Chapter 2

Autor: Existence
As I watched Meghan drink the chicken soup, I drifted into thought. No matter how wild Meghan used to be, she had always known where to draw the line. She had never let those men appear in front of me.

But this time, she had crossed every line for the sake of the child in her womb. She had once despised illegitimate children, yet now that she was carrying Hector's baby, she cherished it above all else.

When I didn't react, she cautiously tested the waters. "Ashton, once the baby is born, I'll have him call you 'Dad' and make him the rightful heir to the Gregory family. Is that alright?"

She didn't want her child to experience what she had, so she chose to sacrifice my dignity instead.

I smiled. "Sure."

Seeing the stunned look on her face when I agreed so readily, I felt nothing at all. After all, everything would be over in three days. Why would I care about being tricked into raising someone else's kid?

After Hector learned that his child would become the Gregory family's heir, he grew even more arrogant. Pointing at the flowering dogwood tree in the garden, he said, his smile sly, "Meghan, I don't like dogwoods. They look too old-fashioned. Roses are much prettier."

After hearing that, Meghan immediately ordered someone to cut down the dogwood tree and replace it with roses. We had planted that tree together the year my parents passed away.

At the time, she had said, "Ashton, the dogwoods will witness my love for you. I'll protect you from now on. You'll never be alone again."

As the harsh sound of the chainsaw rang out, the dogwood tree crashed to the ground. I stood by the second-floor window, staring at the broken branches and scattered leaves below. The last trace of feeling inside me faded away.

When Meghan came upstairs, she happened to see me standing by the window. She felt a rare pang of guilt, perhaps because my back looked too lonely. She walked over and hugged me from behind.

"Ashton, it's only a tree. If you like it, I'll have someone buy an estate someday and fill it with dogwoods for you," she said.

Her embrace still felt warm, but she smelled of the cologne Hector always wore. I gently pulled away and turned to look at her. "Meghan, do you remember when that tree was planted?"

Her gaze flickered for a moment. It was obvious that she had forgotten long ago. "Why bring up the past? I'm so busy now. I don't have the time to remember little things like that."

She changed the subject with a hint of impatience. "By the way, there's a charity gala tonight. You don't need to go. I'll bring Hector instead."

Seeing how self-righteous she looked, I suddenly found it funny. "You're taking a kept man with no status to an event like that. Aren't you worried people will call the baby you're carrying a bastard?"

Meghan's face darkened, and her voice turned cold. "The baby I'm carrying is the Gregory family's eldest son. He's not a bastard!"

At the mention of the word "bastard", she became visibly agitated.

Lucie was Mom's best friend. Back then, Meghan's dad, Raymond Gregory, had taken advantage of her. She became his mistress in secret and ultimately died in sorrow.

Meghan loathed the Gregory family for causing her mom to die in misery, and she despised being known as an illegitimate daughter just as much. Yet, she was now following in her father's footsteps.

I looked at her calmly. "So? Just to keep your child from being born out of wedlock, you're going to bring the baby's real father in front of me and flaunt him? Meghan, you keep saying you hate your dad, but look at yourself now. How are you any different from him?"

A sharp slap echoed through the room.

Meghan pulled her hand back. Her chest heaved, and her eyes were filled with shock. She seemed unable to believe she had actually hit me, but her anger had gotten the better of her. "Shut up! Don't you dare compare me to that old man!"

She shouted hysterically, "I'm protecting my child! I'll never let my child go through what I went through!"

I covered my numb cheek, tasting a hint of blood in my mouth.

Meghan didn't look at me again. She slammed the door and left. Before long, I heard Hector softly comforting her downstairs, and she gradually calmed down.

I walked to the mirror, looked at the red mark on my face, and pressed an ice pack against it. The mark slowly faded, while the coldness in my eyes deepened.

When Meghan was taken away, her eyes were vacant and filled with despair. "Ashton, if I had never gone back to Halston and had stayed in Calder to live an ordinary life, would things have turned out differently?"I looked at her and answered coldly, "There are no what-ifs."Meghan let out a bitter laugh before the police led her to the patrol car.The case went through trial quickly. The evidence was solid, and Meghan was ultimately sentenced to life in prison. After settling everything in Halston, I returned to the Nicholson estate in Calder. It was the last thing Mom and Dad had left me.I had already dug up the rose bushes in the yard, just like I had uprooted whatever love I once had for Meghan. I hired someone to turn over the soil and plant a new sapling. It wasn't a dogwood this time, but an oak tree. An oak tree stood strong through everything. I figured it was time for me to start a new life.Once in a while, late at night, I still dreamed of that young woman running th

When Meghan was first sent to Calder, the Nicholson family's business hadn't found success yet. We were just an ordinary family. When I first saw Meghan, she looked as delicate as a doll. Her eyes were filled with fear and wariness. Feeling sorry for her, I walked over and gently patted her head. "Don't be afraid. This will be your home from now on."She trembled slightly but didn't pull away. After a long moment, she took out a chocolate truffle I had never seen before from her pocket and placed it in my hand.Later, she started traveling back and forth between Halston and Calder. Every time she returned, she would bring me the same kind of chocolate.By then, the Nicholson family's company had already gone public. I knew the brand of that chocolate and had tasted many that were even better, but the only ones I truly loved were the ones Meghan gave me.After I finished that box of chocolates, news came that Lucie had passed away. Meghan hurried back to Halston and disappeared for

After returning to Calder, I went to the prison first. The driver responsible for the car accident five years ago was about to receive a sentence reduction because of good behavior. In the visitation room, the man's gaze flickered the moment he saw me. He couldn't bring himself to look me in the eye. "Mr. Nicholson, I've already said everything there is to say. It really was an accident. The brakes failed—"I scoffed and placed the half-decrypted hard drive on the table. "An accident? The emails on this drive show that a week before the crash, five million dollars was deposited in your bank account. The money came from an overseas account, but the IP address was traced back to Halston."The man's expression changed instantly.I said, "I also discovered that you have a son who had leukemia. Five years ago, he suddenly had the money for a bone marrow transplant. Now he's studying abroad, living quite comfortably."I looked him in the eye and said slowly, "If I hand all this evidence

The smile on Hector's face froze. "W-What did you say? How is that possible? Where's Meghan? I'm calling her right now!"I said, "Go ahead. While you're at it, ask her where she's staying tonight. After all, she might not even have enough money to rent a hotel room anymore."Hector dialed Meghan's number with shaking hands. Her voice came through the phone, exhausted and irritable. "Stop bothering me! Get lost! All of you!"Hector's face turned ashen.I stood up and walked over to him. "Mr. Manning, how does it feel to watch your dream of marrying into a wealthy family fall apart? Crawl out of here the same way you stepped over me to get in."The bodyguards took Hector away, but I didn't feel much satisfaction. All I felt was deep exhaustion.I looked around at this house that had once been filled with memories. Now it only felt empty. There was nothing left here worth staying for.I picked up my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in a long time. "Hello, Uncle Morgan. It'

The next day, in the conference room on the top floor of the Gregory Group building, Meghan sat confidently at the head of the table. She was certain that those senior board members would side with her.I had my lawyer read the motion to remove her from office.Meghan leaned back in her chair, looking completely at ease. But as the voting began, the smile on her face slowly froze. The board members who had always greeted her with smiles all cast their votes for me.In the end, the motion passed unanimously. The conference room fell dead silent, except for the sound of Meghan's heavy breathing.Meghan's eyes became bloodshot. "T-This can't be right! Have you all lost your minds? I'm the Gregory family's heir! You'd rather support Ashton than me?"In the heavy silence, one of the board members, Mr. Chambers, spoke slowly. "Meghan, we really can't support you anymore."He sighed, then took out a thick stack of reports and slid them across the table to Meghan. "Take a look for yourse

The moment I heard the word "basement", my blood ran cold. Meghan knew perfectly well that I suffered from claustrophobia. She had once stayed by my side all night with the lights on, promising me that she would never let me be trapped in the dark or in enclosed spaces again. My heart sank. "Meghan, you know I have claustrophobia—""You brought this on yourself!" She cut me off coldly and gestured to the bodyguards. "Take him downstairs! Without my permission, nobody is allowed to let him out!"The basement was cold, damp, and completely dark. I curled up in a corner, trembling all over as it became harder and harder for me to breathe. "Help… Somebody help me…"I gradually lost consciousness. Just as I thought I was about to die there, an urgent shout suddenly reached my ears. "Ashton!"When I woke up, I was lying on the bed in my bedroom.Meghan sat beside my bed, looking exhausted. When she saw that I was awake, she let out a sigh of relief and reached for my hand.I instincti
