Liam’s POV

The turbine engine roars above my head, a deep, vibration-heavy thrum that shakes the leather seats of the Eurocopter.

Outside the cabin glass, rain streaks sideways across the grey sky, blurring the French countryside into a wash of dark green and charcoal. The storm is heavy, the air turbulence tossing the aircraft every few miles, but I do not feel the motion.

I feel the man sitting four feet away from me.

Julian Beaumont sits in the opposite captain's chair, his head resting back

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER EIGHTY TWO: The Sanctuary

Emma’s POVJulian’s fingers stay against my cheek for one beat longer than they should. His skin is hot, slightly rough, smelling of rain and the heavy wool of his coat. I do not flinch, but I take one slow step backward, letting his thumb slide off my skin. The loss of his touch leaves a cool line across my cheek, but I need the space. I need the air between us.Across the grand foyer, Liam does not move.He stands near the heavy oak front door, his hands shoved deep into his damp coat pockets. His white shirt clings to his chest, his dark hair messy, his grey eyes burning into mine with an intensity that makes my blood run hot under my skin.He saw Julian touch me. He saw me let him."You should get out of those wet clothes, Liam," Eleanor’s voice says from the dining room archway. She stands there holding a linen napkin, her face pale, her silver hair soft around her temples. She looks at her son standing in the shadows of another man's entryway, and her throat moves in a hard, pai

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER EIGHTY ONE: The Weight Of A Fire

Emma’s POVThe line goes dead. The quiet tone of the disconnected call fades, replaced by the warm, domestic sounds of the 16th arrondissement apartment. In the adjacent drawing room, Ace’s loud laughter echoes off the high carved ceiling as he shows Adèle his dinosaur watch, while the faint clinking of tea cups comes from the side table where Eleanor sits.We left Philippe’s bakery after the brief phone call where Julian told me about Arthur chartering the helicopter to Lyon. I brought everyone straight home where it feels safer, while Liam and Julian took the flight south to protect my looms. And now, it is done.I lower the phone to my lap, my fingers cold against the glass.Liam did it. He stood in a rain-soaked factory courtyard, backed his own father into a corner, and made Arthur keep his hands off my company.I look down at my hands. They are steady, but my chest feels so heavy I can barely draw air into my lungs.Eleanor watches me from the velvet armchair across the room. He

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER EIGHTY: The Loom Gates

Liam’s POVThe rotor wash from the Eurocopter blasts cold rain across the concrete pad, spraying water into my eyes as my boots hit the ground. The sound of the looms inside the Beaumont mills is a heavy, rhythmic thudding that vibrates through the soles of my shoes. Row after row of brick buildings stretch out into the grey Lyon afternoon, their chimneys rising into the storm.Beyond the landing pad, near the main iron gates, three massive flatbed transport trucks remain parked in an impenetrable wall. Dozens of factory workers in dark blue coveralls stand shoulder to shoulder behind the iron bars, their arms crossed, their faces grim under the pouring rain.Outside the gate, the black sedans have pulled up and sit idling. My father steps out from the rear of the lead vehicle. He wears his double-breasted charcoal coat, an umbrella held over his head by an associate. His silver hair is dry, his leather gloves immaculate, his face holding the placid, unbothered expression of a man who

The storm is heavy, the air turbulence tossing the aircraft every few miles, but I do not feel the motion.I feel the man sitting four feet away from me.Julian Beaumont sits in the opposite captain's chair, his head resting back against the leather, a noise-canceling headset over his dark hair. He wears his dark wool coat, his hands folded loosely over his stomach, his posture calm and unhurried. He looks like a man taking a routine commuter flight, not a man flying into a hurricane to stop my father from liquidating his family's legacy.I hate him.I hate the steady, unyielding way he occupies space. I hate that he didn't panic when Arthur dropped forty-two million euros of debt on his father's desk. I hate that he kno

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER SEVENTY EIGHT: What Remained In California

Emma’s POVThe glass door of Philippe’s bakery closes with a heavy, metallic click.Through the rain-streaked window, I watch two tall figures cross the wet pavement of Rue Cler. Liam walks with his head bowed against the wind, his dark coat soaked, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. Julian walks half a pace beside him, his posture rigid, his eyes scanning the street for any sign of Arthur’s men.Two men who despise each other, stepping into the same car to go to war for my children.Henri pulls the black sedan away from the curb, its red taillights cutting through the grey Paris mist. I stand by the window for a long moment, my hand pressed against the cool glass, watching the empty street until my breath fogs the pane.I turn back to the table. The café is quiet now. The morning rush has passed, leaving behind the rich, warm scent of toasted butter and dark espresso. Ace is sitting on the wooden bench, pressing the small brass catch of his pocket watch over and over. Every time

Liam’s POVMy hand stays against my cheek. Her small finger was warm, smelling of sugar and butter. The dampness of my tear is still on my skin, drying in the warm air of the bakery, and it feels like a brand.I stand up slowly. My knees ache from the hard tile floor, my damp white shirt cold against my back, but inside my chest, everything is on fire.Across the room, Willa climbs back onto the wooden bench. She picks up her silver fork, completely unbothered, and finally takes a tiny bite of her cake. Ace is still shouting about the jam inside his slice. Grey is quietly examining his new compass, turning the silver casing in his hands to watch the needle float. My children.Three small people who carry my eyes, wearing silver crowns on their birthday, eating cake in a bakery while another man holds their mother’s hand under the table.I see it. I know Julian’s hand is under that white tablecloth. I see the angle of
