CHAPTER 8 - “The First Warning”

·

POV: Adrian

·

I felt something sharp twist in my chest.

·

He wasn’t asking because he believed it.

·

He was asking because someone made him believe it.

·

“Don’t say that again,” I said.

·

“You don’t understand.”

·

“I understand more than you think.”

·

“Adrian”

·

“Stop pushing me away.”

·

His breath faltered.

·

Seraphina watched us quietly, her face mysterious.

·

Ethan took one slow step back. “You shouldn’t defend me in public. It puts you at risk.”

·

·

“And letting them insult you puts me at risk too,” I shot back. “Because I won’t stand there and pretend I don’t

·

care.”

·

The words slipped out too fast.

·

Too honestly.

·

Ethan froze.

·

Seraphina’s eyes opened sharply and she caught it quickly.

·

I felt heat rise in my face. “I didn’t mean”

·

“You did,” Seraphina said softly. “And now you can’t take it back.”

·

Ethan stared at me like he wasn’t breathing.

·

Like my words reached a place he kept heavily guarded.

·

The air tightened around us.

·

And then

·

Footsteps again.

·

A house guard approached us quickly. “Your Highness… there is something you must see immediately.”

·

Ethan stiffened. “What happened? ”

·

The guard paused, eyes flicking toward me uncomfortably. “It concerns… your safety.”

·

·

“My safety? ” I questioned.

·

The guard nodded and gave Ethan a folded piece of paper.

·

Ethan took it slowly.

·

Seraphina moved closer, anxiety building around her.

·

“What is it? ” she asked.

·

Ethan opened the paper with calm fingers, but I saw the tremble in his hand.

·

I watched his eyes scan the message.

·

His face changed instantly.

·

First confusion.

·

Then anger.

·

Then something darker.

·

He folded the paper again. Carefully. Too carefully.

·

“What does it say? ” I asked.

·

He didn’t answer.

·

Seraphina took a step forward. “Ethan. Show him.”

·

·

“No,” he said firmly.

·

“I’m not asking,” she said.

·

Then she reached for the paper, but Ethan stepped back quickly, hiding it behind him.

·

“It’s nothing,” he said.

·

“Ethan.” My voice was quiet but sharp.

·

He still didn’t talk.

·

So I stepped closer and looked him straight in the eyes.

·

“Tell me.”

·

He hesitated painfully long like he was deciding whether to lie.

·

Then he gave me the message.

·

One single sentence.

·

Written in thick, blunt ink.

·

“Leave the palace, or he loses the crown.”

·

My heart sank.

·

Seraphina inhaled quickly.

·

·

Ethan looked away.

·

But I couldn’t take my eyes off the words.

·

Leave the palace… or I lose everything.

·

My hands tightened around the paper.

·

“Ethan,” I said softly, “who sent this? ”

·

He shook his head. “There’s no signature.”

·

“But someone knows,” Seraphina whispered. “Someone powerful.”

·

Silence wrapped around us like a vice.

·

I stepped closer to Ethan again.

·

“Why didn’t you want me to read it? ” I asked.

·

His voice was low. “Because I knew what you would say.”

·

“And what do you think I’m going to say? ”

·

“That you won’t let me leave.”

·

“You’re right,” I said.

·

He finally looked at me.

·

·

“You’re not leaving,” I whispered. “Not for me. Not for anyone.”

·

He took a shaky breath. “Adrian… this threat is real.”

·

“I don’t care.”

·

“I do.”

·

I shook my head slowly. “I’m not letting fear decide what happens next.”

·

But Ethan didn’t look convinced.

·

Seraphina stepped closer, voice tight. “Whoever sent that message is watching both of you. And now they

·

know exactly how to break you.”

·

My blood ran cold.

·

The threat wasn’t just against the crown.

·

It was against us.

·

Ethan clenched his hands. “I should go”

·

“No,” I answered. “We face this together.”

·

Seraphina looked between us, reading everything we weren’t saying.

·

She whispered, “Adrian… you need to ask yourself something.”

·

“What? ”

·

·

Her voice was soft. Too soft.

·

“If the next warning comes with a name… will you choose the crown? ”

·

Or him.

·

The question hit me like a blade.

·

I opened my mouth

·

But the hallway lights flickered suddenly.

·

Once.

·

Twice.

·

Then it went completely dark.

·

Seraphina gasped.

·

Ethan grabbed my arm instantly.

·

Footsteps sounded from the darkness slowly, deliberately, approaching us.

·

A voice followed.

·

Low.

·

Unfamiliar.

·

·

Too close.

·

“You made the wrong choice, Your Highness.”

·

I couldn’t breathe when I saw him.

·

He stood in front of my door like he owned the air around us. His eyes held mine, sharp, searching, almost

·

desperate.

·

I froze.

·

My heart twisted.

·

My breath vanished.

·

He spoke first.

·

“You got the message.”

·

“I did,” I whispered. “And you knew I would.”

·

He took a slow step toward me. “Why didn’t you tell me immediately? ”

·

“Because I wanted to understand why someone thinks I’m a threat to you.”

·

He flinched. “Ethan, don’t twist this. You know what this means.”

·

I let out a shaky breath. “It means someone sees us. Someone sees something they shouldn’t.”

·

His jaw tightened. “There is nothing to see.”

·

“There is,” I said softly. “More than you admit.”

·

·

His eyes flashed with something that scared , desire, anger. All mixed like a storm.

·

He tried to look away, but I stepped closer.
