The mood in the boardroom was tense, but because of the stock market, this time around. Despite Cassie’s speech at the Gala, the insurance department were panicking.

"Our premiums have tripled," the financial officer said tersely. "The bombing at the Gala made us high risk. The insurers are demanding we bring in an external crisis management officer to oversee the transition."

Cassie sat at the head of the table, tapping her pen. "I am managing the crisis. We arrested the Syndicate leadership."

"The Board agrees with you, Miss Stone," Vance said. "But the insurers are not taking no for an answer, so they have appointed a specialist from London. He’s here to audit and predict our financial health."

Cassie sighed. "Fine. Send him in. I’ll give him five minutes."

The specialist was a tall blond man in a suit that looked too expensive for an auditor. He wore thick-rimmed glasses, and he had a slight limp that he carried confidently. He was handsome in a way that made him seem approachabl

By the time he returned to the office building, it was late at night. The night security shift had just started, so the lobby was quiet and peaceful, which made Aser's entrance even more jarring. He was wet and rough from blood and sweat, unlike the cool Alpha they knew. Behind him walked Matthew, carrying the evidence in sealed paper and a tablet. "Sir!" The head of security rushed forward, hand on his taser. "Alpha Aser, you are barred from the premises." He said as respectfully as he could. Aser didn't stop walking. "Stand down," Aser growled. "Unless you want to explain to her why you stopped the man trying to save the company," Matthew said. Since Mathew was the head of security, the guard had no choice but to listen to him. Aser marched to the elevator and swiped his pass to no avail. "She locked me out," Aser shrugged. Matthew stepped up and swiped his own card. Seconds later, they were on their way up. Aser double-checked everything he needed to present his case

Aser walked into Madame Laveau's lone house in the countryside dripping wet and his eyes burning with a desperate need to find out what the heck was going on. Madame Laveau didn't look up from her mortar and pestle on his arrival. "You're frustrated and wet. A terrible combination." "He’s inside. He's the one, I know it, but everything says I'm wrong. Even the stone you gave us. He's worming his way into her head right now." He rambled. Laveau stopped grinding and turned to look at him. "You should trust your gut." "But the stone..." he sputtered. "He must have predicted you would try to fish him out. He has rewritten his very core." "He passed a DNA test," Aser argued. "Cassie tested his cup, and it matched." "Blood Proxy, it's that simple." Laveau spat in disgust. "You are dealing with a professional liar, Alpha. He has prepared for your tests." "I don't care about his tricks," Aser growled. "I need Cassie to see him so he's exposed. The compass isn't working." "Because he

Upon coming back to the city with Cassie, Maria, and Rayna, Aser knew it was time to double, even triple, the security around his family. He had Mathew hire a special security unit to guard him and his family at all times."Perimeter check," Matthew rumbled from the front seat of the lead SUV of the convoy that took them home from the airport. "The street is clear," the security chief replied. "K9s are useless against him," Aser muttered, staring out the tinted window. He was gripping Cassie’s hand so hard his knuckles were white. Cassie squeezed his hand back. "We trust the tech, baby. As long as he has a pulse, he can be detected."The convoy pulled into the underground garage, and they stepped out. Instantly, an army of guards surrounded them up until they reached the door."This is no way to live," Rayna whispered, holding Maria close. "We’re prisoners in our own house.""We’re safe," Cassie said gently. "And safe is better than free right now."They rode the elevator up to the

The next day was the Summit, and Cassie didn't anticipate how nervous she would feel taking a global stage. Sure, she had given dozens of speeches back home, but this was a completely different continent. The Green Room was the room the organizers had assigned to Cassie for her to get ready. Makeup artists, tech support, and assistants buzzed around, prepping for the keynote speech that would open the Global Logistics Summit. In the midst of the chaos, Cassie Stone stood calmly in her midnight blue suit. Her hair was pulled back in a sleek, severe ponytail that exposed the sharp line of her jaw. Aser was right by her side, looking handsome in a charcoal Armani suit, but his energy was wrong. He kept looking at the door as if he was expecting Cane to come through the door any minute. Now that he couldn't rely on his sense of smell to sniff him out, he wanted to make sure he had eyes on the door at all times. "Aser," Cassie said softly. "Stop."Aser froze and turned to her. "He could

The three of them drove around in hope of finding the institute. Even when the GPS kept misleading them. Finally, they found a small townhouse that stood out because of its lack of decoration. Just a small bronze plaque that read: Icarus private consultations. They parked across the street and tried to gather information from there. "Three heat signatures on the ground floor," Matthew reported without looking up from his device. "Two stationed guards near the door. One person in the back that is likely the surgeon." "And the upper floors?" Aser asked. "Walled off with lead." Cassie said. "My scanner can't penetrate the recovery rooms. If Cane is recovering from surgery, he's up there." Aser nodded. "We go in quiet. If the Weaver is mid-procedure, we don't want to startle him. A slip of the scalpel kills him." "I want him alive, Aser. He needs to stand trial." "We'll try," Aser promised, though his tone suggested he wouldn't try very hard. On his signal, they left the vehicle w
