Chapter 2

Author: Bye Chubs
“Do you still blame me, Linette? I really didn’t know the miscarriage would hurt you that much.

“But since you’re back, Rowan and I will make it up to you.

“Once you’re pregnant with me and Rowan’s child, I’ll give you a room at home. It’ll be like a nanny room. After you give birth, it’ll be easier for you to take care of our baby.

“But before IVF, you should really get a full check-up. After all, life overseas is kind of messy. We don’t even know what you’ve been doing these past five years that made you want to hide from everyone…”

It had been five years, yet she was still as disgustingly petty as ever.

When I frowned, Rowan took it as jealousy. His brows slightly lifted, and satisfaction crept into his tone.

“Tara’s right. Having a baby is a big deal.

“How about this, Linette? I’ll take you for a full physical tomorrow, maybe even a genetic screening.

“If everything checks out, I’ll book a doctor right away. Oh, and you probably don’t have money, right? I’ll give you $200 first. Think of it as a deposit.”

He pulled out his wallet and flicked out two crisp, blue bills.

“Here. Consider it a deposit.”

The people around him could not hold it in and burst out laughing.

“Linette, it’s been five years. How did you get even cheaper?”

“Rowan, why even give her $200? Toss her two dimes, and she’ll be grateful.”

“What are you standing there for? Say thank you already.”

The familiar scene dragged me back to an old memory.

It was three in the morning. I had run from the north of the city to the south just to bring them roasted chestnuts.

They were just like this too, laughing as they pulled out a couple of crumpled bills and tossed them onto the ground.

Then, they would put on fake smiles and say, “Thanks, Linette.”

Tara smoothed her hair and pretended to let out a sigh.

“Looks like life’s been really hard on you, Linette. Don’t worry. I’m not petty.

“Once you give birth to mine and Rowan’s baby, I’ll give you a big payment. I won’t mistreat you.”

Rowan’s gaze softened as though he was moved by her words.

“Tara, you’re still so kind.

“Unlike her! She had a miscarriage, but it’s not like she can’t have kids. She actually threw a tantrum and went abroad for five years. She’s just as petty as her mother.”

My heartbeat stalled for a second when I heard that.

My mother was the family’s original wife, but my father cheated while she was pregnant. Tara was the result of that affair.

After my mother died, barely a week passed before Tara’s mother moved in.

Then, my wedding was called off, and I lost my child.

When I was in the hospital, Rowan never once showed up.

That was when I realized that he was rotten.

The boy who once fought for me, teeth clenched in pain just to stop me from crying…

The boy who defied his family and walked every street with me…

The boy who knelt in front of my mother’s grave and swore he would love me forever…

Somewhere along the way, he disappeared.

I came back to my senses, shaking my head. The past suddenly felt like it belonged to someone else.

After all, I was already married.

My second child was about to turn one month old.

My gaze settled back into something calm. I looked straight at Rowan and got right to the point.

“I’m the person you’re all waiting for. You can leave now.”

The crowd went quiet for a moment.

Then, everyone looked at each other and burst out laughing.

Tara even laughed until she had tears in her eyes, then shoved the bouquet she had prepared to welcome ‘Aunt’ right into my face.

“Linette, it’s been five years, yet you haven’t changed at all. Where do you get that confidence from?

“We’re welcoming Rowan’s aunt-in-law, the future lady of the Shaw family.

“Not you, a piece of trash who can’t even keep a child.”

Her last sentence was spoken so softly that no one could hear them except me.

“You’re only ever going to be my wife in this lifetime. Even if you want to leave me, you can forget it! It’s not happening. I’d rather die than let you go.”As I listened to Logan’s domineering confession, a warm current quietly spread through my chest.Even though his words sounded fierce, I could still sense the faint unease underneath them.I really could not resist him being so arrogant yet so insecure.Feeling secretly pleased, I still kept a straight face, barely holding back my smile. He hesitated when he noticed I did not respond.“Are you upset because I hit Rowan today?”He spoke hesitantly, as though a single nod from me would make him fall apart in the next second.I spent a moment trying to understand how he could come up with such an absurd idea, but he took my silence as confirmation.By the time I finally figured it out, he had already lowered his head. His voice was dark and hoarse.“Got it. I’ll be more careful next time.”I reached out and scratched his p

“I never intended to break up with you. I was even planning to hold our wedding again. Please come back to me, okay?”Rowan looked haggard. The light in his eyes was gone. His clothes were filthy, and he looked utterly disheveled. If it were before, seeing him like this would have broken my heart. Now, I only felt disgust.I shoved him away and kept my distance.“Rowan, stop being disgusting. The moment you cheated, our ending was already decided.“What you’re doing now is nothing more than fear. You’re scared that Logan will actually kill you for my sake.“Love that comes too late is worthless. The moment you caused my miscarriage, whatever we had between us died.“Even if Tara never existed, even if we really did get married, you’d still end up with another woman. We would’ve still ended in divorce. No matter how you dress it up, your character is already set.“You’re selfish and hypocritical. You’re a man who can’t control himself.”Rowan was rendered speechless. After a lo

Helen laughed like a madwoman.“Logan, what’s the point of protecting this woman? You don’t even know if the children she gave birth to are yours!“Back then, I had the doctors damage her uterus after her miscarriage. A daughter no one cared about, yet she still dared to get pregnant out of wedlock and dream of marrying into our family!“Ridiculous!”My eyes widened in shock. When I was pregnant with Evan, I had to rely on daily injections just to keep him alive. My second pregnancy with Aria was even more dangerous. I nearly miscarried several times.I always thought it was damage from the car accident. I had resented Rowan for years because of it.I never imagined I had more than one enemy.…Helen was sent to a psychiatric facility filled with patients suffering from bipolar disorder and other severe mental illnesses.I heard from the staff that the suggestion to leave her here actually came from Evan.It was hard to stay mad upon seeing his smiling face.Duncan understo

“Mommy, you’re finally awake! Aria and I were so worried about you!”I gently ruffled my son’s hair and looked toward the crib.My daughter Aria was sleeping soundly, though even in her sleep, she looked a little unhappy. Her lips were faintly pursed.“Don’t worry. I’m okay.“You did great, Evan. You took good care of Aria for me.”Evan’s eyes turned red again. He mumbled unhappily, “If it wasn’t for that crazy guy outside yelling and screaming, I could’ve taken even better care of her.”I frowned slightly and turned to look at Logan.“Crazy guy? What crazy guy?”He adjusted the bed for me and placed a pillow behind my back, answering casually, “Rowan.”I lowered my eyes and frowned with displeasure.Rowan had done that much to me, yet Logan had only made him kneel? Before I could think further, the hospital director knocked on the door. Through the crack, I saw Rowan’s face. His cheeks were swollen, his face was covered in injuries, and one eye was so swollen it had turned

Rowan instinctively pulled me behind him. When he met Logan’s murderous gaze, he jolted up and forced himself to speak.“Uncle, this woman’s gone insane. She’s talking nonsense. I’ll have someone drag her out right away. Don’t let her dirty your eyes!”Tara shot me a disdainful glance and jumped in, eager to take credit.“This woman’s outrageous. She tried to seduce Rowan and failed, so now, she’s pretending to be his aunt. We’ve already taught her a lesson. She’s finally learned her place!”Logan’s eyes locked onto the watch in her hand—the one stained with blood.“Where did you get that watch?”Tara toyed with the shattered dial and lifted her chin.“It’s hers. I’m not sure if she bought it or stole it, but it looks even more real than the one I’m wearing.”The onlookers chimed in quietly,“Yeah, she’s obviously scheming. She’s just trying to use this chance to cling to the Shaw family.”“But everyone knows Mr. Logan only has eyes for his wife. He spoils her like she’s a tr

Two months later, I married Logan. Now, I was barely out of postpartum recovery for my second child.Coming back to the country, I really did not want anything more to do with my old ‘friends’.I frowned slightly, hoping Rowan would not stir up any more trouble. Otherwise my husband, who was the jealous type, would definitely not let it slide.…The next day, I went to the hospital alone for a check-up because of the injury on my face.Rowan’s eyes lit up the moment he saw me.“Didn’t you say you weren’t coming? What, still can’t let me go?”He rushed over in a few quick steps, glancing at my bare face as satisfaction rose in his eyes.“No makeup for the pregnancy prep? Looks like you actually listened to me.”I did not respond and walked straight to the department where I had booked an appointment.Rowan frowned and grabbed my arm.“IVF is this way. Where are you going?”I shook him off and waved at the hospital director who was walking toward me.“The person picking me
