JULIA

I shut the door behind me, walking away from the room that made it hard to breathe. As soon as I was out of the vicinity, my legs wobbled, and I felt tears prickling my eyes again.

I only acted tough inside, but in reality, I didn’t know what to do. I knew his words held some truth, and that was what I hated the most.

I walked until I reached the lobby. I looked around and quickly saw the two of them.

Evan was sitting in one of the chairs, holding Andy in his arms. The boy was fast asleep, his small face resting peacefully against Evan’s chest. Evan looked down at him with such tenderness that, for a moment, I felt my breath hitch.

It should have been a beautiful picture.

It was a beautiful picture.

But my chest tightened painfully when, suddenly, an image of Heather emerged right beside Evan. I felt like I was stabbed in the chest.

She was dabbing Andy’s forehead with a damp cloth. She moved so gently, and she looked utterly maternal. They looked like the perfect family.

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 2: CALLIE

CALLIE“Is this all?” my mom asked, her voice already tight. I glanced at the single, overstuffed suitcase by the door and the worn duffel bag that I’d patched not once but twice with floral fabric. “Yeah, Mom. That’s it.”She sighed, biting her lip as her anxious eyes darted over my bags once more. “I should’ve brought you more clothes. You only have two jackets—”“I’ll be fine,” I interrupted quickly, forcing a smile. “I don’t need a lot.”Despite my reassurance, she still looked like she might burst into tears, so I decided to change the subject by pretending to check my bag for what felt like the fifteenth time. Zipper's still working. My sketchpad was in the front pocket, right underneath my phone charger. I was ready. Well—almost.Just then, there was a loud thud, a scuffle, and suddenly, two tiny tornados launched themselves into the room.“Callie!”Millie and Emil—short for Emily and Emilio, but they hated those names—rushed forward with matching grins that lit up their face

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 1: ANDY

ANDYThe house was filled with noisy chaos, something I had grown accustomed to after having a sister. However, this time, it felt distinctly different. Sniffling noises, occasional gasps, and—goodness, help me—my dad’s crying filled the space. “My baby,” he wailed, his voice breaking. That exact phrase. The same one he had been repeating all week. He was standing in the middle of the kitchen, his eyes red, arms loose at his sides, a picture of desolation.I pursed my lips. “Dad. Please.”“I just— You were— You were just crawling last week!” he exclaimed, tears glistening in his eyes.“I’m nineteen,” I muttered, trying to ground him in reality.“And now you’re leaving me!” “I’m not dying,” I responded, attempting to lighten the mood.To his credit, he still appeared put-together. Evander Astor had always taken pride in his appearance. His posture remained solid, his jawline still sharp, and his hair, while beginning to show the faintest hint of silver, was still thick. But lately, m

ISLA“I swear, if you’re not dating him by next month, I’ll eat a spoonful of wasabi,” May said, pointing her chopsticks at me like they were weapons.“I second that,” Krista added with a wide smile. “Isla and Theo. It’s giving childhood-friends-to-lovers energy.”“We’re not lovers!” I sputtered, choking on my boba tea.Krista snorted. “Okay, but weren’t you married back then? Theo said you were.”“That was when we were five!” I groaned, burying my face in my hands. “He made a ring out of some wildflowers and declared it in our backyard. That doesn’t count!”“Oh, but you never took it back,” May teased.I peeked at them through my fingers. “I had no choice, okay? Our parents are friends. We grew up together. We were just always... there.”“Mmhmm,” Krista said, completely unconvinced. “And now you’re still always there.”“Really romantic of him to share his fries with only you yesterday,” May added, twirling her drink.“It was one fry,” I muttered. Both of them cackled while I wallowed

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Special Chapter 10: Just Married

The mansion was unusually warm that afternoon—not from the sunlight pouring through the tall windows, but from the sheer number of baby toys scattered across the marble floors and the smell of fresh food wafting from the kitchen. For once, the dads had done it all. The long dining table was perfectly set, the centerpieces arranged, drinks poured, and dishes hot. The wives were banned from lifting a single finger.“You’re the queens today,” Evan had declared earlier, with a dramatic bow. “No objections.”Sarah and Julia didn’t argue, of course. But they feared for the quality of the food they were going to eat.Outside, Isla and Theo were waddling around the backyard, giggling as they chased bubbles floating through the air. Sarah was lounging on the sun chair, sunglasses on and juice in hand, while Julia trailed behind the kids with a camera. The squeals of joy filled the air like music.Inside, the kitchen was a scene of chaos. Evan wiped his hands on a towel and gave the roasted chi

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Special Chapter 9: Double Trouble

EVANThey always say pregnancy is a beautiful journey. I agreed to it—to some extent. However, it was also chaos. Pure, raging, hormonal chaos.Sarah and Julia were pregnant at the same time. That alone sounded absurd. We were happy, of course, but then, the disasters came.“I think I’m craving sour mangoes dipped in soy sauce and also maybe bubblegum,” Julia said one night as she lay on the couch, glaring at the ceiling. The worst part was that Rui got dragged into it too. Sarah had even worse cravings. So there we were—me and Rui—sitting in the car at 1:43 a.m., waiting for a drive-thru employee to hand us two of the weirdest snack combos anyone’s ever imagined.Rui let out a low laugh, completely delirious. “We’ve been out every night this week. I’m starting to think we’re the ones nesting.”I passed him his bag of pickle-flavored chips and peanut M&Ms. “You think?”He sighed, looking out the window. “It was supposed to be a happy time.”I nodded. “And instead, it’s a war zone.”We
