Chapter 2

Author: Cloud Long
That evening, I ate a small meal and followed the doctor's orders to rest early.

I was drifting off when I heard the door creak open.

Familiar footsteps. Enzo.

I didn't sit up. I kept pretending to sleep.

He stood in the doorway for a while, then said softly, "Louisa, if you're still awake, can we talk? There are some things I need to say to you."

Sophia must have already told him about the divorce.

I was afraid he'd confront me, and even more afraid he'd simply agree, coolly and without feeling.

I stayed still, feigning sleep.

After what felt like an eternity, I heard him say, "I'm sorry..."

He closed the door and left.

I lay there with my eyes open, and it took me a long time to realize that those words had been his thoughts, not spoken aloud.

I'm sorry. Again, I'm sorry.

He had forgotten our dinner plans so he could go to the airport and pick up Sophia himself.

I sat with the pregnancy report in my hands, waiting until the middle of the night.

All I got was a phone call. "I'm sorry, there's a situation at the docks. I need to handle it. Don't wait up. Get some rest."

And I, fool that I was, had worried about him. "Please be safe. I'll wait for you."

He paused. Then his voice softened. "Mm."

It was Sophia who let it slip later. There had been no trouble at the docks that night. He'd been throwing a welcome dinner for her.

During that pause, when I was telling him to be careful, did he feel even a flicker of guilt?

If he did, he wouldn't have sent away the dog we'd raised together for three years, just because Sophia said she didn't like it.

He had said, "I'm sorry, Dobby needs to go away for a while. Louisa's always been so understanding. I know you won't mind."

If he felt any guilt at all, he wouldn't have chosen to save Sophia when we were kidnapped.

All he had for me was a thought: "I'm sorry..."

When I finally came back to myself, my pillow was soaked with tears.

My hand found my stomach without thinking. "I'm sorry, baby... Mommy's so sorry..."

The next morning.

Sophia said, "I told Enzo about the divorce. He..."

Seeing her hesitate, I pressed. "What happened? Did he say something?"

A secret, shameful hope rose in my chest.

Had he refused the divorce? Did he not want to let me go?

Sophia smoothed my hair in a soothing gesture.

"Enzo was furious when he heard. He wanted to talk to you right then, but I stopped him."

"I'll keep working on him."

My heart plummeted.

I knew his anger was nothing like what I had hoped for.

But strangely, I wasn't afraid. Not even a little.

Before, his anger had terrified me, because in those moments I couldn't hear his thoughts.

I held Sophia's hand. "Thank you, Sophia."

"I've been thinking. This is between me and Enzo. I can't let you get caught in the middle."

"When he comes home, I want to talk to him myself."

The easy smile vanished from Sophia's face, replaced by worry. "But I'm worried about you. Let me talk to him a bit more first."

I shook my head. Once I made a decision, I didn't change my mind.

I asked, "Could you just let Enzo know to come home early tonight? I'm afraid if I ask him directly, he'll be too angry at me to show up."

"Of course. We're sisters. That's hardly a favor."

I felt grateful beyond words. I had lost my husband, but at least my family was still by my side.

Evening came again. I ate early and settled into the sitting room downstairs.

It was the one room everyone had to pass through to enter or leave the main house.

Even with the doors and windows shut, I still felt cold.

The house steward, Ross Moretti, brought me a blanket. "Donna, you really should go back upstairs and rest."

I shook my head, determined to wait for Enzo.

Something occurred to me. "Which estate was Dobby sent to? I want to bring him back."

Ross frowned, looking uncomfortable. "The Don had Dobby sent away for your health, Donna. I'm afraid we can't bring him back just yet."

I smiled and waved him off.

I knew his words were nothing but a clumsy excuse.

At some point, I fell asleep. When I woke, I was back in bed.

The familiar scent of his cologne lingered in the air. Enzo had carried me upstairs.

Just then, I heard footsteps outside the door.

I eased the door open and saw Sophia tiptoeing out.

In the hallway light, her elegant evening gown and jewelry glittered.

I said nothing. I ran to the window.

She climbed into a black sedan. A tall man stood beside the car.

Under the headlights, I recognized him instantly.

At the same moment, fragments of his thoughts reached my ears:

"The ringleaders behind this attack..." "Needed a date for the banquet. Thank God for Sophia..."

When I heard that second thought, a stabbing pain shot through my lower abdomen, exactly like the day I lost the baby.

A long time passed before he spoke, his voice strained. "Yes. I'll say my piece, and then I'll go.""And you won't come back? I don't need you picking apart my new life."He didn't answer that."During the kidnapping, I thought the kidnappers would assume the person I rescued first was the one who mattered most. My men had already infiltrated the building, and I believed they could get you out safely.""I wasn't fast enough.""I never had feelings for your sister. Not once. You could hear my thoughts. You know who I really loved.""The dog wasn't about Sophia. You were pregnant. I was worried about the effect on you.""And France? The fact I'd never gone was pure coincidence. I could take you there now.""The times I didn't come home, I was investigating the people behind the kidnapping. I thought seeing them punished would make you feel better.""That banquet, Sophia told me you'd asked her to go as my date. That's the only reason I agreed to take her.""The marks on her neck. "Sophia."Enzo spoke her name."If Louisa wants, I'll hand you over to her. If she's not interested, I'll have someone else handle you properly.""Every ounce of pain Louisa suffered, I will make you pay back a hundredfold."Sophia shrieked. "You wouldn't dare! I'm a Cattaneo. If I disappear, my family will come straight for you!"The corner of Enzo's mouth twitched. "Disappear? I'll simply let them know you went abroad.""Nobody's going to believe something that flimsy."Enzo nodded. "All right. Then I'll send you back and tell them you acted on someone's orders and opened fire inside the Bianchi estate, leaving Louisa and me seriously wounded.""Then they can decide for themselves whether you were trying to destroy the alliance between our two families."Sophia's lips began to tremble.Enzo took a forged handwritten letter from Ross. The penmanship was a perfect copy of Sophia's."I'll have this delivered to the Cattaneos along with travel records. They'll have very little reason to

Only Enzo and Ross remained in the study. When Sophia saw Enzo, tears welled in her eyes. She tore free from the guards."Enzo, those men locked me up. They said it was your order."She looked at him with wounded eyes and reached for his sleeve, but he stepped aside.Sophia froze. "What's the matter? Are you angry at me?"Enzo didn't spare her a glance. He gave Ross a slight nod and turned toward the window.Ross stepped forward and firmly pressed her into a chair, keeping her from lashing out."Enzo!"Her voice cracked with tears. "Don't do this. You're scaring me..."Enzo spun around. Sophia's face lit up and she started to speak, but he cut her off."You're scared?"Enzo took one step closer and leaned down.Sophia sensed that something was very wrong. She shrank back in her seat. After a stunned moment, she scrambled to put distance between them."You only think about your own fear. Did you ever stop to think about how scared she was that day?"Sophia blinked. "She? You mean Louisa

The car vanished down the road. Enzo stared in that direction long after there was nothing left to see."Don, your wound needs immediate attention."Ross spoke carefully.Enzo shot him a cold look. Ross bowed. "You have every right to blame me. I'll accept whatever punishment you see fit. But your wound can't wait any longer."Enzo's chest heaved, but he forced himself back inside to the study.Sophia moved to follow, but Ross stopped her."Ms. Cattaneo, I'll need to ask you to stay in your room.""Rest?"Sophia's voice rose. "That's not rest. That's imprisonment! How dare you?""Enzo!"She called after him, but he kept walking as if he hadn't heard a thing. She tried to dodge the guards closing in."I'd like to see any of you try to touch me. When Enzo comes to his senses, every last one of you will pay for this!"Ross watched Enzo disappear into the house. "These are the Don's orders. Take her."Sophia screamed that it was impossible, but she was half-dragged, half-escorted away.A m

The bullet hit the floor at Enzo's feet."I'm leaving. I want a divorce."The words barely made it out of me.The gunshot instantly drew every guard on the estate.Heavy footsteps converged from all directions. Within moments, I was surrounded. Over a dozen guns pointed at me."Nobody fires without my order."Enzo stepped forward. I backed up several paces, pressed myself against the wall, and swept my gaze over every face in the room. The gun stayed trained on Enzo.Sophia's voice came out trembling. "Enzo..."I fired another shot at her feet.Every guard had their sights locked on me. Any one of them could have dropped me on the spot.My eyes were burning. "I want a divorce. Say yes."Enzo's expression was impossible to read. "Louisa...""Shut up. Don't say my name. Just answer the question. Yes or no.""Have someone get me a car and a large amount of cash. Right now!"Enzo frowned and started to speak, but another shot cut him off.Bang! The bullet struck my right shoulder. My hand

Even though I was inside, wrapped in a blanket, a chill seeped into my bones.I started coughing violently, doubling over as if I might cough up a lung.I lifted my head, my eyes bloodshot. The door was cracked open. Sophia hadn't closed it all the way when she left.I followed the silk scarf on the floor up to the woman standing over it, to a face I had known for more than twenty years."Why'd you go quiet?"The caller lost patience and hung up.Sophia looked panicked. "You heard that?"My eyes were red but my expression was blank. "Heard what?""Sophia..."Panic overtook her. She lunged and snatched the phone from my hand."How dare you switch my phone?"Instead of an explanation, I got accusations."You're the one who took the wrong phone. After that call, I didn't even touch it!"She insisted. "You still have no right to answer my calls without permission."I looked away. I almost laughed.I asked, "So are you going to explain, or not?"Sophia hesitated. "What exactly did you hear?
