Like the sacrificial lamb that she was, Cassie was led to the altar by her father. The man she was marrying was on the other side of the altar . This was the first time she would be laying her eyes on the man. It was the things she knew about the man that scared her.

"Smile, Cassie." Her father said with an easy smile on his face. It was almost as if he hadn't locked her up in her room for the two weeks that led to this awful day. "If you ruin this for me, you will live to regret it. Your husband is not as merciful as I am."

She fixed her face until it looked like she was enjoying this. She said nothing to her father, only choosing to focus on not tripping on the heavy silk gown she was in.

She let out a relieved breath when she reached the altar without any hitch. Cane examined her with cold blue eyes. The only thing Cane could think of was the million other things he could be doing today if not for this wedding.

Alpha Mane had insisted on giving away his daughter in an elegant ceremony the old fool didn't even offer to pay for. Left to him, he would have done the initiation ceremony with a few witnesses and be done with it.

"Stop shaking, will you?" He didn't bother to hide the anger and disdain in his voice. The girl in front of him looked as if she would rather run away from this unfortunate event. He slid a thick diamond ring on her finger with instructions to take care of it.

The ceremony was mercifully brief, a dry recitation of pack law and oaths from the couple to serve and respect each other until the other time. Then, came the painful part where Cassie was seared with hot branding iron to signify her position as the new Luna of the pack.

The moment the priestess declared them mated, Serena howled painfully but Cassie kept my face in check. This was not the time to show weakness, her father was watching.

Hours later, the ceremony had receded into a more intimate atmosphere. All the invited guests mingled and networked while uniformed servers went around with champagne and finger food. They had all forgotten about the wedding they were here for.

Cassie sat alone in a corner, in pain from the scar on her neck. Her new husband was nowhere in sight. He stormed out of the hall the minute they were done with some of his men. She had no idea what she was supposed to do or where she would go.

As if her confusion sent out a wave, two men dressed similarly to the men that followed Cane out approached her.

"Luna Marcom, we have come to take you to the Red Mansion. Please, follow us." She was led out outside where a big black car was waiting for her.

The moment she climbed in, she could no longer see out. The whole ride to her new cage, she felt like she was being kidnapped. She didn't know how long the ride was but she was glad when the car pulled to a stop.

The pack house was a huge mansion. "It is easily twice your father's mansion." Serena noted but she shut her down.

She couldn't get over the fact that she would be living in another mansion. This would merely be another cold place that she lived in, it would never be her home. The guard helped her out of the car so she didn't trip. She stared up at the house, with no idea what or where she was supposed to do or go.

"Please, follow me. Mother will be waiting for you." The guard told her. She had no idea they would be living with his mother. She wondered what this would mean.

She followed the men that hauled her suitcase and bags into the house. The interior was gorgeous with gold lining every decor. It wasn't the look she would have chosen, she noted.

She was almost at the stairs when she heard someone clear their throat. She turned around to find an older woman glaring at her. She was flanked by a bevy of maids with heads bowed in reverence.

Isabella examined her with the same cold blue eyes as her son’s. For some reason, this girl grated on her nerves.

"Let's see how long it would take for me to break her." Isabella thought to herself. She walked towards Cassie slowly, her heels clicking against the wooden floor. She stopped inches away from my face with her head tilted, analyzing every detail of her smooth youthful face and her shiny silk dress. Cassie didn't need to be told that this woman was her new mother-in-law.

"Were you not taught the proper etiquette on how to present yourself when you get to a new place?" Cassie was surprised by the sheer hatred in the woman's eyes.

Nevertheless, she remained polite. "Good evening ma'am. I'm Cassie and it's nice to meet you, Mother!" She said as politely as she could muster.

"Mother?" She scoffed. "What makes you think that I would ever give birth to a fat pig like you?" That was what made her step back. Her father hadn't allowed her to eat anything other than salad and water for this woman to call her a fat pig.

Cassie was the farthest thing from fat. She was small boned. Some would even call me petite.

"I..."

"Your father went on and on about his precious daughter and how beautiful she was and this was all he was bragging about."

"I'm sorry, Mother but..."

"Shut it, I don't want to hear a word out of you. Listen to me, young lady, I run this house which includes you. If you dare go against me, I'm going to make your pathetic life even more miserable!"

The next morning, Cassie woke up in the master bedroom of their house, where the air was warm and still compared to outside, where the storm had just subsided. Cassie woke up slowly. Her body felt heavy and light at the same time, yet every muscle ached. Her ribs throbbed where Aser had tackled her, and her knees were scraped raw from the slide across the concrete. She opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling, waiting for the sound of an orange explosion ringing, but nothing happened. There was only silence. "You're awake." Aser's voice rumbled from beside her. Cassie turned her head on the pillow to find her man lying on his side, watching her. His eyes were usually gold when he was being an Alpha, but this morning, they were a warm, chocolate brown. "How long have you been watching me?" "About an hour." Aser admitted, reaching out to brush a stray hair from her face. "I just wanted to make sure you were really here. That yesterday wasn't a hallucination." Cassie closed her e

"Slow down," Varga hissed at his lieutenant, who was driving them to safety. "You're going to get us pulled over. And if the cops stop us before I can dispose the remote in my pocket, I'm going to kill you." "I’m driving the limit, boss," the lieutenant argued, sweat beading on his forehead. "But we’re exposed out here. We need cover." Varga looked at his phone to see that the director had sent a set of coordinates. It wasn't the usual safehouse it was even more fortified with security. It was the Syndicate’s main building in the city, and the location was mostly kept a secret. "Take the next exit." Varga ordered. "Are you sure? That’s a dead end." "Just drive!" Varga checked the sky through the window. It was pitch black so he couldn't see anything. "We lost them," Varga whispered, trying to convince himself. "The blast must have scrambled their comms. They’re probably still digging bodies out of the rubble." He smiled cruelly. Yes, he hadn't killed her, but he couldn't imagine

For Cassie, the world didn't explode with a bang, it exploded with a pressure that forced the air out of her lungs and a light so bright her vision blurred into black. She felt herself being lifted off the ground by Aser. His arms were bands of steel around her waist, his heavy body curling around hers in mid-air, creating a bubble around her before the shockwave hit. When she did hit the ground, it was a physical blow. The stage behind them made way as the wood and metal that held it up erupted into shards. The force made them hit the ground even harder. They landed a few feet away from the stage, sliding across the polished stone of the plaza. Aser took the entire impact, and he grunted in pain when his back hit a table. Then, the sound returned. "Cassie!" Aser’s voice was ragged, right in her ear. "Cassie, baby, are you okay?" Cassie coughed and pushed against Aser’s chest, trying to sit up. Her ears were ringing violently, and she was generally uncomfortable. "I’m... I’m o

Beneath the skyline, the plaza had been transformed. Where there had been rubble and police tape a few weeks ago, there was now a sprawling, open-air ballroom. White silk tents billowed in the evening breeze. A massive stage had been erected at the far end, complete with a digital screen displaying the Mane-NovaTech logo.Underneath the elegant stage, between all the metal and heavy cables, was a man wearing a catering uniform. He checked his watch for the nth time that evening. It was still early on, but the guests were starting to arrive. He reached for the gas tank connected to the industrial heater meant to warm the VIP space and disconnected the standard tank to replace it with the modified one. It looked identical to his satisfaction. He connected the hose and taped a small, black receiver to the back of the valve."The oven is preheated," he whispered into his radio. From a rooftop half a mile away, Dmitri Varga watched through a spotting scope. He smiled."Good, get out of the

The next day, Cassie’s office had been turned into a makeshift boutique for an exclusive shop to get her a custom-made dress for the gala. Racks of couture gowns surrounded her, and three nervous assistants of the fashion house were fluttering around Cassie, pins in their mouths. "It’s too tight on the ribs," Cassie muttered, wincing as another tightened the corset. "I can't breathe, plus I need to be able to run if necessary." "Run?" Paolo, the lead designer, looked horrified. "Miss Stone, this is a custom silk chiffon. You cant, no, you will not run in silk, you will strut." "Pray the building doesn't catch fire. Loosen it." Aser sat on the sofa, watching the spectacle with amusement. He had a tablet in his lap, trying to approve important documents for work, but his eyes kept drifting to Cassie. "You look beautiful, baby." Aser commented as he eyed her appreciatively. He was right. She looked beautiful in the golden gown that would make sure she was the sole center of attent

In an unregistered building overlooking Central Park, Dmitri Varga stood in the center of the room, dripping wet. He hadn't changed out of his clothes since the warehouse disaster.Sitting in a leather chair facing the window was a distinguished old man who looked like a respectable university professor. He dressed the part, too, in a tweed jacket and with his silver hair neatly combed back. This was the Director of the Syndicate. "Repeat that for me, Dmitri," the director said softly, not turning around. "I want to make sure I understand what you're telling me.""It... it was a cyberattack," Varga stammered. "Cassie Stone did this. She's the reason the entire operation is cooked.""And the crypto wallets?""Gone," Varga whispered. "The keys were stored locally, so we lost access when the drives melted, meaning she locked us out of 1 billion dollars."That finally made the director turn to look at him with such coldness on his kind, grandfatherly face that Dmitri stumbled lightly."1
