrunches up and he forces himself to look up at Mora and her new companion with narrowed eyes. “He’s called Jackson but goes by Jack; he’s from a Pack in
