Chapter 3

Autor: September Almond
Inside the studio, Jonathan was giving an interview.

The reporter held up a microphone, his voice tinged with admiration. "Mr. Nash, you and Ms. Lloyd are truly the ultimate power couple in the boxing world."

Amber looked polished and poised. Her arm looped through Jonathan's as she leaned against him.

"I've heard that Ms. Lloyd played a huge role behind the scenes in helping you win back the world championship."

Amber giggled softly. "Those years after Jonathan became paralyzed were incredibly difficult. But as long as we faced everything together as husband and wife, there was nothing we couldn't get through."

She put extra emphasis on the words "husband and wife".

I gripped the gear case tighter until its sharp edges dug into my palms.

Just then, a sharp-eyed reporter in the front row suddenly pointed toward the backstage area.

"Wait a second. Isn't that the woman who stood up at the celebration party?"

Every camera in the room swung toward me.

The reporter immediately sensed a story and thrust the microphone toward Jonathan.

"Mr. Nash, what exactly is your relationship with that woman? There have been rumors that she was the one who stayed by your side during your darkest days and even helped with your rehabilitation. Is that true?"

The room fell silent.

Everyone's eyes moved between Jonathan and me.

I stared up at him. Those few seconds felt like an eternity.

A pathetic part of me still hoped that even if he wouldn't admit I was his partner, he'd at least say I was the one who had pulled him through the hardest years of his life.

Jonathan looked at me, a flicker of hesitation crossing his eyes.

Then, he slowly raised the microphone. "Yvette was the housekeeper who took care of me all these years."

His voice rang clearly through the speakers, "She worked hard and always did her job well."

He turned to Amber, and his expression softened with affection. "But as my wife, Amber is the most important person in my life, and I could never have done this without her. She's the reason I was able to make my comeback."

Thunderous applause and cheers erupted from the crowd.

I stood frozen, clutching the box as my fingers slowly turned cold. A dull ache spread through my chest.

A housekeeper.

So, all the sacrifices I had made meant nothing to him. I had sold my home to pay for his surgery and stayed up night after night caring for him through eight years. Yet to him, I was nothing more than a housekeeper doing my job.

The moment the interview ended, the crowd outside descended into chaos. Someone had already posted photos of me working as a hotel housekeeper online.

Frenzied boxing fans immediately blocked me at the exit, hurling insults at me.

"So she's just a housekeeper? And she thought she could use our champ to get ahead?"

"What a shameless woman! Jonathan has a wife. Who the hell do you think you are?"

"Having someone like her around Jonathan just ruins his reputation!"

Vicious curses rained down on me.

Suddenly, someone slammed hard into my shoulder, knocking the gear case from my hands. Boxing gloves, mouthguards, and protective gear spilled onto the floor.

I crouched down to pick them up, but someone shoved me hard from behind.

I lost my balance and tumbled down the steps. Blood seeped from my scraped elbow, and sharp pain shot through my ankle. I gasped, unable to get up.

Laughter broke out among the crowd.

Jonathan noticed the commotion and started toward me, but Amber grabbed his arm. "Jonathan, the reporters are waiting for us to take pictures, and the sponsors are watching."

The panic in Jonathan's eyes disappeared.

"Security," he called flatly, turning away. "Get the crowd under control. Don't let anyone disrupt the event."

Back when Jonathan couldn't walk, if I was ten minutes late coming back from the grocery store, he'd break into a cold sweat from anxiety. He would drag himself to the front door, terrified that I had abandoned him.

Now his legs were healed, yet he watched me fall and simply walked away.

"Ma'am, you need to leave right now," a security guard ordered, shoving me toward the exit.

Jonathan had lost a lot of weight and looked completely worn down.He stood outside the school gates in the biting cold, staring straight at me from across the street. His eyes slowly reddened.Just then, Daniel Warren came out of the school. He was the director of the adaptive sports academy and the one who had posted my bail.We had known each other for years.Back when Jonathan was paralyzed, I had reached out to Daniel to get his opinion on Jonathan's case. After that, I regularly sent him my progress journals and training plans. When the news about the celebration party broke online, he was the one who reached out to me.Daniel took hold of Alexia's wheelchair and then took my heavy canvas bag of rehab notes from me.He didn't ask who the broken man standing across the street was. He simply stood beside me, keeping a respectful distance.Jonathan's gaze fell on Daniel's hand holding my bag, and his face turned pale. He walked up to me and held out the deed with my name on

Amber refused to give my family home back and doubled down with outrageous demands. She wanted half of everything Jonathan had earned over the years, including his prize money, endorsement deals, and real estate."I helped you rebuild your career, took care of everything behind the scenes, and did everything a wife was supposed to do."You gave me that house for my birthday and bought me the other properties and cars willingly. Why should I give any of them back? I deserve to be compensated for everything I've done."Amber's tone was utterly self-righteous.For the first time, Jonathan refused to back down. "That money and those assets were meant for Yvette from the beginning."His voice was cold. "They're what I owe her for the eight years she sacrificed for me. Don't you dare touch a single cent."His words completely set Amber off. She dropped all pretense."Who are you trying to fool with this devotion act now?" She sneered."You're the one who hurt Yvette the most, not me

The next day, I got an international call from Kate Chapman, a former coworker back home."Yvette, you won't believe this," she whispered, her voice tight with shock. "Jonathan pulled every string he had to investigate Amber. And he found out everything that happened to you before wasn't a coincidence at all."I held the phone, looking out at the sunlit sky over the unfamiliar city."Really?" I replied calmly. "He's probably regretting it now."Kate sighed. "Regretting it? That's an understatement. His hands were shaking when he got the evidence."According to her, my former landlord had handed over bank transfer records showing Amber had paid him to evict me, along with screenshots of messages from Amber's assistant. The nurse at the hospital had eventually cracked under pressure and confessed everything. On top of that, Amber had pretended to be a member of Jonathan's team and spread rumors that I was a mentally unstable stalker. She was the one who'd ordered security to drag m

The plane landed, and I stepped into the chilly air of an unfamiliar city.Ms. Phoebe Miller, the coordinator from the adaptive sports academy, was already waiting at the airport. She didn't ask about my injured arm or say anything about the rumors that had been blowing up online. Instead, she simply took my suitcase and gave me a warm smile."Coach Sloan, the kids have been waiting for you."The school overseas had covered my bail, and their lawyer had escorted me all the way to the airport.I was taken straight to the classroom, where more than a dozen children in wheelchairs or braces were already waiting.Alexia Curtis, who sat in the front row, had a congenital spinal condition that left her unable to stand. She couldn't engage her core properly. After missing the training mitts several times in a row, she threw off her gloves in frustration."What's the point of learning any of this if I can't even stand in a real ring?" Her voice cracked with despair. "We're not even norm

Limping into the exhibition match's partner hospital with my swollen ankle, I handed over my ID at the front desk. The nurse typed a few things into the computer, and her expression instantly hardened. She shoved my ID back and said coldly, "Sorry, Ms. Sloan. We can't treat you here."I froze. Blood from my elbow had already soaked through half my sleeve. The nurse stared at me without expression and pressed the call button on her desk. Within seconds, two security guards grabbed me by the arms and dragged me out of the emergency room.I sat down beside a flower bed, my hands shaking as I pulled out my phone and called Jonathan. It rang for a long time before someone finally answered."Hello?"But it was Amber. She had put me on speaker, and I could hear reporters talking in the background."Yvette, you know I'm Jonathan's wife. Why do you keep calling him and harassing him?" She deliberately raised her voice so everyone nearby could hear.My knuckles turned white as I gripped
