Brian’s face turned ice-cold. Without a word, he grabbed Candice’s wrist and stormed out of the room.

As they left, Candice turned her head and shot Chloe a quick look, the challenge in her eyes impossible to miss.

That night, the hospital room was completely silent. Chloe sat by the window, staring at the hazy moonlight outside, lost in thought.

Her phone suddenly buzzed. It was Brenda.

“Feeling any better?”

Chloe froze. She hadn’t told Brenda that she was in the hospital. Realizing that she had probably heard it from Nick, she tightened her grip on the phone.

“It doesn’t hurt as much now,” she said quietly.

What she didn’t add was how humiliating it all felt.

“Good,” Brenda replied, her tone calm and distant as always. “I heard from Vanessa that you plan to sell your shares in Vision Studio soon. Nick just opened a branch in Riverton. He’s interested in acquiring Vision to use it as a launch pad for his expansion.”
