Karl’s POV

My brother never knocks.

He storms in.

The doors to my study opened with far more force than necessary, and I did not look up from the parchment in my hand.

“You are losing your mind.”

Ah. So that was the mood today.

“You will need to be more specific,” I replied calmly. “Losing one’s mind is an inevitable side effect of ruling bunch of mules.”

Ace paced before my desk, agitation rolling off him like heat.

“Lord Aldridge witnessed it,” he snapped. “He smelled it. He practic

Karl’s POV My brother never knocks. He storms in. The doors to my study opened with far more force than necessary, and I did not look up from the parchment in my hand. “You are losing your mind.” Ah. So that was the mood today. “You will need to be more specific,” I replied calmly. “Losing one’s mind is an inevitable side effect of ruling bunch of mules.” Ace paced before my desk, agitation rolling off him like heat. “Lord Aldridge witnessed it,” he snapped. “He smelled it. He practically tasted it in the air. Do you know what it means for that man to sense weakness from you?” My jaw tightened slightly. Anything about that man spoiled my mood. “What weakness?” “You have assigned palace guards to trail a human maid,” he continued. “You have issued direct orders that she is not to be harmed under any circumstances. What happens when the entire palace starts whispering about it?. And Aldridge—” He stopped pacing and leaned both palms on my desk. “Aldridge has never wanted

Cassia’s POV Days passed after the king’s promise of “protection,” and I cannot lie, I have seen many differences in my day to day life. Every time I am in the middle of my chores, a guard interrupts with either, “The king calls for your immediate attendance,” or, “By the King’s order, leave whatever you are doing and close for the day.” And the pure look of anger and horror on Cindy’s face? Always delightful. The most mind blowing change, however, was the grim reapers and their bitter concoctions. Out of the many times Karl and I have been intimate, I have never woken to them forcing a potion down my throat. The first time they stopped, I woke to find a bowl of the familiar contraceptive mixture resting quietly on the table. For a good few hours, I was confused. ‘Is this the drink?‘ ‘Where are they?‘ ‘Was this truly meant for me?‘ ‘Are they waiting for me to wake?‘ ‘Where are they?!‘ It took courage to ask the soldiers guarding the king’s chamber doors — I was blush

Cassia’s POV When I woke again, the world outside my window glowed copper-red. My skin burned with heat; my back throbbed as though each lash still lived beneath it. Diane had slipped out hours ago, leaving the faint scent of herbs in the air. I pushed myself upright, every movement slow, deliberate. The room felt too small, too heavy with memory. By the time I reached the corridor, the sun was sliding down the horizon. I told myself a short walk would do no harm. The path to the lake was nearly empty. Only a handful of guards lingered at a distance, their armor dull in the fading light. The water shimmered like melted glass, ripples catching the last glints of gold. I stood where he and I once had, reminiscing on our past conversation. A cool wind rose off the lake, slipping through the thin fabric on my arms and raising a shiver I hadn’t noticed before. I turned to head back, the cold finally sinking in. That was when I heard it— a low, rolling growl that seemed to crawl out

Cassia’s POV The corridors blurred as they dragged me through them. My footwear got lost at some point and bare feet slipped once against the cold floor, but the guards didn’t stop with their unyielding grip. The infamous punishment area was as cold and gruesome as I’d always imagined it, the air thick with a gag-inducing stench. My heart threatened to leap out of my mouth as the guards handed me over to the ones stationed there after telling my crime, their faces unreadable. “Tie her to it,” one of them ordered, motioning toward a wooden post near the wall. Old rope hung from it, stiff and stained with dried blood. No one had bothered to wash it. My chest tightened. “No, no—please, listen,” I began, my voice cracking despite myself. “I never meant for it to break. It was an accident a-and I can explain—.” The taller guard avoided my eyes, tying me up regardless. “Shut up and stop struggling.” The rough rope scraped against my wrists, biting into my skin as it tightened. I s

Cassia’s POV It still amazes me how I found myself straddling the King upon his bed, his arms loosely wrapped around my waist as he rested against the headboard, in the deep middle of the night. His lips trailed along the side of my neck, each kiss slow and deliberate, while my fingers moved through his hair in a soft rhythm.Moments ago, I had been preparing to retire for the night with my friends when a guard appeared, summoning me to his chambers. There, I found a warm, scented bath waiting and afterward, a steaming cup of herbal tea he claimed would ease any soreness I might still feel. I had insisted I was fine, yet he made me drink it anyway. The tea left me relaxed and oddly emboldened, enough to try coaxing him into bed. But damn him and his unshakable self-control.“But Karl,” I murmured, gazing down at him, “I’m telling you, I feel no pain. And besides—” I couldn’t help but blush after seeing the print of his arousal, “you look more than ready. Why stop yourself?”He pulled

Cassia’s POV He looked at me again and asked that same irritating question.“You’re really not his recent hole?”“Last night’s recent, actually. But is that a problem?” I replied, my tone dripping with false sweetness. He looked as if I had just struck him. Without waiting for his reaction, I turned away to help arrange the seats.“Your boldness, Cassia,” Stellar said with a hint of laughter as we flipped the heavy chairs and wiped them down.“Or her stupidity,” Groth muttered.“Save it, Groth. What do you know about boldness?” She countered himI chuckled at their usual banter while tracing my fingers along the elegant carving on a white wooden chair. Then something shifted. I could feel him coming — even before Drakon spoke.“He’s approaching. Wipe the last one quickly.”I glanced up, already staring before I realized it. He nodded at whatever Reckon was saying, but his gaze was fixed on me. He walked surrounded by a few soldiers, each one instinctively taking position to secure th

Cassia’s POV Ever since I was little, I’ve hated being the center of attention. Now, it felt like I’d been thrown into the spotlight, tied to a chair and forced to accept the crowds scrutiny. As I cleaned the king’s room, I swallowed the knots in my throat to avoid crying. From the blood spots o

Cassia’s POV “It doesn’t heal later?” He asked, genuinely unaware. Lazily stroking my back in a up and down motion.“You can’t just break a human’s bone and expect it to heal immediately.”I told him.He had to be joking. We were cuddling, naked under the sheets, and I wasn’t sure how we got to thi

Cassia’s POV His teal orbs darkened, fierce and hungry, as he resumed the kiss with a renewed fire. I tried to match his pace, feeling his arms roam around my body, searching for the zipper of my dress. Without breaking the kiss, he ripped it apart, along with my brassiere, and latched his warm

Karl’s POV “Make sure to give him a few drops of blood in a few hours,” I directed Reckon, instructing him to keep the prisoner I just wound up a little alive. “We’ll continue this session tomorrow.” I needed to get back to Cassia. On my way to my quarters, Reckon interrupted, calling my attent
