Chapter 3

Author: Fish Cares
In the end, the wedding was still cancelled.

In order to salvage their dignity, both the York and Xander families announced that they would choose another date for the wedding. In order to resolve the rumor about me not being on good terms with Stanley, they wanted me to be the host for Stanley’s and Louise’s wedding.

Once we arrived back home, my parents immediately started yelling at me.

“You have to host the wedding, Nathan!” My father slammed his newspaper on the table. The headline on the paper was full of mockery. Right now, everyone is saying that we’re mistreating you and forcing you to turn against us because we keep siding with Stanley. You have to come forward and clear things up!”

I stared at him coldly. “Why should I lie against my conscience for your dignity’s sake?”

“You rascal!” My father was so angry that he started trembling.

Stanley immediately teared up and said sadly, “Are you still blaming me for stealing Louise, Nathan? I know that you still love her. That’s why you don’t want to see us being happy with each other, right?”

Without even waiting for me to say anything, he immediately ran to the railing on the balcony and turned around with tears falling down his face.

“I know that I’m the useless one here. I’m the thief who stole Nathan’s life. Will everything return to its original place if I die? I’m sorry, Nathan…”

Then, he made it seem like he was going to jump down the balcony.

In the next second, Louise rushed over and dragged Nathan off the balcony before hugging him tightly. Her voice was full of unprecedented panic and fear. “Don’t be stupid, Stanley! How could you be useless? You did nothing wrong!”

After she comforted Stanley, she glared at me with bloodshot eyes. “When will you stop with this, Nathan?! Stanley is kind. He never fights for anything and just wants to live properly! He’s not like you! You’re always so angry and won’t stop until you hurt everyone around you!”

My parents hurried over to stand beside Stanley to comfort him with great pity in their hearts.

“Don’t stay here tonight, Nathan. Go out and calm down. Don’t make Stanley upset again when he sees you.”

I watched this loving family coldly and said nothing. Instead, I just walked out of my supposed ‘family.’ When I was out on the deserted street, I took out my phone from my pocket. On the screen was a message I received a few hours ago.

[Have you thought things through, Nathan? Professor Lane and all of us look forward to your return.]

I sucked in a deep breath and typed one word on the screen. [Sure.]

The very next second, I received a phone call.

A familiar and delighted voice came through. “That’s great news! Nathan, you finally said yes! Professor Lane will be delighted once she hears about this! But you know that we need to be isolated from the world to carry out our experiment, and there’s no set time limit for this. Will your parents and fiancee agree to it?”

“You… You rascal!” Mr. Xander was furious and wanted to slap Stanley, but suddenly, Stanley started cackling like a mad man. He shoved Louise away and stood up as he stared at his adopted parents resentfully. “I’m a rascal? You finally acknowledge that I’m a rascal?” He laughed so hard that he started crying. “Who’s the one who told me that as long as I behave, I will always be the heir of the Xander family? Who’s the one who allowed and supported me when I was talking bad about Nathan? Do you think you’re innocent? You looked down on Nathan for being a country bumpkin and thought that you couldn’t show him off in public events. That’s why you treated me as the perfect replacement!”He pointed at them and started yelling hysterically, “You don’t love me or Nathan! You only love yourselves and the Xander family’s dignity!”Those words stripped the last shred of dignity from Mr. and Mrs. Xander. Exasperated, Mr. Xander pointed at the gate. “G-Get lost! From now on, you’re no longer

In her anguish, Louise shut her eyes, as if she wanted to lock those beautiful memories in her mind and not let them slip away. “I’m a piece of trash and a coward! I let myself be bound by favors and responsibility and fell for Stanley’s lies. I pushed you away with my own two hands and hurt you. But I love you, Nathan! I’ve always only loved you!”She opened her eyes and looked at me with passionate, obsessive eyes, as if she wanted to find a trace of me being moved by her words. “Life is hard here, isn’t it? You’ve become so thin. How could you still stay here? I won’t let you! Come back with me, and we’ll get married. I’ll make it up to you and be good to you for the rest of our lives. We can make up for our regrets from the two lifetimes!”Just as she was about to touch me, I took a step back and avoided her. Then, I shook my head gently and smiled with endless sorrow but also liberation. “You’re wrong, Louise. The girl that I loved is the one who stood up for me when I was

“Nathan, I…” Louise wanted to take a step forward, only for my companion to stop her. He was Ajax, one of my best friends here, and he was a hot-tempered person. For a long time, he had found Louise an eyesore. “You’re Louise York?” Ajax sized her up with hostility in his eyes. “Nathan suffered because of you, and you still have the gall to show your face here? You’re just asking for a beating, huh?!”He swung his fist at her.“Ajax, don’t.” I stopped him. I did not want people and things unrelated to me to interfere with my peaceful life. Despite not wanting to, Ajax still pulled his fist back. But he continued glaring at Louise fiercely. Along with a few more of my friends, they shielded me behind them and formed a sturdy human wall. When Louise saw this, she felt as if a knife had stabbed her heart. Many years ago, she was the one who shielded me behind her back. But I already had new guardians. “Nathan, can we talk? Just for a few minutes.” She was almost pleading at

Louise shoved away the crying Stanley and ran out of the wedding venue without a care for anything else. Behind her were Stanley’s despair-filled cries and a farce that had ended up as a complete joke. Like a madwoman, Louise ran out with only one thought in her mind. Finding Nathan. She made use of all the York family’s connections and resources to expand her search to the entire world. That search formed an impenetrable net that would allow no one to escape. However, a day went by, then two days, then a whole week. The news remained the same. They could not find Nathan. It was as if he had disappeared from the world. There was no record of him entering or exiting any flight, railway, or harbor. His bank cards showed no signs of any transactions made, and his social media accounts were never updated. He had taken away all his assets before disappearing without a trace. Louise became thinner. Her eyes sunk in and became bloodshot. She shut herself up in her room and kept

The assistant’s voice grew softer, and there was even a trace of fear in her voice. “We used all of our connections to check the records of him leaving and to locate him… but we couldn’t find anything.”Louise felt like someone had struck her with a hammer. She stood stunned, and her phone fell to the floor. The screen cracked. While she was disoriented, the guests started talking among themselves about the sudden turn of events. Just then, the LED screen at the center of the wedding venue fizzled out of the blue. It had been showing the newly wed couple’s sweet wedding photos on repeat, but at that moment, it changed to the blurry security footage of a school. In the video, a thin boy was surrounded by a few other boys in a toilet. They were all wearing the same school uniform. They shoved at him, emptied his bag, tore up his homework, and slapped him. The one leading the entire group of bullies was Stanley, the man currently wearing the suit on the stage and looking all inno

During the three years I disappeared, I befriended a group of people in a secret research base located abroad. They were the ones who had rescued me from the ocean and treated my wounds. It was also while I was there that I rekindled my passion for neuroscience research, which I had abandoned for Louise and my parents. In the previous life, in order to run after Louise’s affection, I gave up on their repeated invitation to join them and stubbornly left. In the end, I died a tragic death. This time, I was not going to make the same mistake. “I have no family. I can make my own decisions,” I said calmly into the phone. The other side remained silent for a while before laughing kindly. “How could you not have any family? We’re your family! Nathan, we’ll always welcome you back home!”I held my phone tightly and stood in the cold breeze of the night as I laughed from the bottom of my heart. I was set to leave the next day. Coincidentally, that was the day Stanley and Louise were
