Chapter 2

Author: Peachie 11
I was dead.

But somehow, I was not completely dead.

My soul hovered in midair as I looked down at the broken body in the corner of the garden.

The snow fell harder, soon covering the blood and burying me beneath a small white mound.

This was a secluded garden behind the hotel. With music thundering inside the banquet hall, no one had noticed that someone had just died here.

I wanted to drift down and drape a coat over myself. It was so cold… And I had always been terrified of the cold when I was alive.

Justin knew that in the past.

During the first winter after we married, the heater broke. He held me tight all night and warmed my hands and feet against his body.

But then Kelly came back, and everything changed.

...

I pulled back my translucent hand and floated toward the glamorous banquet hall. Beneath the enormous glass chandelier, the champagne tower glittered brilliantly.

Justin stood tall in a black suit, one arm around Kelly, who was wearing a custom white gown.

They really did look perfect together.

Kelly lifted her glass with a shy, sweet smile and said, "Thank you all for coming to our engagement party. It hasn't been an easy journey, and I'm grateful Justin never gave up on me."

Justin looked down at her, his eyes filled with tenderness. "I'm the one who should thank you for coming back, silly."

Thunderous applause broke out around them as everyone looked at them with envy, praising them and saying they were a match made in heaven.

No one remembered that elsewhere in this city, a woman named Wendy Sanders was still Justin's legal wife.

Oh, wait. His former wife.

Just yesterday, he had thrown the divorce papers in my face and demanded that I leave the marriage with nothing.

I had not even had a chance to sign them when he dragged me to tonight's party.

He had said, "Wendy, I want you to watch while I take back everything that's yours and give it to Kelly, one thing at a time."

He did it now.

"Huh? Justin, where's Wendy?"

Someone in the crowd suddenly asked, "Tonight is such an important occasion. Isn't she going to come offer her congratulations?"

The air froze for a moment.

The tenderness vanished from Justin's face immediately, replaced by cold impatience.

"Why bring her up?" He took a sip of champagne and said in a cold tone, "She's probably hiding somewhere crying or planning another stunt to make you all feel sorry for her.

"We should be grateful she doesn't show up and ruin the mood on a day like this."

Kelly put on a worried expression at just the right moment and gently tugged at Justin's sleeve.

"Justin, don't say that about Wendy. She… She loved you for so many years, after all. I think I saw her on the terrace earlier, but she didn't look like she was dressed warmly enough.

"Why don't we have someone bring her inside before she catches a cold?"

"A cold?" Justin chuckled coldly. "She's as tough as an ox. The last time she tried to stop me from seeing you, she jumped into the pool in the middle of winter and stayed there for an hour.

"The next day, she still showed up at the office with enough energy to kick up a storm. She's the kind of woman who will live a long life. She won't die."

I hovered in front of Justin, watching his lips form each heartless word.

I wanted to scream at him.

'Justin, I wasn't pretending.

'After I jumped into that pool, I had a fever for a week and ended up with pneumonia.

'And I'm already dead.

'This time, I'm truly dead. I won't have any energy anymore.'

But I could not make a sound.

He had never believed my explanations or my pain while I was alive. Now that I was dead, he could not hear them at all.

"We should still go check." Kelly insisted on playing the kind woman. "If something has really happened, it would bring so much bad luck to us."

To reassure Kelly, Justin frowned and reluctantly beckoned a waiter over. "Go see what that crazy woman is doing on the terrace. Tell her if she wants to die, she can do it somewhere else and stop dirtying my territory."

The waiter left to do as he was told.

As I watched the waiter leave, a flicker of hope rose in me.

Hurry.

Hurry and find me.

At least come and collect my corpse.

The bowl shattered, and the scalding consomme splashed over Kelly's feet, making her scream. "Haven't you performed enough of a show in front of me these past three years?" I questioned her as I advanced on her one step at a time, my vengefulness almost taking a physical form. "Why did Wendy collapse? Why did my mother tell the housekeeper to douse water on her that day? Kelly, do you want me to pull the footage from the security cameras and turn it over to the police?" Kelly's face went deathly pale, and her whole body trembled as she said, "Justin, I... I didn't mean to. I only..." "Leave Ashton City today and never let me see you here again," I said coldly as I looked at her as if she were beyond my attention. "Return every piece of Wendy's jewelry you took. I'll cut off one of your fingers for each missing piece." Kelly shrieked, stumbling over herself in panic as she fled. Dealing with her gave me no satisfaction whatsoever. No matter how much revenge I took on her,

[Extra Chapter — Justin's POV] The moment those specks of light vanished, I felt as though part of me died with them. The snow kept falling, and the pain on my face felt like it was cut by each flake of snow. I knelt in the snow, holding the scarf in both hands. It still carried her scent, mingled with a faint trace of medicine and her unique fresh scent. It was the only thing she had left me, and it was also the cruelest curse she could have given me. [If we meet in another life, be the one who loves me next time, okay?] No, Wendy, you lied to me. The last thing you said was that you wanted to become a bird and never meet me again. You wanted to fly away and erase every bond between us. "Not a chance..." I forced the broken words from my throat and roared into the empty park like a madman. "Wendy, I don't care if you're human, a ghost, or a bird, you're mine! You can only ever be mine!" Only the howling winds answered me. I lowered my head and stared at the uneven

One full week after my death, the snow fell even harder. Justin was holding my urn as he sat on the park bench where we had first met. Snow blanketed Justin's black hair, making it look as though his hair had gone white overnight. He sat there without moving like a statue as passersby pointed at him and called him a madman. He ignored them all as he merely lowered his head and gently brushed the snow from my urn. "Wendy, look. It's snowing. "You used to love snow more than anything. You said it could cover all the filth in the world. Now, I like snow too. Because I can almost see you in it." His voice was hoarse, filled with endless anguish. I felt my body growing lighter as it began to dissolve into countless specks of light. I knew that it was time. This time, I was truly leaving. I was finally leaving the world that had made me suffer and fall into despair, yet had also been the place where I had known both love and hate. I looked at Justin one last time. I l

"I tried to tell you. Six months ago, I came home with the report that day and filled the table with all your favorite dishes. "But… You brought Kelly home. You dumped everything I cooked into the trash and said looking at me ruined your appetite. "Three months ago, I was writhing in pain on the bed and called you, begging you to take me to the hospital. You said I was faking everything for sympathy and told me to die. "One month ago, I collapsed at home. Your mother had the housekeeper douse me with water to wake me up and said I was being lazy." Justin suddenly seemed to remember something, and he frantically scrolled through his phone's log. He found the call log from three months ago, then he found the voice message that lasted only three seconds. He played it. There came my voice, weak almost beyond recognition. "Justin... It hurts so much... Help me..." Then came his bitter reply, "You deserve to die in pain. Wendy, stop crying wolf. I'm busy. I don't have time fo

Kelly gasped and covered her mouth. "No... that can't be right! How could a menace like her die?! She must've planted a dummy to trick you! Justin, don't believe it!" Justin seemed to seize on the words as a lifeline.. He jumped to his feet and grabbed his coat before rushing for the door. "Right, it has to be fake! She has always loved putting on a show! "To think that she actually has the nerve to fake her death to trick me! I'm going to expose her! I'll make her regret ever being born!" His words were vicious, but his hands shook so badly as he put on his shoes that he could not even tie his shoelaces properly. On his way out, he even tripped and nearly fell on his face. I floated behind him and watched him stumble about in panic. Justin, what are you afraid of? Did you not hate me more than anyone? Had you not wished me dead? I had simply given you exactly what you wanted. You should be happy. So… Why were you shaking? Justin ran three red lights and sped

Late that night, the guests had all left. Justin took Kelly back to our home… No, it was their home now. The manor had once been the home I decorated a little bit at a time. The beige curtains I had chosen, the potted plants I had tended, the matching slippers I had bought… Now, everything had changed. The entryway now held a Westerland-styled rug Kelly liked, and the living room overflowed with her favorite lilies. I had never kept lilies at home before because I was allergic to their pollen. "Justin, I was so happy tonight," Kelly said as she leaned against Justin's chest and traced circles over it with her finger. "But... No one has heard from Wendy, and I'm still a little worried. I can't get through to her phone either. Do you think something has happened to her?" Justin paused while loosening his tie, then gave a cold snort. "What could possibly happen to her? A woman like that is probably hiding in some hotel, planning what to tell the press about me and how to squ
