Chapter 6

Author: Eleven
The hall fell silent in an instant.

Only the sound of rain remained, pounding outside like a thousand drums, striking against every heart in the room.

Harriet's hand paused mid-cut. The knife scraped across the plate with a sharp, grating sound.

She froze for two seconds, then let out a short laugh.

"Blood? The props team really went all out on this one." She turned to the director, her gaze sharp and probing. "Daniel, did you add this part? Nice pacing. Good twist."

The director blinked, c

She started drinking and talking to empty air, and little by little, she began to lose control of herself. Then one day. Harriet came back to the same cliff where it was all filmed, holding my urn in her arms. She looked like someone who was had been living on the streets for too long. Her hair was tangled, her clothes wrinkled and dirty, and she smelled like alcohol. There was nothing left of the sharp, composed woman who once stood beside a helicopter. She set the urn down on the rock where I fell and quietly laid out food across the ground, one plate after another, simple home cooking: light vegetables, mashed potatoes, and a serving of chicken that already went cold. She ran all over the city to buy them, one by one."Elliot, eat something." She sat down right there on the ground and started grabbing food with her hands, stuffing it into her mouth.I stood there, watching her.She ate fast and hard, as if she were trying to make up for everything at once. Soup dripped into

Harriet's fingers stilled on that line, and at last, tears began to fall, though whether they were real or just another performance for the police standing nearby, no one could tell. She kept flipping through the pages until she reached the very last one, written just that morning. The handwriting was messy, as if it was rushed down in a hurry.[They're catching up. Mom hurt her leg and can't run fast. If we really can't escape, I'll lead them away. I put all the money I have in this hidden pocket. It's only a few thousand, but I hope it can help Mom buy some food.][P.S. Mom, if I make it back alive this time, can you please stop buying me tomahawk steak? You always get that for me, but I'm actually allergic to red meat. Every time I eat it, I break out in rashes. I didn't have the heart to tell you because you always look so happy when you buy it. However, if I die saving you this time, I guess I won't need allergy medicine anymore, right?][Also, remember to get insurance. I sec

Harriet froze.Of course. It was her idea. She said, "If he knows, it won't feel real. I want him to believe I'm actually going to die. That kind of desperation, that kind of sacrifice."For the sake of that so-called realism, she took away my right to know and my chance to live.If I knew it was all a performance, I would have run to the left and jumped onto the airbags. However, I thought the wolves were real. I thought she was really going to die. So I chose the path that led to death. With her own hands, she forced her only son onto that path.Harriet opened her mouth, but no sound came out. A crushing mix of absurdity and fear gripped her heart like a hand squeezing tight.Suddenly, she fumbled through her pockets and pulled out her phone in a panic. For a second, I thought she was going to call an ambulance. Or the police.Instead, the first thing she did was open the livestream control panel."Shut it down. Turn it off now. Cut the signal."She shouted into the phone

Like a broken rag doll. My limbs were twisted, my whole body covered in blood. That "gloomy face" she always hated then looked pale, almost transparent.A sharp branch pierced straight through my chest, pinning me to the muddy ground beneath me.Rain kept hitting my face, but it could not wash away that dull, lifeless gray of death.Harriet stood there, completely still. Then suddenly, she laughed. "This prop looks so real."She stepped forward, crouched down, and reached out, her fingers brushing against my cheek, slick with rain, my skin already cold and rigid, all elasticity gone. She kept smiling, but her eyes were empty, like hollow pits."Daniel, where did you get this prop? It's incredible, even the wound!"She reached toward the blood on my chest. "Why isn't the paint dry yet?"She rubbed harder, but the more she wiped, the more it spread, red smearing across her hands, thick, sticky, and warm, the metallic smell clinging stubbornly, even the rain unable to wash it awa

She turned to the director, her gaze sharp and probing. "Daniel, did you add this part? Nice pacing. Good twist."The director blinked, clearly confused. "No, Ms. Lawson. The script ended at the cliff jump. This wasn't planned."Harriet's expression darkened slightly. "Then it was his idea."She gave a small smile, icy and empty. "Not bad. Even prepared fake blood."I was wondering what he packed in his bag. Turns out he was planning to put on a 'victim act' for me."She stood up, strode over to the walkie-talkie, and grabbed it. "Enough. Stop acting. Tell Elliot this has gone too far. If he doesn't come out right now, I'll h

"And, we found a shoe next to the airbags."The director froze for a second, then instinctively looked at Harriet.Harriet's face was dark as she drank in silence. The moment she heard that, she snatched the walkie-talkie, clearly annoyed."A shoe? What's the big deal? He left it there on purpose to scare me. That kid, so now he's trying to get back at me because I tricked him?"She shouted into the radio, "Keep searching. Expand the area. Even if he dug a hole and buried himself, you dig him out and bring him to me."She tossed the walkie-talkie aside and angrily loosened the collar of her shirt."Kids these days are full of tricks. Look at that. He even took off his shoe just to make me worry."She complained to Timothy, "This is what happens when a child isn't disciplined properly. When he gets back, I'm locking him in his room for a month."Timothy tried to calm her down while agreeing, "Seriously, Elliot's being ridiculous. He's not a kid anymore, still playing hide and se
