I used to believe there was nothing worse than losing the person you loved but on this warm summer afternoon, I realized the man I loved was never even mine.
Minutes before this harsh revelation tore through my perfect life, I sat still in Thane's car. I smiled as I looked at the ring on my finger. I brushed my fingers over the cold crystal.
Eight years of love. Eight years of passionate love making. My hands fell on the bump. The little evidence growing within me. Soon, I would deliver our child and our lives would be complete.
I glanced at my watch again. He was taking too much time saying hi to his father and if I didn't go in, we would be late for the doctor's appointment.
My shoes clicked on the marble floor as I moved through the hallway trying to locate the drawing room.
“The princess will arrive soon. She has agreed to the marriage.” I heard a voice boom from behind one of the doors and I instantly slowed down.
I recognised that voice. It was Alpha Lucas, my future father-in-law. Thane replied but his voice was too low to carry past the door so I edged closer, pressing my ears against the heavy oak.
“Once she births that child, we would send her away. This pack needs a strong and influential Luna.”
“I will do what is expected of me.” I heard Thane reply and the ground beneath my feet tilted. Hot flashes swept through me.
I tried to move but my feet felt stuck in the ground. My hands trembled slightly and tears burned through my throat. The man I was about to make a father saw me as nothing more than a breeder. How had he kept up with his lies for so long? I felt so sick that I instantly wanted to throw up.
How could I have been so stupid? What signs had I ignored?
The door creaked open and I jumped back. Thane’s face lit up with a smile when he saw me.
The face of a traitor. I shoved my hands into my pockets so he wouldn't see how badly they shook.
“Missing me already?” He pulled me in for a hug and I stood there stiffly.
Alpha Lucas walked out of the room and barely looked at me for a second. I knew he hated me just like he hated my father. I was not surprised he was the mastermind behind an arranged marriage behind my back but Thane’s agreement has ripped my heart.
“How long have you been here?” He asked, pushing strands of my hair out of my face.
“Not long.” I managed to reply despite the ball in my throat.
“We should leave.” He checked his watch. “Or we would be late.”
I let him lead me to the car like a wolf sentenced to death.
We were twenty minutes away from his father's estate when he turned to me.
“You are awfully quiet.”
I adjusted in my seat.
“Are you angry at me?”
I looked out the window so he didn't see the tears threatening to fall.
“Should I be?” I asked flatly.
“What does that mean?” He touched my thighs and I flinched. Confusion creased his features.
“When were you going to tell me?”
“Tell you what?” His voice was up a notch.
“About the princess you are to marry.”
A horn blared and his arms tensed as they tightened around the wheel.
“Who told you?” He asked.
I don't know what I had been expecting but the fact that he wasn't denying it told me everything I needed to know. My heart literally felt like it would implode in a matter of minutes.
I undid my seatbelt and exhaled through my mouth. The tears ran down my cheeks now.
“How long have you known?”
“You are getting this wrong.”
“When did you know I am nothing more than a breeder and I was never going to be your Luna.” I screamed at him.
“Amy, I need you to calm down. Being worked up like this is not ideal for my child.”
I blinked. His child? He usually said our child because it was ours. We had planned the names and the future we wanted for our child. Now, it's simply his child?
“My father has made alliances with the Moonlite park since I was a child and it is an alliance blessed by the moon goddess herself.”
“So you knew all this while?” I asked, my voice quieter than I intended.
“I never agreed.”
“Liar.” I spat at him. I undid the top buttons of my shirt. I couldn't breathe. My vision was growing blurry and a hot sensation was building in the pit of my stomach. I was going to die. This betrayal was going to take my life and that of my unborn pup.
I needed to be strong for him. My hands clutched my stomach.
“Do you love her?”
He swallowed and wiped the sweat off his head with the back of his palms. I laughed dryly.
“You never loved me.”
“Please don't say that.”
“Because it's true? Is this because I am an Omega and not of royal descent?”
He exhaled. “You know those things have never mattered to me.”
I bit my lower lip. “I don't know anything. As a matter of fact, I don't think I know you.”
“Can you just let me focus on the road?” He snapped and I curled into my chair as if trying to disappear. In eight years, Thane has never raised his voice at me until today. Until the day I realize I would not be his Luna. I felt used and discarded but I would not let this happen.
“I would not let you take my child away from me. You and your princess can start a family but you are never taking my child.”
“She can't have a child. My father knows this and that is why…” His voice trailed off.
“That is why you kept me around until I got pregnant. You didn't even have the decency to tell me. You were just going to take my baby away?”
“You were never meant to know this because I had a plan. I didn't want you to get hurt but my father.”
“Don’t blame your father, Thane. You are a grown man now and you are just like him.”
His eyes left the road and landed on my face. There was something twisted and ugly in his eyes. The sharp blare of a horn filled the car and Thane’s eyes returned to the road. His entire body stiffened.
“Amy…” he shouted.
A pair of blinding headlights cut through to us as the rubber tires screened against the asphalt. Thane jerked the steering wheel, cursing and swearing loudly.
Everything was happening so fast and so slow at the same time.
The car lurched violently to the side and my body slammed forward and then against the door. I held on to my stomach with both hands.
“Thane.” I screamed.
“I am going to save you.” He reached over from his seat and pushed my door open. He was trying to push me out of the car when we crashed into something solid.
I felt the pain ripple through every inch of my body before I heard the impact. Metal folded and the glass exploded everywhere. The seatbelt cut into my chest, stealing the air from my lungs.
My scream disappeared as something struck the side of my face. I felt like I was falling for one horrifying second as I struggled to grab anything to steady me. Panic flashed white across my vision and the world turned upside down.
The car tumbled multiple times and my shoulders slammed against the door. Something crashed against my legs and the sound of twisting metal filled my ears.
“Thane.” I screamed, reaching blindly for him. There was another violent roll and his body was thrown towards me. His head struck the glass with a sickening crash before he collapsed against the seat, half his body on me.
The car finally skidded off the road and came to a halt. For a half a second everywhere fell completely silent before I heard the ringing in my ears and the frantic pounding of my heart.
There was a hissing sound from somewhere above me and the smell of gasoline filled my nose. And blood.
I turned my head, my vision blurred. “Thane?”
He didn't move. I tried to reach for him and a sharp pain tore through my abdomen. My hand flew to my stomach and I was met with a familiar warm sticky liquid that was spreading beneath me.
“Thane.” I screamed. I looked down to see my clothes had been soaked with my blood. Or his. I couldn't tell at this point.
My hands began to tremble as panic viciously crawled its way to my throat. I tried to move and there was a deep crushing pressure between my thighs. I went still and in seconds, it returned even stronger and my entire body tightened.
My eyes went to Thane. He wasn't breathing. I shook him desperately as the smell of gasoline grew stronger.
I pushed myself against the wrecked seat and the movement sent agony ripping through my abdomen.
“Help.” I screamed.
My voice cracked and I screamed louder until I couldn't hear myself, the sound of my voice swallowed by the ringing in my ears.
My vision began to blur and the contractions came quicker. I pressed my hand against my stomach and muttered a prayer to the moon goddess.
“Help.” I screamed and the sound of an ambulance tore through the air.
Amy's POV I had spent days reading everything I could find about Thane Sterling and his family. He was married to Seraphina and they had a little boy. I stared at my son through the screen and ran a finger across it. My lost child. I noticed how he wasn't identical to Ronan and a part of me thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to take the job.The choice was quickly ripped away when Ronan's medical bill had arrived in the mail alongside my termination of employment from the jewelry shop. Right now beneath the scorching sun, I was trying to locate Thane's mansion.“Mummy, who do we know here?” Ronan whined, his little hands tugging at my skirt. I swallowed. “Nobody.”“Oh my goodness.” A woman who was walking by suddenly started taking quick steps towards us. I grabbed Ronan’s hand. “That hair.” She crouched in front of him and he hid behind me. “Is this child royalty?”“He is not.” I snapped at her. “He is just a normal child who played with his grandma’s dye.”She blinked and sudden
Amy's POV Five years later…“I promise you I am going to pay by the end of month.” I rubbed my palms together while moving from one foot to another. “I can drop my credit card.” I said, frantically searching through my purse. “Just please treat my son.” The doctor who was an elderly woman looked at me with so much pity. Over the last five years, I had learned to live with it. “You can drop your card at the reception.”I exhaled shakily and closed my eyes for a second. “Mummy.” Ronan called weakly. I carefully wiped the blood from his nose. “Am I going to die?”I bit on my lower lip and shook my head. “No baby. Superheroes don't die.”“I would send a nurse to take him now.” The doctor said and I simply nodded. I was too exhausted to say a word. Working two jobs and taking care of a child who was terminally ill all by myself had aged me so quickly. I followed closely as Ronan was placed in a room. I stood outside the glass doors watching them for a minute before going to drop off
Thane’s POV I had died and I should have remained dead because the pain I felt the second I opened my eyes was out of this world. I felt so raw. Every inch of my body felt foreign and painful. “Thank goodness.” I heard a woman's voice cry out as soft palms cradled my face. “You’re awake.”I inhaled deeply. I couldn't recognise this scent. “He’s awake.” She screamed and I winced. There was a ringing in my ears. My eyes slowly peeled open as I heard footsteps approaching. My father was the first person I saw.“Where am I?” I groaned. “You are home, son.” He sat beside me and ran his fingers through my hair.“You scared me.” The woman from earlier said, grabbing my hands. I stared at her blankly, relying on my brain to make me remember her. The harder I tried to think, the tighter the migraine around my head became. I groaned. “It’s me, Seraphina.” She glanced at my father. “Your fiancée.”“Seraphina.” I said slowly like I was trying to taste the letters of her name. “The doctor
Amy's POV I was slipping in and out of consciousness when I saw the doctor pulling my son out of me. I grabbed the sheets as tears ran down my cheeks. Darkness pressed against me and my eyes dimmed.“Stay awake.” A nurse said, pressing a wet towel against my face. “There’s another one.” The doctor announced, moving around frantically. Another one? I wasn't expecting twins. I tried to ask them what was happening but my throat felt so raw that talking felt impossible. “I would need you to stay awake for me.” the nurse said, propping my head up with a pillow. The doctor strapped my legs open. “Push.”A scream tore from my throat as I pushed with whatever strength I had left. I felt something pop out of me in one smooth glide. The doctor picked up my second child. He was smaller than the first. My brows creased. He wasn't crying. Why wasn't he crying? The doctor quickly handed him over to a nurse who held him to her chest and ran out of the room.“Where is she taking my baby?” I scr
