‎Adrian's POV

‎

‎I pulled my phone from the center console, stepped out into the night air, and dialed my father’s number. He answered on the second ring.

‎

‎"Hey, Dad."

‎

‎"Hello, young man," my father’s deep, gravelly voice rasped through the speaker.

‎

‎"About the person who broke into my place," I cut straight to the point, pacing near the side of my Range Rover. "What do we have on it so far?"

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 50: Nothing Serious

‎Blake's POV‎‎"Nothing serious," Adrian said.‎‎He said it the way he said everything he had decided was true, level and final, and then he bent to unlace his skates as if the conversation had ended. I stood at the boards with my stick in my hand and watched him do it.‎‎It was a good lie. I'd known him long enough to know that. The problem was that I had also just watched him skate backward across an empty rink with both of her hands in his, laughing, with his head tipped back and nothing held in reserve, and no one who feels nothing serious laughs like that.‎‎I hadn't seen that laugh since we were twelve.‎‎"You were laughing," I said.‎‎" People laugh."‎‎"You don't."‎‎He didn't answer. I stepped onto the ice and walked over to the bench, because I couldn't keep standing there like a man waiting outside a door.‎‎I had seen her skates as she left. White boots, dark blades, laces still bright. Not rentals. Nobody laces a pair of rentals that carefully, and nobody buys a

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 49: A Proper Invitation

‎Adrian's POV‎‎I had known her birthday since the night I took her to the ER.‎‎She had been sitting on the plastic chair with her hand held against her chest, too proud to show she was in pain, and the woman at the desk had asked for her date of birth. Scarlett had said it without thinking. I hadn't been listening, or I had told myself I wasn't, and weeks later it was still there in my head, filed with the other things I never forgot.‎‎When the day came, I almost texted her.‎‎I had told her five days. I had told her I'd write when it was over, and I held to it, because the road was still behind me and the lane was still dark and I couldn't be certain who was watching. I spent her birthday in my room with the box on the desk and my phone face down on the bed. It was the first birthday I had ever kept track of that wasn't my own, Blake's or my mother's.‎‎I had spent more time choosing the gift than I had spent on my thesis chapters.‎‎The easy options were the ones I'd alread

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 48: Five Days

‎Scarlett's POV‎‎My birthday came and went in the middle of the five days, and he didn't send a word.‎‎I told myself I hadn't expected him to. He had said "not this week", and he had said "I'll text you when it's over", and Adrian was a man who meant what he said. I hadn't told him the date anyway. There was no reason he should know.‎‎My mum had called in the morning and sang me a birthday song just like she would if I was home with her.‎‎Mia had pulled a squashed cupcake out of her desk drawer that night and stuck a candle in it, and sang off-key until I laughed.‎‎ Evan called, and I let him talk about nothing for ten minutes with the burner heavy under my mattress. He asked what I had done for my birthday cause he knows I usually just let it pass since our dad past. I told him I had beef tacos for lunch just like we used to on our birthday and that was true. I could hear his relief, he told me he kept the present he got me in my room and I was going to see it whenever I ca

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 47: Not this week

‎Adrian's POV‎‎I had typed it three times.‎‎'Come over.'‎‎The same two words I had sent her once before, the day of the range. They had been easy then. Now I sat on the edge of the bed with my shirt off and an ice pack pressed to my ribs, looking at them on the screen, and deleted them for the third time.‎‎The house was very quiet. I had always liked that about it.‎‎I had made it through Professor Arthur's office without anyone noticing. I sat in the chair, nodded at the right places and answered what I was asked, and I could not have told you one thing he said. All I remembered was the stiffness in my neck every time I turned to look at him, and a pair of eyes on the quad that had gone over every bruise I thought I had hidden.‎‎"Did you see a doctor?"‎‎I had said no. I had told her I could manage. It was the truth, if you ignored everything under it. I couldn't go to a doctor. A doctor would ask questions, and a doctor's record would sit somewhere that other people coul

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 46: A Door Held Open

‎Scarlett's POV‎‎I couldn't stop seeing his knuckles.‎‎I got through two lectures without hearing a word of either. Every time the professor turned to the board, I was back on the quad with Adrian's hand sliding into his pocket, and I let him walk away because he hadn't said no and he hadn't said yes.‎‎By evening I was sitting on my bed with my knees pulled up and my phone in my hand. Mia was out. The room was quiet enough that I could hear the radiator ticking.‎‎'He's an adult,' I told myself. 'He can look after himself.'‎‎I typed a message anyway.‎‎"Did you see a doctor?"‎‎I deleted it and typed it again, shorter, and sent it before I could argue myself out of it. Then I put the phone face down on the blanket and stared at the wall.‎‎It buzzed in under a minute.‎‎"No."‎‎I picked it up.‎‎"Adrian."‎‎"I can manage on my own."‎‎I read it twice. It was

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 45: Straight Spine

‎Scarlett's POV‎‎I had read the same paragraph four times and could not have told you what it said.‎‎I hadn't slept properly. After the café I had gone back to my room and lain awake thinking about how little I had found. So when I looked up from the book, it wasn't because I heard anything. It was because something in the quad had gone wrong, the way a room feels wrong when someone has moved one object.‎‎It was him, walking across the grass.‎‎He was doing it very well. Shoulders squared, jacket zipped to his chin, head high. Anyone else would have seen the captain of the hockey team on his way to class. But I know better and had learnt to watch how people move, and Adrian was moving like a man carrying something very full, trying not to spill it.‎‎He was favouring one leg. His right hand was pressed flat against his ribs, as if he didn't know it was there. And when he turned his head to avoid the sun, the whole neck turned with
