Chapter 2

Auteur: Luminance
The only thing that could save his company was a new, non-toxic, eco-friendly base material. It had just been developed by Ludwig Environmental Materials LLC, a subsidiary of my Grandview Group.

This material was one of its kind on the market. We had the sole patent rights. It could completely solve the problem of harmful substances exceeding safety limits.

I never wanted to give them a chance in the first place.

Our material had a very high production cost. They would not be able to afford it.

But Albert’s elderly father had shown up at my father’s door more than a dozen times, begging on his knees.

I eventually gave in and offered them a seat at the negotiation table. We agreed to meet on that day and close the deal.

Albert had also called for a media conference at seven in the evening. He planned to publicly announce our partnership and unveil a sample of the new material.

I could not figure out why he would impersonate me.

When I looked at my subordinate’s name on the phone screen, I understood instantly.

The person originally coming to negotiate with him was my project manager, Victor Perle.

Victor had a sudden acute appendicitis attack right before departure. He was taken to the hospital.

I had just returned early from a one-year overseas business trip. I intended to inspect the hotels under Grandview Group.

I instantly decided to step in for Victor.

Also, at our hotel, all presidential suites could only be booked by VIP clients or by my direct order.

If Albert had met Victor instead, he would have used his presidential suite as proof that he was a close friend of mine. After that, he would have pressured Victor into lowering the partnership price.

After all, as far as anyone knew publicly, I was still overseas. It would have been the middle of the night over there. I would have been asleep.

By the time Victor signed that contract in black and white, it would not have mattered if I denied it later. The deal would already be done.

Honestly, you had to hand it to him. It was a pretty clever play.

But the truth was different. Albert was not a VIP at our hotel. He was also not my friend.

Who exactly was bold enough to give him a presidential suite?

I ignored the crowd’s chatter and looked at the hotel front desk clerk. “Who is your front desk manager? I want to see them.”

“Pah!”

The front desk clerk gave me a contemptuous look.

“Do you want to see our front desk manager? Look at you. You’re a total mess. Who are you to see her?”

I could not be bothered to argue with her. I took out my phone and called Grandview Group’s corporate customer service number.

Within three minutes, a woman in a tight skirt suit and heavy makeup hurried out of the lobby, swaying her hips.

I looked at her name badge.

It said, [Front desk manager, Megan Lund.]

Before I could even speak, she pointed at me and started yelling, “What’s wrong with you? You actually called corporate to file a complaint?

“Do you even know who I am? I’m Mr. Ludwig’s fiancee, the future owner of Grandview Group. You’re a broke nobody. You can’t afford to mess with me.”

The front desk clerk chimed in as well.

“That’s right. Get a good look, you idiot. Watch out, or Megan will call that man back down here to deal with you.”

I frowned and sized up Megan.

I remembered that one year ago, before I went abroad, the general hotel manager had mentioned a change regarding the Riviera hotel‘s front desk manager.

It seemed like she was the one who had helped Albert jump the line.

Judging by the front desk clerk’s attitude, the two of them had been throwing their weight around the area under my name for quite some time.

I pulled out my phone to call someone and look into what she had done at the hotel.

By the next second, she swung her hand hard and slapped my phone to the floor.

She shrieked, “How dare you sneak a picture of me? You shameless creep.

“What, you’ve never seen a beautiful woman before? Are you here just to get your eyeful?

“Trash like you is just disgusting.”

The tourists nearby had no clue what was actually happening. They just joined in on the harassment.

“That’s not all. She also worked with a supplier of low-quality ingredients. She took kickbacks and illegally made over seven hundred thousand dollars.“The evidence is right there. Grandview Group has officially filed a report with the authorities. We will make sure she faces every single legal consequence.”After hearing that, Megan’s legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor.Albert’s eyes darted around. He began to stir up the GreenSource Tech Group employees behind him.“Don’t listen to him! If GreenSource Tech Group goes under, every last one of you is out of a job!“Corbin did this to us. He cut off our way to make a living.“Everyone, come with me. We need to demand an answer from him!”Hundreds of GreenSource Tech Group employees were incited by him. They grew restless and began to approach me.I remained calm as I said, “Everyone, calm down. I also have a whistleblower report right here. Charles spent over a year digging to get this.“Albert had a gambling addi

I smiled coldly. I was not afraid of him. I said indifferently, “Albert, I’ve hated ultimatums my whole life.“Do you want to play games? Fine. I’ll play with you.”With that, I hung up the phone. After work that evening, I had just driven my car up from the underground garage when a dense crowd of people immediately surrounded me.There were reporters from major media outlets. There were also over one hundred employees of GreenSource Tech Group holding signs.Albert and Megan stood at the very front.I pushed open the door and stepped out fearlessly. Everyone immediately crowded around me.“Mr. Ludwig, is it true that you secretly took photos of Ms. Lund?”“Why did you refuse to cooperate with GreenSource Tech Group and push them into a corner with no way out?”“Do you really feel no guilt at all when you see an old man kneeling on the ground?Albert seized the opportunity. He pointed at me, and he incited his employees to fight me.“This is him, Corbin Ludwig! He tries

Victor’s words completely shattered Albert’s hope.“How is this possible? You’re actually Mr. Ludwig...”I ignored him. Instead, I turned to look at my assistant following behind me and ordered, “First, put together a special investigation team immediately. Go through every hotel under Grandview Group, especially Riviera’s branch.“Second, look into Megan. Find out how many people she has given special treatment to under my name since she was hired.“Third, every manager, security guard, and front desk worker at that Riviera hotel is to be fired on the spot. That includes the executives who hired Megan. Demote them and fine them according to company policy.“All staff involved in this debacle will be added to the industry blacklist. We will circulate their names across the entire hospitality sector. They’ll never be hired by any hotels again.”After saying this, I stopped looking at Albert and Megan. I walked straight toward the elevator.I had only just taken a couple of steps

“Sign the contract with me right now!“The bank only gave me seven days without seeing a contract. If you mess around and delay signing again, I swear I’ll kill you.”I lowered my eyes and looked at the hand gripping my collar. I let out a cold snort.“Oh. Aren’t you Mr. Ludwig of Grandview Group? Why are you yelling about wanting to see him?”Upon hearing that, Albert froze. He became even angrier.“Don’t play dumb with me.“You recognized me already, yet you still didn’t call us out. You’ve been putting on an act from the very beginning. You deliberately messed with me, didn’t you?”The more he talked, the angrier he got. He raised his other fist and prepared to punch me in the face.My gaze turned sharp. I raised my hand, grabbed his wrist precisely, and twisted it hard.He winced in pain and immediately let go of my collar.I took a step back and adjusted my collar. I said in an indifferent and deliberate tone, “Mr. Zorn. Are you trying to start trouble in the Grandvi

“Let’s go! The press conference is still on!”After I was locked in the holding cell, I actually found it to be a rare moment of relief.Ever since I turned eighteen, I had been handling the various affairs of Grandview Group. For ten whole years, I had worked like a hamster on a wheel.I ran non-stop without ever daring to rest.Without my phone, it allowed me to catch my breath. In the holding cell, I met a man named Charles Carroll. He was a forty-two-year-old senior reporter at a media company. He had been doing in-depth investigative journalism for nearly twenty years. As we communicated more, it turned out he had inside knowledge about Albert’s GreenSource Tech Group that I never even knew.At the same time, he also told me the reason why he had been brought in.His eight-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with acute leukemia. For two years, he poured every last dollar of his savings into her treatment and ran up a huge amount of debt.Just a few days ago, he final

Albert and Megan had just returned to the hotel room when Albert got a reminder from the bank that his payment was due on his phone. He slapped his forehead and realized that he had forgotten the important matter. He quickly picked up his phone and called the contact person at Grandview Group. But no matter how many times he called, the phone kept saying it had been turned off.He instantly became furious. He picked up the phone again and called Victor. The phone rang for a long time before someone answered. He was about to lose his temper, but the voice on the other end was not Victor’s. It was an old woman’s voice.“May I ask who’s calling?”“Who’s this? Put Victor on the phone.”“Oh, I’m Victor’s mother. He just had emergency surgery for acute appendicitis. He’s too weak right now and has already gone to sleep.”“I need to talk to him about something really urgent.”Victor’s mother sighed.“I’m sorry, but he was given a painkiller shot. I can’t wake him up at all.”Alb
