Back in his office, Cane stood by the window, scrubbing at his jacket with a handkerchief. Dust from the Azure Tower still clung to the expensive fabric, a rude reminder of the humiliation he had just endured. He scrubbed so hard that the fabric nearly tore.

"Alpha," a small voice interrupted his scrubbing. "We need to release a statement as soon as possible so we can get on top of this."

Cane stopped scrubbing. He threw the ruined jacket onto the floor and turned to face the direction of the voice, three lawyers from the city’s most aggressive firm, a crisis PR manager who charged by the minute, and Liam, who was standing in the corner holding a tray of drinks, trying to make himself invisible.

"A statement?" Cane repeated, his voice dangerously low. "You want me to tell them that my building fell down? That I almost killed three hundred people?"

"No," the PR manager, a woman named Sloan with eyes like a cat's, corrected him. "We tell them that the building was attacked. We tell

Liam sat in the corner booth, staring into his coffee. Only this morning he had drunk enough coffee to make his hands tremor, yet his eyes threatened to close from exhaustion. The circles under his eyes were noticeable from a mile away. He was wondering when he would ever be done with the hell his present life was when a voice made him jump. "Is this seat taken?" Liam jumped, nearly knocking his cup over. He looked up to see a woman in a baseball cap and oversized sunglasses sliding into the booth opposite him. Did she seriously think this was an appropriate disguise? "Miss Stone?" Liam whispered, looking around frantically. "You shouldn't be here. If the Alpha sees you..." "Cane is busy counting his money and ignoring safety reports," Cassie said, lowering her glasses. "Liam, we don't have much time. I know about the Azure Tower report." Liam swallowed hard. "He... he told me to shred the physical copy. He said Marcus was overexaggerating the damage, that he was being dramatic."

Before Mane was thrown in jail and Cassie reappeared, Cane never had any interest in Mane's Enterprises other than seeing the stock rise so he could get his profit. That was all, but now that Cassie was interested in running her father's company, Cane was suddenly interested in the company. Now that he had taken full control of Mane Enterprises as the highest shareholder of the company, he had taken some steps to make sure he would stay in control and to stay ahead of any trouble Cassie and Aser might want to bring his way. The first thing he did was send Caro and her two children away. At first, she was adamant about never leaving, but after threats of taking her children from her, she still didn't leave, so he had to forcibly remove her and her children from the house. "I'm glad you sent that woman away." Isabella said after Caro left. "Now, we can properly focus on growing our empire. Now that you have taken over Mane's company, I was thinking that I could..." "Let me stop y

Cane was fairly confident that he was going to come out of this fight victorious, but now, seeing the two of them here in his office made him even more confident. He reckoned that if they had even a shred of evidence that would nail him, they would have used that instead of coming here like this. "Do you want to bet on that?" Aser growled. "We saw you, Cane. Don't forget that." Now, Cane saw Aser as a rival when he was kicked out of the family to go start his own business. One thing Cane would never admit to himself was that Aser was better than him or that he was terrified of him. "But the Council didn't," Cane fired back, his gaze shifting to Aser. "I don't know what you guys thought you saw, but in the eyes of the law, if it's not on tape, it didn't happen. The girls are halfway to Russia by now. Varga is completely off the grid. You have nothing to go off on." He spread his arms wide. "You can't nail anything to him." Cassie couldn't believe the scene in front of her. She wa

The first thing Cane did on getting back to his room was call his lawyer. Never mind that half the people in the city were sleeping, as it was almost four in the morning. The phone finally connected on the fourth ring. "Alpha Cane?" The lawyer asked groggily. "Did something...""I have the retainer." Cane barked, cutting him off. "I’m wiring you two million dollars in the morning. I want you to file a counter-motion immediately. I don't care who you have to wake up. I want this on the judge’s desk by 8 in the morning.""Against the asset freeze?" the lawyer asked, waking up instantly at the mention of two million dollars."No." Cane said, his eyes bright with malice. "Against the divorce petition. I want you to contest the validity of her identity. I want you to claim that the woman calling herself Cassie Stone is a mental patient or a fraud impersonating my deceased wife. I don't have to teach you your job now, do I?""No, Alpha.""And," Cane continued, "I want you to file for an e

Liam parked the black sedan in the dark, as expected, his hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles had turned white. Sweat ran down his back and forehead despite the freezing temperature. His heart hammered against his ribs, and he could swear it would be heard if Cane was in the car with him. "Kill the lights." Cane ordered when he reached his side of the car. His voice was tight with a mix of desperation and anticipation. Liam obeyed wordlessly. "Get the bag," Cane barked, making Liam scramble out of the driver’s seat, rushing to the passenger side to grab the bag. At the last minute, he grabbed his phone. He knew what he had to do. He was about to drop his phone in his jacket when Cane looked at him. "What are you doing?" Liam froze with his hand still inside his jacket, and he turned slowly to face the Alpha. He would have raised his hand up in surrender if he wasn't holding his bag. "I... I was just checking the time, Alpha." Liam stammered, his voice crackin
