The elevator ride down to the lobby felt like it took a lifetime, at least it felt that way to her.

Cassie stood in the center of the steel box, her back straight, her chin up, staring at her reflection in the elevator. Her guards stood in the corners, but Cassie wasn't looking at them. She was looking at the woman in the reflection. She looked like she belonged in the white suit and pretty heels and calm facade, but deep inside, she felt like she was about to vomit.

The minute the elevator slid open in the underground garage, her mask slipped, making her knees buckle a bit.

"Ms. Stone?" The nearest guard quickly reached out to steady her.

"I'm fine," she breathed out, though her voice lacked the boom it had upstairs. "Just... get me to the car."

They moved quickly toward the convoy of black SUVs waiting for her. As Cassie approached the middle vehicle, the back door opened from the inside. She climbed in, sinking into the comfortable leather seat. The door slammed shut, effectively s

Cane was fairly confident that he was going to come out of this fight victorious, but now, seeing the two of them here in his office made him even more confident. He reckoned that if they had even a shred of evidence that would nail him, they would have used that instead of coming here like this. "Do you want to bet on that?" Aser growled. "We saw you, Cane. Don't forget that." Now, Cane saw Aser as a rival when he was kicked out of the family to go start his own business. One thing Cane would never admit to himself was that Aser was better than him or that he was terrified of him. "But the Council didn't," Cane fired back, his gaze shifting to Aser. "I don't know what you guys thought you saw, but in the eyes of the law, if it's not on tape, it didn't happen. The girls are halfway to Russia by now. Varga is completely off the grid. You have nothing to go off on." He spread his arms wide. "You can't nail anything to him." Cassie couldn't believe the scene in front of her. She wa

The first thing Cane did on getting back to his room was call his lawyer. Never mind that half the people in the city were sleeping, as it was almost four in the morning. The phone finally connected on the fourth ring. "Alpha Cane?" The lawyer asked groggily. "Did something...""I have the retainer." Cane barked, cutting him off. "I’m wiring you two million dollars in the morning. I want you to file a counter-motion immediately. I don't care who you have to wake up. I want this on the judge’s desk by 8 in the morning.""Against the asset freeze?" the lawyer asked, waking up instantly at the mention of two million dollars."No." Cane said, his eyes bright with malice. "Against the divorce petition. I want you to contest the validity of her identity. I want you to claim that the woman calling herself Cassie Stone is a mental patient or a fraud impersonating my deceased wife. I don't have to teach you your job now, do I?""No, Alpha.""And," Cane continued, "I want you to file for an e

Liam parked the black sedan in the dark, as expected, his hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles had turned white. Sweat ran down his back and forehead despite the freezing temperature. His heart hammered against his ribs, and he could swear it would be heard if Cane was in the car with him. "Kill the lights." Cane ordered when he reached his side of the car. His voice was tight with a mix of desperation and anticipation. Liam obeyed wordlessly. "Get the bag," Cane barked, making Liam scramble out of the driver’s seat, rushing to the passenger side to grab the bag. At the last minute, he grabbed his phone. He knew what he had to do. He was about to drop his phone in his jacket when Cane looked at him. "What are you doing?" Liam froze with his hand still inside his jacket, and he turned slowly to face the Alpha. He would have raised his hand up in surrender if he wasn't holding his bag. "I... I was just checking the time, Alpha." Liam stammered, his voice crackin

While Cane was having a meltdown in his office, he had forgotten he came home with one of his employees. Liam Harrison was a generic employee, he could be the only one in the office, yet Cane wouldn't even notice him. There were thousands of employees like that under him.Liam Harrison had been working as an assistant to an operation manager in Cane's company for three years now. Just last week, after the whole brouhaha that took a hit to the company's image, several employees, including most of Cane's secretaries, had quit. For this reason, Liam was suddenly bumped up to Cane’s assistant. It was one of the worst experiences of his life, yet he couldn't quit because he needed the money. He was stuck with Cane. Since he started, he has worked overtime and even had to follow him home. Cane never knew he was there, which was both good and bad for him because Cane didn't remember him long enough to let him go home. Tonight was one of those nights, he had been about to enter his office w

It was past midnight, and Cane Marcom was still in his home office. Ordinarily, by this time, he would either be in bed or he would be in one of his mistress' houses. Some days, he would be at a bar, and on some rare occasions, he would be working in his office, but he was never at home. Those days had become a thing of the past for him ever since Cassie miraculously resurfaced with his brother almost a month ago.Presently, Cane Marcom sat in the high-backed leather chair of his private study, a crystal glass of scotch resting on the desk in front of him. It was a fifty-year-old scotch, a bottle reserved for victories. That was what he chose to drink tonight because he was sure he had won.His extraction team in London would have breached the safe house ten minutes ago. By now, they should be securing the child, and by the time the sun rose in the sky, his once useless daughter would be on a private jet heading to a secure location known only to him in Russia. He would wait a few hou

The morning after the gala, the headlines were brutal. If Cane thought he could charm his way out of the scandal, he was dead wrong. The press was having a field day.“Marcom Meltdown: Alpha Cane Loses Cool at Pierre Hotel.”“The Return of the Dead: Cassie Stone Takes the Throne.”“Stocks Plummet as Mane Enterprises Faces Federal Probe.”Each headline was even juicier than the last. Cane threw the tablet onto his desk in frustration, making it the fifth gadget he had smashed that morning alone. He told himself not to care about public opinion. The time for playing the nice, misunderstood son-in-law was over."Get the legal team on the line." He barked at his new assistant, a terrified girl who looked like she wanted to be anywhere else than in his presence. "And tell security to sweep the house for bugs again. If I find one more bug, heads will roll.""Yes, Alpha." She scurried out of his office gratefully.Cane leaned back in his chair, rubbing his throbbing temples. He had a sligh
