Chapter 3

Author: Wild Autumn
I couldn't help but feel a stinging pain in my chest after hearing Regina mention the guest room. I found it utterly ridiculous that I was relegated to the guest room upon returning to my own home.

When I didn't say anything, Regina wrapped her arms around me and asked, "Can you bear with it for just tonight, Matt?"

I clenched my jaw, fighting the urge to swear out loud. After a long pause, I looked down at her and asked, "What about you, then? Are you going to stay with me, Regina?"

The question stunned her. She had been treating Richard as a stand-in for me and had become accustomed to sharing a bed with him. My words caught her completely off guard, and she didn't know how to respond.

I immediately understood everything when I looked at her expression. I felt myself on the verge of losing control as I gritted my teeth and snarled, "Get out!"

I swung my arm and knocked over the chair behind me, causing it to topple to the floor with a resounding thud. It immediately drew everyone out from the other room to see what had happened.

Mom patted my hand and said reassuringly, "It's only for one night, Matt. I'll prepare a welcome party for you tomorrow. I'm sure everyone will be thrilled that you're finally awake."

I stared at Mom for a moment and then stopped trying to fight it, especially seeing how there was nothing more to say.

I went to the guest room by myself, only to find Richard already waiting inside. Staring coldly at him, I asked, "What are you doing here?"

I was far from being gracious enough to greet the one who replaced me with warmth.

Richard looked at me and replied with a smile, "I really hope Regina has a girl this time so that we can have a son and a daughter."

With that, he raised his hand, letting his sleeve slide down to reveal the custom Rolex watch on his wrist.

I couldn't help but widen my eyes in surprise, nearly losing my footing in the process.

That watch was the special, limited-edition piece Dad had given to me as my coming-of-age gift. It meant the world to me. He had placed it on my hand with great solemnity, telling me that it was time for me to take responsibility as a Sutherland.

Yet, at this moment, that watch was strapped to Richard's wrist.

There was no one else in the room, so Richard immediately let go of his pretense. His eyes blazed with fury as he looked at me. "Why did you have to wake up, Matthew? I have already taken your place in the Sutherland family. Why couldn't you have just died?"

He began to ramble about his efforts over the years, saying he was the son Dad had with another woman and had never felt a sense of belonging. My accident had opened the door for him to return to the Sutherland family and take my role as the heir of Sutherland Group.

I cut him off. "It was never yours to begin with. You stole my life. You're nothing but an impostor, someone who can't be shown in the open. You get that now?"

"Is that so? I guess we'll just have to find out who's more important to them now!" Richard exclaimed as he fixed me with a provocative stare.

With that, he rushed toward the stairs and threw himself down. There was a series of thumps, followed by a scream of pain that shattered the silence of the night.

Everyone came running to the scene.

I saw how their attention turned to Richard as soon as they came over, their expressions immediately shifting after seeing his injury.

"Get him to the hospital now!" Dad shouted, his face etched with worry.

He then glared at me with a look of pure hatred that I had never seen before and snapped, "Why did you have to come back and turn the whole family upside down? You'll be in for it if anything happens to Richard!"

I felt my breath catch, my chest tightening with a deep sense of hurt and indignation.

Regina shoved me aside, then helped Richard to his feet and ran toward the door, never once looking back at me.

Mom, on the other hand, lost it and slapped me hard across the face. "Richard has been so unhappy and hasn't been sleeping since you came back, Matt! Why must you always make things harder for him?"

I slumped on the floor, unable to say a word in my own defense, while Richard flashed a triumphant smile at me.

The moment everyone left, I discreetly took out the phone from my chest pocket. It had been recording our whole conversation.

There was no way I could ever forgive my family. Their betrayal was a pain that pierced me to the core.I brought nothing along, purchasing only a ticket to the south. I spent two days and one night on the journey, and when I finally arrived, my back and waist ached from the long ride.I bought a small place in the south and settled in there. I also got a new phone number using my own money so that my family would have no way to track me down.I had a young married couple and a retired elderly lady, who was living across from me, as neighbors. They helped me a great deal when I first arrived, and through our frequent coming and going, we grew quite close. Thus, once I had rested, I spent the first day cooking up a feast and invited them to join me for a meal.It was then that I saw the news broadcast on TV, though I turned away almost immediately. "If anyone has any information on Matthew Sutherland, the Sutherlands and the Livingstons will provide a handsome reward.""It's time

Lydia's expression immediately stiffened. Slowly, she let go of Richard's hand and asked gravely, "What's the meaning of this? Tell me the truth, Richard."Richard trembled uncontrollably. He then stared at Regina in disbelief, his lips turning pale. "W-What are you talking about, Regina? You only miscarried because you were so frightened after seeing Matt's accident."Regina scoffed coldly before throwing the phone into his arms. On the screen was the surveillance footage of the moment I was hit by a truck. Everyone gathered around to watch.Upon seeing me get hit by the truck and tossed into the air, Mom gasped and covered her mouth in shock, while Dad gently rubbed her shoulder, letting out a heavy sigh. They also witnessed how Richard had walked over to my side completely unscathed and saw how he simply collapsed onto the ground. Their expressions immediately turned to one of utter disbelief.Regina's expression brimmed with disgust. "If you hadn't pretended to be hurt that

"Can you help me pick up my phone? Thank you." I might have forgotten everything, but my instinct told me never to let go of my phone.Regina helped me sit up, then picked up the phone and handed it over. "You can always replace the phone if it's broken. What matters most is your health, Matt. Remember that."I shook my head, then looked down and thought for a long time before suddenly saying, "I can't lose this phone."Regina was stunned. "Huh?"I continued, "I have someone very dear to me waiting for my reply. If I take too long to respond, she'll be worried. But I can't really remember who that person is."I had forgotten about it, but Regina hadn't. We had been madly in love for four years. I was once abducted and cut off from the world. Regina nearly lost her mind then, searching everywhere for me but finding nothing.I was eventually found, but I was being held by the abductors and was forcefully pushed into a river. It was the dead of winter, but Regina didn't even hes

Richard bolstered his resolve. He needed to get some food for Regina first, planning to slip her the herbal remedy afterward. He had no idea that just before he closed the door, Regina had stepped out from around the corner, staring at his retreating figure while lost in thought."Hi, Diana, Bobby," Regina greeted Mom and Dad politely as they rushed over. They unexpectedly took out their anger on Regina as well. After taking me away from her, they never spoke to her again.Regina smiled wryly, filled with regret for what she had done in the past.At that time, I had been lying in a coma at the hospital just after having my first car accident. Richard was Dad's illegitimate son. Seeing that I was in a coma, Dad had brought him home with the intention of making him the heir of Sutherland Group.Regina, overwhelmed with grief, had tried to drown her sorrows. She had gone to a bar where no one would recognize her and happened to meet Richard, who had recently started working there.

It was only to be expected. When Regina stayed silent, Richard gritted his teeth. He took her hand and whispered, "We can have another baby together, right?"His voice was barely a whisper, and with his gaze lowered, his eyelashes were identical to mine.Regina had looked at Richard's face and thought of me countless times. Because of that, she was unable to refuse any of his requests. She was briefly caught in a daze, but she quickly came to her senses, realizing that Richard wasn't me. Pursing her lips, she remained silent under Richard's worried gaze, choosing not to respond to him.Richard didn't even have the chance to press Regina for answers when he heard Dad's joyous shout."Matt! Matt's awake!"They rushed into the ward, leaving Richard behind.Richard clenched his fists, a flicker of malice crossing his eyes.I was unaware of any of this. I simply looked at the people rambling on in front of me and furrowed my brow. "You guys should leave. I'd like to get some rest.

The doctor furrowed his brow and said, "It's highly unusual for someone of Matthew's age to suffer from retrograde amnesia. Has he been in any other accidents before?"Upon hearing that question, everyone lowered their heads in silence. Regina covered her face and replied in a strained voice, "Matt was in a coma for four years from a previous car accident."It was clear that four years was a staggering amount of time. The doctor's expression shifted, turning to one of reproach and anger. "You guys should have known that the injuries his body sustained from a four-year coma are irreversible! "You're supposed to be his family, but you didn't take care of him and let him get hit by a car again! You didn't even get him medical attention right away. How could you be so negligent!"His words were so on point that no one dared to raise their head. He was right about everything. My family had spent all these years treating Richard as if he were me. They had been trying to pay me back
