Chapter 3

Autor: Crispy Coco
That sentence was a poisoned dart. It stabbed into my already numb heart and twisted.

I gripped the railing and walked down the stairs, one step at a time.

When Kyle saw me, a flicker of guilt crossed his face before it was replaced by his usual arrogance.

He let go of Selena and strode over to me, looking down his nose at me.

"Good, you're awake," he said, his tone a command. "Selena is carrying my child, so she's very delicate. From now on, you'll be responsible for taking care of her. Consider it a test for you to become a proper Luna."

That damn test again.

I remembered the first time he'd asked me to make a pearl. He'd soothed me with the same words. "This is a test from the Moon Goddess, Althea. If you endure this, you will be my perfect Luna."

After that, every time he died recklessly, every time he made me suffer that life-draining agony, he'd use the title of "Luna" to trick me. Like dangling a carrot in front of a donkey that it could never reach.

I used to believe him.

Not anymore.

"Kyle," I said, looking at him calmly. I was surprised by my own composure. "Let's break the mating bond."

The air went still.

The arrogance on Kyle's face morphed into shock, then into pure rage.

"What did you say?" He grabbed my wrist, his grip so tight I thought my bones would shatter. "Break the bond? Althea... have you forgotten who saved your life? Don't even think about leaving me! Not in this lifetime!"

The possessiveness in his eyes chilled me to the bone.

But I knew it wasn't love.

He yanked me towards him, sniffing roughly at my neck before shoving me away, his eyes filled with hatred.

"That filthy scent again! Who is he! Who's the bastard you've been seeing behind my back!" he roared, like a cornered beast.

"I haven't..." My defense was pathetic and weak.

"Haven't you?" Selena cooed, sliding her arm through Kyle’s. "Darling, don't be angry, it’s bad for you. Maybe… Althea just made a little mistake. We can give her a small punishment, just to help her remember her place."

Her eyes were like a viper's as they landed on me.

"I've never seen a real mermaid before," Selena said, her tone innocent but her words dripping with venom. "I'm pregnant, and the doctor said I need to stay happy. Althea, could you show me your tail? To entertain me?"

For a mermaid, that is the ultimate humiliation. Our tails are only ever revealed to our mates, in the most private and sacred moments.

"No..." I shook my head, tears of shame burning my eyes.

Kyle's complicated gaze fell on me. He was silent for a moment, then his voice was cold as stone.

"Do it."

His voice carried the undeniable power of an Alpha command, crashing down on me like a mountain.

The force compelled my body, tearing at my will. I fell to my knees in agony as my legs dissolved in a shower of silver light, merging into a shimmering, ornate fishtail.

It slapped weakly against the cold floor, like a beautiful creature on the verge of death.

Selena laughed with delight and even took out her phone to take pictures.

I looked up, my vision blurred by tears, at the man I had loved with my very life. My voice was filled with despair.

"Kyle, I wish… I wish you'd never saved me."

His rage froze on his face.

Just then, his phone rang.

Kyle answered it, and his expression changed dramatically.

"What did you say? My father is dying?"

Selena's eyes lit up. She looked at me and smiled.

"Darling, this is a perfect opportunity," she said. "Use Althea's pearl to save the old Alpha. He'll be so impressed… and then all the power he still holds will be yours."

Warm sunlight slipped through a gap in the curtains, falling on my face.I opened my eyes to an unfamiliar but cozy room. The air was filled with the faint, fresh scent of herbs and woods."You're awake?"A gentle voice spoke. I turned my head and met those familiar golden eyes.Orion.He gently helped me sit up. "The healer said you were just exhausted." His eyes were full of undisguised tenderness.I was confused. "Why did you..."He smiled softly and finally told me the truth.I, Althea, was Orion's fated mate.Years ago, it was he who had followed the Moon Goddess's guidance to a beach where he found me being hunted by humans. He saved me. But he was so badly injured from killing the hunters that he passed out, only for Kyle to arrive moments later and take the credit. That was why Orion's eyes felt so familiar the first time I saw them. They were the eyes of my true savior, seared into my memory.Out of guilt, Kyle had hidden my identity from the world all these years. And though

He hadn't eaten or slept in three days, his face covered in stubble. He clung to a sliver of hope—the man in black had jumped after her. What if... what if he managed to save her?"Alpha! I heard you’re looking everywhere for Althea?"Selena swept into the room. Oblivious to Kyle’s dark expression, she wrapped her arms around his and whined, "Forget about that worthless mermaid. I heard her little magic trick is gone anyway, so isn't it better that she's dead? When are you going to hold my Luna ceremony? I'm carrying your pup, you know..."Kyle stared at her cloying face, at the undisguised greed in her eyes. His men had just reported back: they'd found a specially made perfume at Selena's place. A perfume designed to make the wearer smell like another werewolf. She had sprayed it on Althea's clothes. She was the reason he had lost Althea."Get off me," Kyle bit out, the words squeezed from between his teeth.

He'd only coveted her power, treating her like a convenient tool.Besides, he had a secret he never dared to tell her—He wasn't the one who had saved her all those years ago. He’d just been passing by and found her unconscious. When Althea had asked if he was the one who saved her, on some bizarre impulse, Kyle took the credit that belonged to her true savior. He brought her back to the pack and made her his mate, even if it was in name only. I slid into a black luxury sedan, and the car pulled smoothly away from the manor.Kyle's cries grew fainter and fainter until I couldn't hear them at all.But the hatred I felt for him didn't fade. That voice stopped every snarling werewolf in their tracks.I crashed into a warm, solid chest. A scent clung to him, one that calmed me in a way I couldn't explain.I looked up to see a tall man in a silver mask. Only the lower half of his face was visible, but he radiated the commanding aura of a true leader."Who the hell are you? Daring to trespass on Black Moon territory!" Kyle growled, his brow furrowed. The man ignored him, pulling a badge from his coat—one carved with a golden wolf’s head."By order of the Alpha King, Orion, I'm here for Althea." His cold eyes swept over the unnerved werewolves. "Our King is gravely injured and requires her healing."The Alpha King!A collective gasp swept through the room. The King of all North American packs. True royalty. The ultimate leader. His was a command no one dared to defy. The color drained from Kyle’s face. The man was still holding me.Kyle forced a fawning smile. "A chance to live again!"Kyle's promise was a bomb that destroyed everyone's sanity. In an instant, they were all on his side. The family lawyer immediately scurried over to Kyle, fawning. "Alpha, since everyone supports you, there's no need to waste a precious pearl on a dying old man. I can forge the inheritance documents for you right now...""However," he continued, sizing me up like livestock, "we do need to verify this… resurrection claim."The lawyer smiled. "My pet dog just died yesterday. Why don't we have her bring my dog back first, as proof?"A dog?It was absurd.I looked at Kyle, pleading with my eyes.He would refuse, right?Even if he didn't love me, I was his mate. How could he let me perform the ritual with a dead dog?I watched him, waiting. I hoped he would at least protect the last shred of my dignity as his mate.Kyle hesitated.
