On their wedding night, Leah’s new husband, Matteo, gave her two choices. “My family wanted me to marry an ally’s daughter. I chose you, so they took everything.” She took off the only valuable piece of jewelry she’d worn to the wedding and placed it in his hand. “Then we start over.” For five years, she pressed sheets at a laundry by day and washed dishes at a restaurant by night. Matteo was always away, “paying off the family’s debts.” Their son, Finn, waited by the phone for a goodnight that came too late. On Finn’s birthday, Leah was offered a last-minute job at an estate. She was going to say no. Then the coordinator named the price. “Two hours entertaining the birthday boy. Three thousand dollars. The performer we booked didn’t show. Your son can help with the clown act.” Exactly enough for Matteo’s monthly payment toward “buying his freedom.” Leah and Finn changed into costumes that didn’t fit. Security patted them down at the side entrance. A red foam nose covered Finn’s own. “Mom,” he whispered, “once we earn enough, can Dad come home and stay with me?” She straightened his hat and nodded. Outside the ballroom, the coordinator stopped them for one last warning. “This isn’t just a birthday party. Tonight, the Vitale family is officially recognizing its heir. Don’t upset the boy’s mother. Her family controls their most important port.” The doors opened. Leah walked in holding her son’s hand. “Daddy!” a boy called out. “Make that clown get on his knees. I want a pony ride!” The man whose arm he was pulling set down his glass and turned with a smile. Matteo. Her husband. The man who’d called that morning, begging her to hold on for one more month. Now he sat at the head of the table. In the Vitale boss’s seat.

Chapter 1

Matteo barely glanced at Leah and Finn before gesturing toward the performance area.

“Get on your knees. Let Nico have some fun.”

He hadn’t looked past the clown makeup. He hadn’t recognized the boy with the red nose hiding behind his mother.

His own son.

Leah couldn’t move.

Five years ago, Matteo had sat in this ballroom the same way. One touch of his glass against the table, and every conversation stopped.

He’d never lost any of it.

She caught the coordinator’s sleeve.

“I thought the Vitale family had thrown him out.”

The woman turned sharply.

“Who told you that? He took over when his father died. The Bellandis are here tonight. Watch what you say.”

Leah let go.

At the head table, Bianca adjusted Matteo’s cuff. Her silver gown caught the light.

The Bellandi daughter. Leah remembered her. She remembered how much Matteo had loved her, too.

“You really want Nico to inherit all this?” Bianca asked. “He isn’t your biological son.”

Matteo glanced at the boy leaning against her leg.

“I’ll teach him. There’ll be a place for him when he’s older.”

“And your own son?” She paused. “His birthday’s today, too, isn’t it?”

Matteo’s expression didn’t change.

“I promised you and Nico that once you came back, neither of you would suffer again. Don’t bring anyone else into tonight. I just want you happy.”

Anyone else.

Finn tightened his grip on Leah’s clothes.

He understood.

The child who whispered goodnight into a phone every evening was barely breathing now.

Music started. The coordinator shoved Leah forward.

“Get moving. We’re not paying three thousand dollars for you to watch.”

Leah bent her knees and helped Finn through their rehearsed routine, circling the room with him.

Nico laughed so hard he nearly doubled over. Then he grabbed a handful of bills and scattered them at their feet.

“Pick them up! Whoever gets the most can keep them!”

Finn stood still.

“Want to get paid or not?” the coordinator hissed.

Leah crouched first.

She collected the bills beside polished dress shoes while Bianca laughed overhead.

Matteo didn’t stop her.

He steadied Nico instead, afraid the laughing boy might fall from his chair.

For the first time in five years, Leah saw that Matteo could worry about a child getting hurt.

Just not Finn.

Her father had driven for the Vitale family. She’d grown up in the staff quarters behind the estate, watching Matteo and Bianca cross the gardens together after school.

The future family boss and the daughter of an ally who controlled the ports.

Everyone said they belonged together.

Leah had believed it, too. She’d never told Matteo how she felt.

Then Bianca rejected the arranged marriage, married someone else, and moved overseas.

Matteo followed her to the airport.

“I don’t want to spend my life following your family’s plans,” she told him.

He returned drunk, his collar open, his handsome face hollow.

Leah was cleaning up a shattered wineglass when he caught her wrist.

“You won’t leave me, will you?”

She looked at him and nodded.

Months later, they married at a small ceremony with barely anyone there.

She thought he’d finally chosen her.

That night, he said his family had taken his assets. Refusing their marriage arrangement had come with a price.

She gave him her jewelry and moved into a basement with him.

After that, everything she earned went toward a debt that never got smaller.

Pregnant with Finn, she stood at the laundry with feet too swollen for her shoes.

After his birth, she kept his basket by the restaurant’s back door and slipped outside between stacks of dishes to nurse him.

Whenever she couldn’t keep going, she told herself to try a little harder.

Once Matteo came home, they could finally be a family.

No one had been waiting for her.

After the act, Leah collected her pay and took Finn to the staff changing room.

She lifted off his hat.

The tears he’d held back all evening spilled over.

“Mom, Dad didn’t get kicked out.”

She crouched in front of him, unable to speak.

Finn wiped his face with his sleeve, smearing the paint.

“He has money. He isn’t too busy to come home. He just doesn’t want to, does he?”

She pulled him close.

This time, she didn’t make excuses.

“I’m sorry.” She kissed his hair. “I trusted the wrong person.”

“Can we stop paying his debts?”

“Yes.”

“And stop waiting for him?”

She closed her eyes.

“We’re done waiting.”

The next morning, she took her marriage certificate and years of transfer records to a legal aid office.

The attorney listened, then asked if she was certain she wanted a divorce.

Outside the door, Finn sat quietly with his little backpack.

“I’m certain.”

A few days later, the paperwork was ready.

That evening, Leah made Finn macaroni and bought a small cake for the birthday they’d missed.

He blew out the candle.

Then Matteo came home.
