Chapter 2

Heliotrope
By evening, I arrived at the lakeside estate Luca had just bought.

It was an old Valenti property the family had recently taken back, built right against the water. Two rows of security guards in black stood outside the iron gates, and the family crest at the entrance had been polished until it gleamed.

The front lawn was covered with white roses and champagne-colored balloons. A gold floral arch stood at the entrance with the words “Welcome Home, Mother” written across it.

Beneath the arch, almost everyone had arrived: Valenti relatives, people from the family office, and several of Luca’s closest men who had followed him for years.

Their expressions shifted when I walked in. Some called me Donna, while others only glanced at me before lowering their voices and looking away.

I made my way through the crowd and saw a body covered with a white sheet in the corner of the lawn.

The moment I saw it, my body went rigid.

Vivian stepped forward then, her eyes red and her voice carefully wounded.

“Elena, I only wanted your mother to understand that not everyone can walk in and out of a Valenti estate as they please.”

“Who knew she was so fragile? Security had just taken her out when she suddenly had a heart attack.”

She paused, her voice softer.

“You won’t blame me, will you?”

So Luca’s mother was really dead because of her.

My heartbeat almost spun out of control, but before I could speak, Luca stepped forward and pulled Vivian into his arms.

“This isn’t your fault.”

His voice was gentle enough to sting.

“You were only protecting the rules of my estate. If anyone is to blame, it is her for being old enough to know better and still having no boundaries.”

“You have already been kind enough not to hold Elena responsible for the distress this caused you.”

Then Luca looked at me, his face turning cold.

“Elena, look at what your mother has done.”

“She died on my property, frightened Vivian, and ruined the family welcome dinner I prepared for my mother.”

Seeing him speak with such certainty felt absurd.

I pointed at the body under the sheet and said slowly, “Luca, I suggest you look for yourself and see who actually died.”

He frowned.

“Isn’t it your mother? What is there to look at?”

“I don’t want this kind of thing staining tonight.”

His sister Isabella spoke next, her face full of disgust.

“My brother set this estate aside from the family assets as a gift for our mother’s return to New York.”

“Our mother hasn’t even moved in yet, and your mother already came here to claim space.”

“If you ask me, she brought this on herself. At least now she won’t keep causing trouble for the Valenti family.”

She looked at me with open contempt.

“Elena, don’t think that just because you became Donna, your small-town relatives get to rise with you.”

She might never walk properly again. But Luca refused to accept it.A Don could be ruthless. He could scheme. He could order others to die.But he could not accept his mother becoming crippled because of him.He used every family connection he had and sent her into the most exclusive private medical system in Europe. The amount of money spent was beyond what most people would see in a lifetime. All for the chance that she might stand again.A few days ago, she had called him personally. She told him the recovery was nearly complete. She could walk no

The moment the voice on the phone finished speaking, Luca’s expression changed completely.“What did you say?”“My mother arrived this morning?”For the first time that night, his voice lost control. The man on the other end answered cautiously.“Yes, Don.”“Mrs. Valenti seemed to want to surprise you, so she didn’t inform anyone in advance.”“She went directly to your lakeside estate after landing.”“It should have been around noon.”He hesitated briefly before continuing.“You had already ordered the estate prepared for her arrival, so we assumed someone would be there to receive her.”The moment those words landed, Luca froze.“She arrived at the estate… at noon?”“Yes.”The voice continued carefully.“Surveillance shows Mrs. Valenti was wearing light-colored clothes and carrying a purple suitcase.”“The last place she appeared was near the estate entrance.”Silence swallowed the lawn.Slowly, Luca’s gaze shifted toward the corner of the grass.Toward the purple suitcase stained wit

I looked at Luca quietly. At the man I had once loved with my entire youth. Before he became Don, before so many people bowed their heads to him, he had been poor but determined. There had been light in his eyes. He held the files I prepared for him and spoke about the future we would build together.Back then, Luca had been the warmest light in my life.He loved me.And I loved him. That was why I supported him without holding anything back, stayed with him through his hardest years, and even let my mother give him half a lifetime of savings. But now, his love was gone.So what reason did I have to stay by his side and waste the rest of my life?Seeing me agree to the divorce so easily, Luca froze for a moment.Isabella reacted first and spoke eagerly.“You said that yourself. Don’t take it back.”Then she immediately ordered the family lawyer to draft a divorce agreement and handed it to me.“You want to divorce now?”“Then sign.”“Don’t use this to scare people.”She looked at me wi

After ending the call, Luca looked at me coldly.“Elena, when my mother arrives, I want to see what else you can say.”Vivian quickly stepped forward and comforted him in a soft voice.“Mr. Valenti, don’t worry. Mrs. Valenti must be fine.”Isabella nodded as well.“That’s right. Don’t listen to her trying to scare everyone.”“She is doing this on purpose.”Luca nodded slightly.“I know.”“I never believed anything could have happened to my mother.”“And I certainly don’t believe someone as kind as Vivian would ever hurt her.”Then he looked at me, his voice cold.“Elena, you have disappointed me.”“After this family welcome dinner is over, we are getting divorced.”“The Valenti family does not need a Donna who disrespects my mother.”The moment Luca mentioned divorce, Isabella was the first to agree.“You should divorce her.”“Elena was never good enough for you, and she was never worthy of being Donna.”“Vivian is the one who should be standing beside you.”“When Mother arrives, I’ll

My words froze Vivian instantly. The entire estate fell silent before the crowd erupted in shock.Luca finally exploded.“Elena, have you lost your mind?”“I just told you to behave yourself, and now you’re cursing my mother again?”Isabella glared at me.“You insane woman.”“Today is the day our mother comes home, and you keep saying these disgusting things?”Vivian looked at Luca with wounded eyes.“Mr. Valenti, I know Elena dislikes me.”“But she can’t frame me by cursing Mrs. Valenti in front of everyone.”“Does she hate Mrs. Valenti that much?”The guests completely lost control.“Has she gone insane? How dare she say something like that in front of the Don?”“She’s so jealous she’s forgotten all basic limits.”“This is Mrs. Valenti’s welcome dinner, and she’s publicly saying Mrs. Valenti is dead. She’s obviously trying to curse her.”“A woman like this beside the Don will eventually bring disaster to the Valenti family.”Even my mother gently held my hand, concern filling her eye

After hearing Luca’s insults, I suddenly no longer had the energy to argue.I only said calmly, “Then investigate it properly.”Luca paused. “What?”I looked at him.“You believe I arranged all of this because I’m jealous of Vivian.”“Now that someone died at the estate, why not let your people investigate everything?”“Check the surveillance, the entry records, everyone who was here.”“If this was truly my doing, then deal with me according to Valenti rules.”The atmosphere shifted instantly.Vivian’s face lost color at once. She immediately stepped in, her tone suddenly tense.“Elena, what are you trying to do?”“Are you trying to turn this into a scandal?”Her eyes reddened as she lowered her voice deliberately.“Tonight is Mrs. Valenti’s welcome dinner. The entire family is here.”“If you start searching the estate and pulling surveillance footage now, do you want everyone watching the Valenti family become a joke?”“If word gets out, what will people think of the Don?”Isabella qu
