Chapter 5

Autor: Crispy Coco
"A chance to live again!"

Kyle's promise was a bomb that destroyed everyone's sanity.

In an instant, they were all on his side.

The family lawyer immediately scurried over to Kyle, fawning. "Alpha, since everyone supports you, there's no need to waste a precious pearl on a dying old man. I can forge the inheritance documents for you right now..."

"However," he continued, sizing me up like livestock, "we do need to verify this… resurrection claim."

The lawyer smiled. "My pet dog just died yesterday. Why don't we have her bring my dog back first, as proof?"

A dog?

It was absurd.

I looked at Kyle, pleading with my eyes.

He would refuse, right?

Even if he didn't love me, I was his mate. How could he let me perform the ritual with a dead dog?

I watched him, waiting. I hoped he would at least protect the last shred of my dignity as his mate.

Kyle hesitated. His gaze swept over his new, fanatical followers, then landed on me.

The moment our eyes met, I knew his answer.

Faced with such immense temptation, my dignity was worthless.

He agreed.

"Go on, Althea. This is for our future," he commanded coldly. "It's just one pearl. I'll make it up to you later."

In that moment, my heart finally died.

They shoved me toward the stiff corpse of the pet dog.

A faint smell of rot was already coming from it.

Everyone crowded around, watching me like I was some bizarre spectacle.

I looked at their greedy, crazed faces, then at Kyle, who stood by in silence.

And I started to laugh.

I laughed so hard that tears streamed down my face.

Slowly, I stood up straight, and with all the strength I had left, I announced clearly for everyone to hear:

"You're all going to be disappointed."

The crowd stirred. Kyle's face changed.

I met his disbelieving gaze, pulled up my sleeve to show him my bare arm, and revealed the truth, one word at a time.

"My nine Mermaid's Pearls are all gone. The last one was used three days ago… to save your great Alpha."

"My healing power is gone forever."

The entire estate fell into a deathly silence.

"Liar!"

"It's a scam!"

Suspicion and rage replaced their fanaticism.

Kyle stared at my arm. He knew there used to be a shimmering fishtail mark there. He had even told me once it was mysterious and beautiful.

But now, it was gone.

His face turned a furious, mottled red.

He refused to believe it. He rushed at me, grabbing my shoulders and shaking me violently.

"You're lying! You can't be out!"

His men immediately surrounded me, holding me in place.

I looked at his face, twisted with fury, and felt nothing but peace.

It was all over.

"My life is my own now," I said softly, but loud enough for everyone to hear. "I will never sacrifice it for you again."

With those words, I used my last ounce of strength to break free. With a final, desperate sob, I threw myself toward the hard stone wall of the estate.

If I couldn't escape him, death was my only freedom.

Just as I was about to hit the wall—

A pair of powerful arms suddenly wrapped around me from behind, holding me tight.

A man's voice, unfamiliar but full of power, rang out next to my ear with unquestionable authority.

"That's enough."

Warm sunlight slipped through a gap in the curtains, falling on my face.I opened my eyes to an unfamiliar but cozy room. The air was filled with the faint, fresh scent of herbs and woods."You're awake?"A gentle voice spoke. I turned my head and met those familiar golden eyes.Orion.He gently helped me sit up. "The healer said you were just exhausted." His eyes were full of undisguised tenderness.I was confused. "Why did you..."He smiled softly and finally told me the truth.I, Althea, was Orion's fated mate.Years ago, it was he who had followed the Moon Goddess's guidance to a beach where he found me being hunted by humans. He saved me. But he was so badly injured from killing the hunters that he passed out, only for Kyle to arrive moments later and take the credit. That was why Orion's eyes felt so familiar the first time I saw them. They were the eyes of my true savior, seared into my memory.Out of guilt, Kyle had hidden my identity from the world all these years. And though

(Kyle's POV)Kyle frantically sent his men to search for any trace of Althea. He hadn't eaten or slept in three days, his face covered in stubble. He clung to a sliver of hope—the man in black had jumped after her. What if... what if he managed to save her?"Alpha! I heard you’re looking everywhere for Althea?"Selena swept into the room. Oblivious to Kyle’s dark expression, she wrapped her arms around his and whined, "Forget about that worthless mermaid. I heard her little magic trick is gone anyway, so isn't it better that she's dead? When are you going to hold my Luna ceremony? I'm carrying your pup, you know..."Kyle stared at her cloying face, at the undisguised greed in her eyes. His men had just reported back: they'd found a specially made perfume at Selena's place. A perfume designed to make the wearer smell like another werewolf. She had sprayed it on Althea's clothes. She was the reason he had lost Althea."Get off me," Kyle bit out, the words squeezed from between his teeth.

(Kyle's POV)Althea left without a backward glance. Kyle collapsed to the ground, stunned, as memories of their time together flooded his mind.He used to think he didn't love her. He'd only coveted her power, treating her like a convenient tool.Besides, he had a secret he never dared to tell her—He wasn't the one who had saved her all those years ago. He’d just been passing by and found her unconscious. When Althea had asked if he was the one who saved her, on some bizarre impulse, Kyle took the credit that belonged to her true savior. He brought her back to the pack and made her his mate, even if it was in name only. Out of gratitude, Althea became fiercely loyal, giving up her Siren’s Pearl time and again to save his life. When Kyle first learned of her power, he felt like he’d struck gold. He thought it was a gift from the Moon Goddess, one that would help him become the king of all werewolves. He’d even thought about treating her right, to be worthy of her sacrifice. But her tol

I slid into a black luxury sedan, and the car pulled smoothly away from the manor.Kyle's cries grew fainter and fainter until I couldn't hear them at all.But the hatred I felt for him didn't fade. Just making him regret it wasn't enough.I thought of every time he had used me, belittled me, humiliated me. I pictured him holding Selena, kissing her right in front of me.A darker, more final plan for revenge began to take root in my mind.He cared about his power and his Black Moon pack more than anything. If I died, the mighty Alpha King Orion would surely turn his wrath on Kyle and his pack. Nothing could destroy him more completely. The car was speeding along a coastal highway. As I watched the cliffs and the ocean blur past my window, a desperate plan took shape in my head.I turned to the silent, masked man beside me."I'm sorry," I whispered. That voice stopped every snarling werewolf in their tracks.I crashed into a warm, solid chest. A scent clung to him, one that calmed me in a way I couldn't explain.I looked up to see a tall man in a silver mask. Only the lower half of his face was visible, but he radiated the commanding aura of a true leader."Who the hell are you? Daring to trespass on Black Moon territory!" Kyle growled, his brow furrowed. The man ignored him, pulling a badge from his coat—one carved with a golden wolf’s head."By order of the Alpha King, Orion, I'm here for Althea." His cold eyes swept over the unnerved werewolves. "Our King is gravely injured and requires her healing."The Alpha King!A collective gasp swept through the room. The King of all North American packs. True royalty. The ultimate leader. His was a command no one dared to defy. The color drained from Kyle’s face. The man was still holding me.Kyle forced a fawning smile.
