Chapter 2

Autor: September Almond
Amber Lloyd was standing in the entryway wearing silk loungewear and slippers.

When she saw me, she didn't look surprised in the slightest. Instead, she gave me a perfectly composed smile. "Yvette, you're here."

She held up a booklet and asked, "Can you help me decide? Which color do you think would work better in the living room, champagne or slate blue?"

I stood frozen, staring at her silk loungewear. She looked every bit like the lady of the house.

I looked at Jonathan, but he avoided my gaze. "Champagne. It'll make the room brighter."

Over in the corner of the yard wall was a column of height marks my grandfather had carved for me year by year.

"This wall is awful. It even smells like mold," Amber complained, pinching her nose in disgust. "I've already hired a crew to repaint the whole house tomorrow."

She then pointed at the old rattan chair my grandfather had left behind. "And that junk chair goes out with the trash, too."

I stared at the chair, my nails digging into my palms.

Back when Jonathan had become paralyzed, he had been so angry and frustrated that he smashed everything in the house. I was the one who sat him down in that chair and told him again and again that his legs would recover.

Now that he could walk again, the chair was nothing but trash to him.

"Jonathan." I turned to him, my voice hoarse. "Why is she here?"

He stepped closer and reached for my hand, but I pulled away.

He sighed helplessly and lowered his voice. "Yvette, I did buy the place back. But for now, the deed is in Amber's name."

I looked up sharply, staring at him in shock.

"We're legally married, so keeping it in her name as marital property saves us a lot of tax trouble. Once I get back from my match next month, I'll have her transfer the house back to you," Jonathan said, trying to reassure me.

My voice trembled despite my efforts to control it. "This is the only thing I ever wanted back. You're worth tens of millions of dollars now. Are you really worried about paying a little extra in taxes?"

Jonathan frowned, wiping away my tears. "I'm under a lot of pressure, Yvette. Besides, whose name is on the deed isn't that important. You can move in whenever you want. Amber usually stays downtown, so she won't be here often."

Amber leaned against the doorframe and gave a soft laugh. "That's right, Yvette. I'm planning to turn the south-facing bedroom upstairs into Jonathan's trophy room. We'll build a floor-to-ceiling display case just for his championship belts and gloves."

Standing in what had once been my family's yard, I listened to them plan their future together. I felt like a stranger who had only been allowed inside to look around.

On the drive home, Jonathan fastened my seat belt for me and made a detour to buy my favorite roasted chestnuts.

He peeled one and held it to my lips. "Don't be mad. Once I get back from my match, everything will be back to normal. I'll make your favorite baked salmon tonight."

While he was cooking, his phone buzzed on the nightstand.

It was a message from a real estate agent. "Mr. Nash, all the closing paperwork for your wife has been finalized."

I unlocked his phone on impulse. His passcode was still my birthday.

I opened the confirmation slip, and the closing was dated September 16, three months ago.

It was Amber's birthday.

Jonathan brought the food to the table, and his phone rang again. It was Amber.

After listening for a moment, he glanced at me awkwardly and grabbed his jacket.

"Amber twisted her wrist. I'm going to check on her. She can't miss tonight's rehab demonstration and interview. Just bring my custom gloves, mouthguard, and the rest of the gear to the studio later."

I sat alone at the table. The person who loved fish wasn't me.

As the smell of fish hit my nose, I couldn't hold it in any longer. I ran to the bathroom and threw up until I could barely breathe.

"Yvette, the school is planning to launch a program combining adaptive boxing and neurological rehabilitation. You'll be in charge of the program. Jonathan had lost a lot of weight and looked completely worn down.He stood outside the school gates in the biting cold, staring straight at me from across the street. He was the director of the adaptive sports academy and the one who had posted my bail.We had known each other for years.Back when Jonathan was paralyzed, I had reached out to Daniel to get his opinion on Jonathan's case. After that, I regularly sent him my progress journals and training plans. When the news about the celebration party broke online, he was the one who reached out to me.Daniel took hold of Alexia's wheelchair and then took my heavy canvas bag of rehab notes from me.He didn't ask who the broken man standing across the street was. He simply stood beside me, keeping a respectful distance.Jonathan's gaze fell on Daniel's hand holding my bag, and his face turned pale. He walked up to me and held out the deed with my name on

Amber refused to give my family home back and doubled down with outrageous demands. She wanted half of everything Jonathan had earned over the years, including his prize money, endorsement deals, and real estate."I helped you rebuild your career, took care of everything behind the scenes, and did everything a wife was supposed to do."You gave me that house for my birthday and bought me the other properties and cars willingly. Why should I give any of them back? I deserve to be compensated for everything I've done."Amber's tone was utterly self-righteous.For the first time, Jonathan refused to back down. "That money and those assets were meant for Yvette from the beginning."His voice was cold. "They're what I owe her for the eight years she sacrificed for me. Don't you dare touch a single cent."His words completely set Amber off. She dropped all pretense."Who are you trying to fool with this devotion act now?" She sneered."You're the one who hurt Yvette the most, not me

The next day, I got an international call from Kate Chapman, a former coworker back home."Yvette, you won't believe this," she whispered, her voice tight with shock. "Jonathan pulled every string he had to investigate Amber. And he found out everything that happened to you before wasn't a coincidence at all."I held the phone, looking out at the sunlit sky over the unfamiliar city."Really?" I replied calmly. "He's probably regretting it now."Kate sighed. "Regretting it? That's an understatement. His hands were shaking when he got the evidence."According to her, my former landlord had handed over bank transfer records showing Amber had paid him to evict me, along with screenshots of messages from Amber's assistant. The nurse at the hospital had eventually cracked under pressure and confessed everything. On top of that, Amber had pretended to be a member of Jonathan's team and spread rumors that I was a mentally unstable stalker. She was the one who'd ordered security to drag m

The plane landed, and I stepped into the chilly air of an unfamiliar city.Ms. Phoebe Miller, the coordinator from the adaptive sports academy, was already waiting at the airport. She didn't ask about my injured arm or say anything about the rumors that had been blowing up online. Instead, she simply took my suitcase and gave me a warm smile."Coach Sloan, the kids have been waiting for you."The school overseas had covered my bail, and their lawyer had escorted me all the way to the airport.I was taken straight to the classroom, where more than a dozen children in wheelchairs or braces were already waiting.Alexia Curtis, who sat in the front row, had a congenital spinal condition that left her unable to stand. She couldn't engage her core properly. After missing the training mitts several times in a row, she threw off her gloves in frustration."What's the point of learning any of this if I can't even stand in a real ring?" Her voice cracked with despair. "We're not even norm

Limping into the exhibition match's partner hospital with my swollen ankle, I handed over my ID at the front desk. The nurse typed a few things into the computer, and her expression instantly hardened. She shoved my ID back and said coldly, "Sorry, Ms. Sloan. We can't treat you here."I froze. Blood from my elbow had already soaked through half my sleeve. The nurse stared at me without expression and pressed the call button on her desk. Within seconds, two security guards grabbed me by the arms and dragged me out of the emergency room.I sat down beside a flower bed, my hands shaking as I pulled out my phone and called Jonathan. It rang for a long time before someone finally answered."Hello?"But it was Amber. She had put me on speaker, and I could hear reporters talking in the background."Yvette, you know I'm Jonathan's wife. Why do you keep calling him and harassing him?" She deliberately raised her voice so everyone nearby could hear.My knuckles turned white as I gripped
