Chapter 1

Brian Shaw cheated.

Chloe Spencer stood outside the fitting room of a bridal boutique and watched her fiancé fool around with another woman.

“Brian,” the woman said with a teasing smile, “tell me, does this dress look better on me or on your fiancée?”

“Of course it’s you. I can’t get enough of you in bed. Doesn’t that prove how irresistible you are?”

She laughed softly, pleased with his answer.

“I want you to remember me forever. On your wedding day, on every anniversary, you’ll always think of this moment. You’ll think of me.”

Listening to their whispers, Chloe felt her whole body go cold.

She finally knew why he had been taking all those business trips lately. The man who’d always seemed so devoted to her had found someone else.

Her stomach turned. She forced herself to walk away, got into her car, and drove off.

They had been together for seven years. They built their company, ‘Vision Studio’, from scratch, side by side.

Her sister had warned her that Brian wasn’t a good man. Even now, a message from her flashed on the screen: ‘We, the Spencers, won’t be attending your wedding. You’re on your own.’

Chloe’s eyes burned as she typed back,

‘Then there won’t be a wedding.’

It took a while before her sister replied.

‘If you mean it, come home to Brookshire in a month. If not, don’t ever call me your sister again.’

Chloe sent a single word—‘okay’—and put her phone away.

She started the car and drove off.

Moments later, Brian stepped out of the boutique with his lover in his arms. When he spotted Chloe’s license plate disappearing down the street, his expression stiffened. He pushed the woman’s hand off his arm and straightened his clothes, instantly regaining his usual polished composure.

“I’ll have my assistant drive you home,” he said flatly.

“But you promised to go shopping with me,” she pouted.

Brian reached out and ruffled her hair, but his gaze cold and penetrating. “Be good.”

The warning in his tone made her back down immediately. She sulked but followed his assistant out.

Once she was gone, Brian looked at his reflection in the car window. There was no trace of guilt, no hint of the man who’d just betrayed his fiancée.

When he returned home, Chloe’s car was still in the garage. She was sitting in the driver’s seat, staring down at her phone.

“Just got back?” he asked, opening her door. He tossed his suit jacket onto the passenger seat and leaned in close.

His black shirt was half-unbuttoned, revealing the edge of his chest muscles, clean and unmarked.

No trace of another woman.

When she didn’t answer, he bent down as if to kiss her.

Chloe locked the screen and raised a hand to stop him. Her tone was sharp.

“Are you that scared I’ll go out?”

He paused. “Of course not. You can go anywhere you want. I just don’t want you to feel lonely when I’m away.”

He smiled, wrapped an arm around her waist, and spoke in that coaxing tone she used to melt for.

“Tell me, sweetheart, who made you so upset?”

Chloe just looked at him icily. His handsome face was as charming as ever, and his ability to read her moods had once felt like love. Now it felt like a performance.

She shook her head and turned away. Her voice was calm but distant.

“Brian, you’ve been busy lately. Maybe we should call off the wedding. I wouldn’t want you to spread yourself too thin.”

Brian’s face darkened. He thought she was being unreasonable. After all, he was someone important now.

“What did you just say?” His tone hardened.

Chloe met his eyes.

“I said our wedding isn’t necessary anymore. I don’t want to get married.”

When she tried to leave, he grabbed her arm, his anger rising fast.

“I’m working this hard for us… For our company, for our future! Do you want our child to start life at a disadvantage? I just got back from a business trip, and instead of welcoming me home, you throw a tantrum? When did you become like this?”

Chloe stared at him, listening to his self-righteous words, and almost laughed.

The man standing before her felt like a stranger. Every word out of his mouth was a lie, the kind most men tell because even when they cheat, somehow it’s always the woman’s fault.

As if his betrayal was something she’d forced him into.

The wedding was two months away. Her sister had given her one month to handle everything.

In one month, Chloe would make sure Brian Shaw disappeared from her life completely.

Chloe went straight upstairs, into her room, and then to the bathroom to wash up.

Brian followed her, wrapping his arms around her from behind and softening his tone.

“It’s all my fault, Chloe. I’ve been too busy lately and didn’t think about how you felt. I’ll cancel all my dinners for the next few days and come straight home after work, alright?”

Chloe looked up at the mirror. The reflection showed a man speaking gently, trying to please her, and her lips curved into a faint, mocking smile.

“What’s the point? I—”

Before she could finish, Brian’s phone started ringing. The ringtone was a sweet, romantic pop song that had recently gone viral.

He’d always used plain system tones before. Chloe remembered when they first started dating, back when their company was just getting off the ground. She’d once asked him to change his ringtone to a love duet so they could match. He had refused, saying it wouldn’t look professional when meeting clients.

So it wasn’t about professionalism—it was just that she wasn’t worth the change.

Brian glanced at his phone and quickly hung up. “Spam call,” he said casually.

Chloe’s lips pressed into a thin line. She had clearly seen the caller ID: My Candle.

She gave a quiet “oh” and said nothing.

The phone rang again. He declined. Then again. Finally, he turned his back to her and answered.

“There are a few big projects at work right now,” he said. “I’m really busy, so I need you to understand. I’ll be working late tonight, but I’ll take you to the bridal fitting tomorrow morning. Don’t wait up. Get some rest.”

Chloe didn’t respond. She just kept brushing her teeth, watching his reflection in the mirror as he left the bathroom.

Once he was gone, she picked up her phone and searched online for the song she’d just heard.

The first comment at the top read:

They say love burns fast, but the right person keeps the flame steady.

A dull ache spread through her chest.

Without hesitating, she opened a real estate app and listed their villa for sale.

In a month, she’d be leaving for Brookshire.

Everything here… this house, this city, and Brian Shaw meant nothing to her anymore.

Nick didn’t make things difficult for her. He took out his phone, typed something, and held the screen toward her.Chloe let out a quiet breath of relief, scanning the QR code. “How much was the coat?” she asked as she waited for him to give her the number. When she looked down at her phone, though, it wasn’t a payment page—it was a Venmo friend request. She blinked, confused for a second, then accepted it anyway. Maybe the amount was too high, so he thought it was necessary to add her first.Across from her, Nick’s long, slender fingers tapped his screen twice, accepting her request.“I’ll transfer the money to you right now,” Chloe said quietly, already pulling up the payment window.Nick put his phone away. “I don’t know the exact price yet. I’ll ask the brand for a quote and let you know.”“Oh.” Chloe nodded, a little embarrassed. He gave her an unreadable look before turning and walking into the apartment with the tiny coat in hand. For a moment, Chloe stood there hesitat

Nick’s coat had gotten soaked that day at the hospital. After being discharged, Chloe had taken it home and washed it by hand. It was still hanging in the laundry room. Now that she had another chance to meet him, the slump she’d been in finally started to fade. She gave herself a silent pep talk, rehearsing what she’d say to convince Nick to buy Vision Studio’s shares. But when she stepped into the laundry room and saw the coat hanging on the rack—shrunken to nearly half its original size—her mind went completely blank.Panicking, Chloe hurried over and grabbed it down, checking the label over and over just to make sure it really was his coat. It was. She’d ruined it.Heart sinking, she quickly pulled out her phone and searched online:“How to fix a shrunken wool coat?”Most of the results were useless product ads. With no reliable solution, she clutched the tiny version of Nick’s coat and drove to the nearest dry cleaner for help. The clerk took one look at the brand tag, ey

Patrick stepped into Nick’s walk-in closet, following Nicole’s instructions to pick out what Nick should wear for tomorrow’s meeting. He searched through every rack and shelf but couldn’t find the black wool coat she had insisted on. Then, a memory hit him. He hesitated for a moment before saying carefully, “Nick, I think that coat’s still with Miss Spencer.”Nick frowned. The thought of Nicole’s temper already gave him a headache. She had a bad habit of tattling to their parents and grandfather whenever he annoyed her. The last time he got on her nerves, she’d complained to their mother, and he’d been forced to go on blind dates for a month straight.“Get it back from her,” he said flatly. After leaving Nick’s penthouse, Chloe drove straight back to her grandmother’s old house. On the way, she called Vanessa and asked her to help find someone willing to buy shares of Vision Studio. She held fifty-one percent of the company, and selling it all in one go wasn’t easy. Not every fi

“I only turned down an arranged engagement with no feelings involved and had one failed relationship,” Chloe said quietly. “That’s not exactly a crime. So why, Mr. Horden, do you insist on holding it against me like I ruined your life?”Her voice was steady but weary, the kind that carried more frustration than weakness. She wasn’t breaking down, just tired of being cornered.Nick said nothing. He stood by the balcony, flicking the crushed cigarette butt into the trash with casual precision.Silence settled between them. After a moment, Chloe realized there was no point in losing her temper with him. He wasn’t someone she could afford to provoke. She took a deep breath, forcing her tone to be calm.“Apologies for bothering you. I’ll take my leave.”She turned to go, her expression faintly despondent.Nick really did look like one of those male leads in a drama, the kind who gets rejected, then rises to power just to crush the woman who walked away. She hadn’t expected that afte

After all, they had gone to the same high school once.Chloe was good at planning and strategy, but negotiating at a business table had never been her strength. Still, she was already here. Walking away now would be pathetic. She sat down on the sofa. The man across from her looked at her with the kind of calm superiority that made her feel like she was being evaluated.Refusing to let herself appear weak, Chloe took a quiet breath, stood up, and met his gaze directly.“Horden Group wants to expand into Riverton. Starting from scratch would take a lot of time. And for someone like you, Mr. Horden, time is money.”Nick didn’t react.Chloe drew in another steady breath. She could make a perfect pitch deck or marketing plan, but face-to-face business talk was another story. Still, she pressed on.“Vision Studio meets all the conditions Horden Group is looking for. It’s the fastest way to enter the market here. I don’t think you’d turn down such a good opportunity over some minor pe

Nick reached out and took the phone from her hand. His long, elegant fingers brushed lightly across her palm, leaving a faint tingling sensation in their wake.He quickly pulled his hand back, his expression calm as he lowered his gaze to the screen. Without a word, he tapped “confirm” beneath the bold red word ‘Defeat’ and exited the game.Chloe pressed her lips together, thinking for a moment before saying quietly, “If you’d like, I could carry you sometime.”Nick raised an eyebrow. “Carry me?”There was a note of disbelief in his tone, his sharp, dark eyes fixed on her as if testing her confidence. His look triggered her competitiveness, and she immediately pulled out her phone.“I’m a great jungler. I used to rank nationally with several heroes.”As she spoke, she unlocked her phone, swiping through the home screen to find the game and prove it. But after scrolling through the apps, she realized the icon was gone. She had deleted it long ago.Nick was still watching her, his
