Chapter 3

Author: Peachie 11
The waiter returned soon afterward.

He looked a little panicky, but when he saw Justin's dark expression, he forced himself to calm down. "Sir, there's... No one on the terrace."

"No one?" Justin frowned deeply and asked, "Did she run off?"

"She must have," the waiter said, keeping his head down.

He did not dare mention the high heel left on the terrace or that the snow beneath the railing looked unusual.

It was better to avoid trouble. Who would want to risk spoiling the boss's celebration?

"Good riddance, I guess," Justin sighed in relief, contempt flashing in his eyes. "I knew she was just putting on an act. A minute ago, she acted as though she were going to die at any time. Then, she slipped away the moment no one was looking. That disgusting woman is full of lies."

Kelly felt much more relieved, too, and she patted her chest. "I'm glad she left. I was honestly afraid she might do something drastic."

"Something drastic?" Justin scoffed with his arm around Kelly's waist. "She values her life more than anyone. There's nothing she wouldn't do for the wealth, status, and position of my wife.

"Don't worry. She'll refuse to die even if there is no one else in this world."

It felt as though an invisible blade had just cut my heart to pieces.

Even though my heart was no longer beating, the sense of suffocation still made me want to curl into a ball.

'So, that was how you saw me? A vain woman obsessed with wealth and terrified of death?

'Justin… Have you forgotten that you were the one who begged me to marry you?

'You were the one who stood outside my home all night in the snow and swore you would treat me well for the rest of my life.'

Those promises from the past sounded like a cruel joke now.

The party continued.

A huge three-tiered cake was soon wheeled in.

Justin held Kelly's hand, and they cut the cake together.

The smell of sweet cream and frosting filled the air. It was sickeningly sweet.

I floated beside the cake and looked at the delicate sugar figures on top. They really did look just like them.

For the past six months, stomach cancer had made it almost impossible for me to eat.

I had stayed alive through IV drips.

I had almost forgotten what cake tasted like.

I reached out, wanting to scoop up a little frosting and taste it.

My fingertip passed straight through the frosting, moving only the faintest flowing of air.

I could not even have a single bite of something sweet anymore.

Disappointed, I pulled my hand back. I crouched beneath the table and hugged my transparent knees.

'It's okay.

'After all... I won't feel hungry anymore.

'It's really... Okay.'

I repeated those words to myself, but tears welled and rolled down my cheeks anyway.

Could ghosts cry too?

If they could, their tears had to be the most bitter in the world.

The bowl shattered, and the scalding consomme splashed over Kelly's feet, making her scream. "Haven't you performed enough of a show in front of me these past three years?" I questioned her as I advanced on her one step at a time, my vengefulness almost taking a physical form. "Why did Wendy collapse? Why did my mother tell the housekeeper to douse water on her that day? Kelly, do you want me to pull the footage from the security cameras and turn it over to the police?" Kelly's face went deathly pale, and her whole body trembled as she said, "Justin, I... I didn't mean to. I only..." "Leave Ashton City today and never let me see you here again," I said coldly as I looked at her as if she were beyond my attention. "Return every piece of Wendy's jewelry you took. I'll cut off one of your fingers for each missing piece." Kelly shrieked, stumbling over herself in panic as she fled. Dealing with her gave me no satisfaction whatsoever. No matter how much revenge I took on her,

[Extra Chapter — Justin's POV] The moment those specks of light vanished, I felt as though part of me died with them. The snow kept falling, and the pain on my face felt like it was cut by each flake of snow. I knelt in the snow, holding the scarf in both hands. It still carried her scent, mingled with a faint trace of medicine and her unique fresh scent. It was the only thing she had left me, and it was also the cruelest curse she could have given me. [If we meet in another life, be the one who loves me next time, okay?] No, Wendy, you lied to me. The last thing you said was that you wanted to become a bird and never meet me again. You wanted to fly away and erase every bond between us. "Not a chance..." I forced the broken words from my throat and roared into the empty park like a madman. "Wendy, I don't care if you're human, a ghost, or a bird, you're mine! You can only ever be mine!" Only the howling winds answered me. I lowered my head and stared at the uneven

One full week after my death, the snow fell even harder. Justin was holding my urn as he sat on the park bench where we had first met. Snow blanketed Justin's black hair, making it look as though his hair had gone white overnight. He sat there without moving like a statue as passersby pointed at him and called him a madman. He ignored them all as he merely lowered his head and gently brushed the snow from my urn. "Wendy, look. It's snowing. "You used to love snow more than anything. You said it could cover all the filth in the world. Now, I like snow too. Because I can almost see you in it." His voice was hoarse, filled with endless anguish. I felt my body growing lighter as it began to dissolve into countless specks of light. I knew that it was time. This time, I was truly leaving. I was finally leaving the world that had made me suffer and fall into despair, yet had also been the place where I had known both love and hate. I looked at Justin one last time. I l

"I tried to tell you. Six months ago, I came home with the report that day and filled the table with all your favorite dishes. "But… You brought Kelly home. You dumped everything I cooked into the trash and said looking at me ruined your appetite. "Three months ago, I was writhing in pain on the bed and called you, begging you to take me to the hospital. You said I was faking everything for sympathy and told me to die. "One month ago, I collapsed at home. Your mother had the housekeeper douse me with water to wake me up and said I was being lazy." Justin suddenly seemed to remember something, and he frantically scrolled through his phone's log. He found the call log from three months ago, then he found the voice message that lasted only three seconds. He played it. There came my voice, weak almost beyond recognition. "Justin... It hurts so much... Help me..." Then came his bitter reply, "You deserve to die in pain. Wendy, stop crying wolf. I'm busy. I don't have time fo

Kelly gasped and covered her mouth. "No... that can't be right! How could a menace like her die?! She must've planted a dummy to trick you! Justin, don't believe it!" Justin seemed to seize on the words as a lifeline.. He jumped to his feet and grabbed his coat before rushing for the door. "Right, it has to be fake! She has always loved putting on a show! "To think that she actually has the nerve to fake her death to trick me! I'm going to expose her! I'll make her regret ever being born!" His words were vicious, but his hands shook so badly as he put on his shoes that he could not even tie his shoelaces properly. On his way out, he even tripped and nearly fell on his face. I floated behind him and watched him stumble about in panic. Justin, what are you afraid of? Did you not hate me more than anyone? Had you not wished me dead? I had simply given you exactly what you wanted. You should be happy. So… Why were you shaking? Justin ran three red lights and sped

Late that night, the guests had all left. Justin took Kelly back to our home… No, it was their home now. The manor had once been the home I decorated a little bit at a time. The beige curtains I had chosen, the potted plants I had tended, the matching slippers I had bought… Now, everything had changed. The entryway now held a Westerland-styled rug Kelly liked, and the living room overflowed with her favorite lilies. I had never kept lilies at home before because I was allergic to their pollen. "Justin, I was so happy tonight," Kelly said as she leaned against Justin's chest and traced circles over it with her finger. "But... No one has heard from Wendy, and I'm still a little worried. I can't get through to her phone either. Do you think something has happened to her?" Justin paused while loosening his tie, then gave a cold snort. "What could possibly happen to her? A woman like that is probably hiding in some hotel, planning what to tell the press about me and how to squ
