Chapter 2

Penulis: Ruddy Scholar
I replied immediately.

[I told you, it was an accident. I didn’t check the payment method when I ordered.]

[Who knows? Maybe Alan’s last few relationships fell apart because of your little mistakes!]

My mom’s words made my fingers go numb from anger.

I sent a voice message to yell at them without holding back.

“It’s just one cheap coffee! What dirty thoughts are you all thinking? He’s my brother. What’s wrong with linking his supplementary card? Buying a coffee isn’t a crime! How are his failed relationships my fault now? You guys blew it yourselves! Whenever he brought a girlfriend home, before she could even introduce herself, you were already grilling her about her parents’ pensions, jobs, and property like some IRS audit! Alan’s got no car, no house, no savings. And you don’t think that’s the problem? God forbid a woman has standards! If you were you, would you marry him?”

I finished in one breath.

If Julia had not been pregnant, would they even approve of this relationship?

[Ungrateful brat.]

My dad sent a 60-second voice message.

“How dare you talk to us like that? We sacrificed everything to raise you, and this is what we get. An ungrateful…”

I did not finish listening.

Julia chimed in with a snort. [Oh wow. Even criticizing your parents now? You’re something else. You really know how to stir up family drama, don’t you?]

Alan stayed silent as ever.

An aunt who usually kept to herself piped up.

[Julia, don’t get worked up, and Sofia, just drop it already.]

The other relatives were online, but they were just watching in silence.

Some even messaged me privately.

[Wow, Sofia, big family drama, huh? No other family can turn a fight over a ten-dollar iced latte into World War III!]

Seeing my own family become a laughingstock, I was about ready to ignore it all, shut my phone, and go to bed.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed again. Julia had tagged me in the family group.

I opened it and saw a few screenshots.

[Sofia, do you have no shame? Sending suggestive photos to your own brother? Are you trying to disgust me?]

I had a bad feeling about this. I zoomed in on the screenshots.

The photos were familiar. A tasteful, modern take on a classic dress. A pair of heels to match.

Those are things that I carefully picked out for her as a birthday gift.

How on earth were these photos suggestive?

[Julia, look closer. Those were supposed to be your birthday gifts. I wasn’t sure about your size, so I asked Alan. He’s the one who told me to send the photos. Can’t you read? The messages are right there!]

No sooner had I sent that than Julia sent another screenshot.

It was part of my chat with Alan, but the one important line where he typed, [Send me the photos.] was completely blurred out with pixelated blocks. Only the dress photos remained.

[Ha.]

Julia quickly followed up with a sarcastic message. [In that case, why didn’t you send them to me? Why your brother?]

I tried to keep my cool.

[How many times have I sent you a friend request? Did you ever accept? He’s my brother. What’s wrong with asking him his wife’s size?]

Meanwhile, the relatives who did not know the full story started chiming in.

Aunt Mary: Oh, Sofia. Even between siblings, you need to have some boundaries.

Aunt Philippa: Yeah, sending photos like that to your brother is improper.

Mark: Sofia, that’s really not okay.

What really hurt me were my parents’ messages right after.

Dad: I can’t believe I raised such a shameless brat. You’re an embarrassment!

Mom: You stupid girl! Apologize to Julia.

Absolutely not. Apologizing would be like admitting I actually did something wrong.

I immediately pulled up my private chat with Alan.

[Alan, you’ve got to clear things up in the group. Things aren’t what Julia’s making them out to be. You’re the one who told me to send the photos. And she kept rejecting my friend requests. Clear this up now!]

[Relax. It’s not that big of a deal. Just don’t argue with Julia. Just let her vent a bit, and she’ll let it go. It won’t cost you anything. Just let it roll off your back.]

His flippant, careless response completely set me off.

[Let it roll off my back? Take a look at the group chat right now. They’re calling me a disgusting harlot who throws herself at her brother. Give it another day, and they’ll be accusing me of incest!]

Back in the office, Ralph was staring at his phone with a grin so wide it looked like it might split his face.He walked over and tapped me on the shoulder. “Sofia, that was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. The boss read it this morning and couldn’t stop smiling. He said the writing was brilliant, especially that last part about the company. He even blew a chef’s kiss. We really did go viral. This is a huge win.”Within hours, partnership requests started flooding in.Ralph glanced at the skyrocketing incoming orders and shot me a look that said everything.“Vendors are lining up around the block. They’re all begging to work with us. We’ve got more orders than we can handle. Sofia, you didn’t just clear your name, but you dropped an entire gold mine right in our laps. The boss said you’re getting a serious reward for all this.”After everything went down, I blocked every last trace of the Isaac household from my phone.Debt-collector calls still came on schedule. However, they

The next day, barely past six in the morning, I received a call.It was my mother.I picked it up. Just as expected, my father’s roar came blasting through the speaker. “Sofia, did you do this? The police showed up and took your brother away this morning. Was it your doing?”In the background, my mother was wailing like her heart was being ripped out. “The officers said Alan posted those filthy things online. I want you to get down to that station right now and clear things up! Get your brother out of there!”Even after everything, they were still the same.I kept my voice calm.“Yes. He posted them. The evidence is solid. The police have made an arrest and opened a case.”“Bullshit!”My father’s scream nearly shattered the phone. “How could that be? Alan’s a good kid. He’s always been obedient. He would never do something like that. You’re the one with no self-respect. You probably caused this whole mess yourself with your own reckless behavior, and now you’re trying to pi

I clicked on it. The post was full of malicious insinuations, hinting that I had slept my way up the ladder at the office. The real damage was the two photos attached. Sure, the frosted glass blurred the details, but anyone who knew me would recognize that silhouette in a second.Even worse, the poster had spelled out my name and my company. The comment section was flooded with sleazy, disgusting fantasies and filthy language.I kept my face blank. I calmly turned on screen recording and snapped screenshots of all the critical pages.I knew exactly who had done this.I had just saved the last screenshot when my desk phone rang.It was a direct line from my manager.“Sofia, I want to see you in my office right now,” said my manager, Ralph Bradley, his voice grave.I stood calmly and walked toward his office under the curious eyes of my colleagues.Ralph was behind his desk, looking stern.“Sofia, have a seat.” He pointed to the chair across from him. “You’ve seen what’s onl

I watched them disappear out the door, leaving nothing but a mess behind.I looked around that place. I did not want to spend another second there.I ran to my room, shoved whatever clothes were in season into a backpack, zipped it up, and walked out.A cab was waiting right by the neighborhood entrance. “Downtown, please. The office towers on Xavier Road.”I opened the door and climbed in.The car had barely started moving when my phone buzzed. It was Alan.I swiped to answer.“Hello.” My tone was cold.On the other end came my brother’s furious, choking growl.“Sofia, where in the world are you? Get back here right now!”“I’m gone. Going back to work.”“Work? Screw that! Julia ran off because of you! Happy now? Sofia, mark my words, I’m going to destroy you. You vicious woman, you filthy harlot, just you wait…”He was screaming, completely unhinged.“Beep.”I hung up.The screen clearly showed, “Call recording saved.”Every single insult from that phone call had bee

The family chat went dead silent. After a few seconds, something clatter.I could hear Alan across the table gasp. His phone nearly slipped out of his hand.He shot up from his chair and lunged across the table to grab my phone. “Delete it! Delete it right now, for crying out loud!”I knew he would react like that. So I had leaned back just in time. He grabbed nothing but air. Finally, the group chat exploded. Question marks started raining down.[???][What’s going on?]“Those are fake! They can’t be real!” Julia shrieked.“You’re lying. Those are fabricated. There’s no way you’ve been giving him money.”Even my parents were completely flustered.Mom shouted, “Sofia, retract them! Delete all this nonsense right now!”Dad said, “Sofia, have you lost your mind?”I looked at the screenshots, which were well past the three-minute recall window. “Too late. The evidence is out there.”I tagged everyone in the group chat.[@everyone, uncles, aunts, cousins, everyone. Julia jus

Clinging to a tiny shred of hope, I hoped he would come to his senses.“Ding.”Not a text. Two images popped up.I frowned and opened them. My mind went completely blank. The photos showed a blurry figure showering behind a frosted glass door. The silhouette was unmistakable. That was me.[You took pictures of me in the shower? Why did you do that? What the hell is wrong with you?]Alan’s reply came fast.[Don’t worry about the why.]Then came another message.[Just go along with your sister-in-law’s wishes.][She’s the only girlfriend I’ve got. If you drive her away, I’m going to make your life a living hell.][That’s illegal, Alan.]He did not even flinch. [If you scare my girlfriend off, I don’t care if I go to jail. I’ll make sure you regret it.]I told myself to hold it in and protect whatever shred of reputation I had left. I was going to stop him from actually ruining my life.Maybe because I had gone silent, Julia thought she had me cornered. She made a grand
