Chapter 3

Auteur: Sea Grail
Ten years ago, Royce left Grayport under a false identity to prove himself up north. At a cocktail party, he noticed me, a complete stranger, drinking a glass of wine that had been spiked.

He meant to rescue me, but instead walked in on me smashing the bottle over the creep's head. I'd dug the broken glass into my own thigh to keep myself conscious, and by the time it was over, my leg was a bloody mess.

Royce told me he'd never met a woman as fierce as me, and that was why he pursued me. We hadn't been together long before he brought me back to Grayport, and that was the first time I realized the kind of old-money empires people saw on TV actually existed.

Cutting ties with my parents was the Draytons' first condition for letting me into the family. They could barely stomach a daughter-in-law who wasn't up to their standards, and they certainly weren't going to tolerate my relatives showing up looking for handouts.

Humiliating me was the least of what they did.

That was the first time I formally asked for a divorce. My parents were ordinary people, but they loved me.

I chose to leave quietly by ferry. When Royce found out, he raced to the dock and threw himself into the freezing water without a second thought, swimming desperately after a ferry he had no chance of catching.

As a child, his family's enemies had kidnapped him and taken him out to the open sea, and he'd been terrified of the water ever since. But he fought through that fear for me.

Maybe even fate took pity on us, because the ferry broke down right where it was. I stood on the deck crying, and he was in the water crying.

That single leap was all it took. I was willing to bet my whole life on him.

The doctor came out to say that Blythe was awake, and Royce left without looking back. "Go home and cool off."

How could he be this cold to me?

I picked myself up off the floor, burning with enough jealousy and hatred to storm that room and tear it apart. But every ounce of that fury shattered the moment I heard their voices through the door.

"You bit me too hard!" Blythe's voice was bratty and spoiled.

"Your mouth tastes like cigarettes. Didn't you promise me you'd quit?"

Royce pulled her close, still shaking with relief that she was safe. "You scared me. I couldn't help myself, so I had one.

"Just this once. One last time."

Royce was actually quitting smoking for Blythe. I stood frozen.

A tabloid reporter once asked Royce to name the three things he couldn't live without. His answer was, "Celia, the Draytons, and cigarettes."

Even I had never been able to get him to quit. Even when we were trying to conceive, all he'd done was cut back to half.

The pain in my chest was so sharp I could barely stand, and my hands were too numb to push the door open and face them. Did Royce's heart really still belong to me?

I chose to run away instead.

Three days later, Royce sent me a new horse. I brought it to a villa under my name, one he'd given me as a consolation gift after I burned our house down when he brought another woman into our bed.

The painting in the living room was from the last time I caught him with a secretary, the wall of Hermès bags was from the first time I caught him cheating, and the couture jewelry in the safe was from after he got a woman pregnant and I cleaned up his mess.

Royce was right about me. I never knew when to quit. But even the most stubborn person would get tired of running into the same wall.

I came here to dig out the wager I'd signed in secret on our wedding day, so I could take it to Royce's mother and hold up my end of the deal.

But when I reached the estate and stood in front of the stone steps where Royce and I had once begged his family for their blessing, it all came flooding back. He'd refused to eat or drink, starving himself to prove he was willing to die before he'd give me up.

Even now, I have to admit that I still love him. Leaving Royce would be like tearing myself apart.

In just those few seconds of hesitation, I was already talking myself out of it again. No man can resist temptation, especially not one who owns the entire city of Grayport.

He was just playing around, and his heart was still mine. I was still his real wife.

I just never expected to find Blythe at the Drayton family estate.

When I landed up north, the air had a bite to it. I hadn't seen a cold autumn like this in years. I pulled my coat tighter and realized I had no idea where to go. I didn't have the nerve to go home, but I couldn't think of anywhere else in a city this big that would take me."Celia."Someone was calling my name. I thought my ears were playing tricks on me and shook my head, walking on."Celia Shaw!"I spun around, and when I saw who it was, the tears came flooding out."Mom! Dad!"All those years I'd been forced to cut ties with my family, it turned out Sylvia had been looking after my parents on my behalf, using my name. They didn't ask me if I'd been doing well. They just asked, "Are you hungry?"I nodded, and they smiled."What do you want to eat?"I rattled off a whole list of local comfort food I couldn't get in Grayport, and they laughed and told me they'd already prepared everything. I couldn't stop crying."I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."I'd been so stubborn and so selfis

To make sure I could leave smoothly, I decided to play them against each other. The tricky part was figuring out how to get to Blythe. My chance came when Royce got a phone call from her, nagging him to come home."So what if she's pregnant!" I swallowed my disgust and kissed Royce hard."I can give you a baby too!"For two full days, Royce stayed by my side without contacting Blythe, and the person I'd been waiting to see came straight to my door.I never believed that any woman willing to be the other woman could be as innocent as Royce imagined, especially after I went back and thought carefully about how Luna died. The timing had been too perfect.I might not know Blythe, but I knew a horse I'd raised for years with my own hands. I'd had Luna's body examined, and sure enough, there was a chemical residue in her lungs, a substance used to send mares into heat. And the only person who'd been close enough to Luna that day was Blythe."Please. Do you have any proof it was me?" Bl

What I didn't know then was that Blythe was panicking. She'd assumed that once I was out of the picture, her path to the top would be clear, but she'd underestimated just how much I meant to Royce. Given his track record of serial cheating, she'd figured the bond between us had to be thin by now. She never expected that Royce wasn't just a playboy, but a devoted one.Luckily, she'd come prepared. Everything had been calculated from the start. She'd staged the director catching her in a compromising position right when Royce happened to walk in, stayed unfazed even after he threw 200 million dollars at her and kept grinding away at bit parts without complaint, and even planted the broke boyfriend. All of it was an act. She'd done her homework on Royce and me long before any of it began. Using his wandering heart and his love for me as a blueprint, she'd deliberately modeled herself after a younger version of me to catch his attention.Because what was more dangerous than the woman

Royce pressed his lips together and took a long time before he finally spoke."I'll admit it. I've fallen for Blythe. But that doesn't mean I've stopped loving you.""And then what?" I cut straight through to the ugly truth he was hiding behind his words."You know I love you more than you love me, and that's exactly why you think you can get away with it. That's why you think I'll never leave, and why you keep hurting me over and over again. Am I wrong?"Royce froze, and the color slowly drained from his face. Because he'd known all along. He locked me up again. Sitting beside me, he ran his hand along my face and murmured, almost to himself, "I'm just afraid you'll regret it."I refused to say another word to him. Royce couldn't accept the change in me, and he left looking more shaken than I'd ever seen him.For the first time, he didn't go straight to Blythe. Instead, he drove back to the Drayton family estate. He stood in front of the registry, staring at Blythe's name, and

Entering a name into the Drayton family registry was a formal affair, complete with a public announcement and a ceremony. Royce asked for my opinion, and since I'd already decided to let go, I told him I had none. He was free to marry whoever he wanted. My answer was exactly what he'd been hoping for, but strangely, he didn't look pleased. "How come you're not even a little bit angry?"So, I turned the question back on him. "If I did object right now, would you call it off for me?"He didn't answer, but oddly enough, my words had a bite to them that seemed to improve his mood.I didn't understand. He was the one who lost focus in our marriage first, yet he couldn't stand the thought of me doing the same, of me pulling away from this twisted thing between us.That was when it finally hit me just how selfish Royce's love really was. He loved me, but he couldn't be faithful. And if I loved him, I was only allowed to love him.It struck me then that I should have left the very first

"Word travels fast." Royce didn't seem surprised to see me."If you're here to object, I'll save you the trouble. You don't get a say in Drayton family matters."He stepped in front of Blythe, shielding her with his whole body.Object to what, exactly? I had no idea what he was talking about, but a wave of unease washed over me.Royce's mother, Sylvia Harwood, called me into the family chapel alone and pointed to a page in the family registry. I saw a single line of text."Royce Drayton's wife—Blythe Renner."It was like having ice water dumped over my head. My entire body went cold, and I read the line again and again, unable to believe it."Royce says that since he can't legally marry Ms. Renner, he wants to give her a legitimate place in the family by adding her name to the registry." Sylvia's tone was flat, as though she'd long grown used to scenes like this."You know as well as I do that since his father passed, the Draytons are his. No one can stop him."Ten years ago,
