Chapter 4

Penulis: LittleScribe233
Since I'd decided to go to Northshore, I started sorting through everything the Judds had given me.

All in all, there were three sets of ill-fitting clothes, a watch still in its casing, an unused debit card, and the suit from the family dinner.

I'd already returned the suit. I left everything else in their respective packaging as well. I was putting everything into a box when Mom came in.

"Why are you packing all this stuff out of the blue?"

"I'm returning them."

She rummaged through the box, her expression darkening.

"Here you go again. We're your parents! Do you seriously think we need you to sign an IOU just because we bought you a few clothes?"

"No need. I haven't worn any of them, so I can just return everything to you untouched," I said.

"Must you insist on being so formal with us and acting like we're strangers?" Mom snapped.

I paused and looked at her. "You're the one who said that you guys are free to spend your money on whomever you want and that I had no right to ask questions. Well, I'm not questioning your spending, and I'm not spending your money either, so what's wrong with that?"

Mom's lips parted, but in the end, all she said was, "I didn't mean to say that. It only came out in the heat of the moment."

"Right." I continued packing the things.

Mom stood there for a while, probably waiting for me to back down and accept the olive branch. It was probably what most people would do, but not me.

Ever since I was little, many people constantly told me that orphans were forever indebted to others because they lived off the generosity of other people.

Being forced to accept that your dignity was less than others was an unbearable feeling.

When that lunch lady declared that we should be grateful for whatever little food we received, I made sure to find out just how much we truly ate.

When the school board chairman's daughter told me that I was indebted to her family for the scholarship I received, I withdrew from the school right away.

Since my parents were now claiming that I was indebted to them for looking for me, I had no choice but to repay them for that as well.

Before Mom turned to leave, she said, "Colby is taking his piano teacher out to dinner this evening. Are you joining us?"

"No."

"He specifically told me he wants to mend his relationship with you."

"Convey my thanks to him for me."

Once the door closed, I transferred the 310,000 dollars I had saved up to Dad. The transaction remark read, "Repayment for the expenses incurred while looking for me. The remaining 170,000 dollars will be repaid in installments."

Less than a minute later, Dad opened the door. "Why did you transfer the money to me?"

"Didn't you show me the breakdown of expenses so that I could pay you back?"

"I was just teaching you to be grateful!"

"I'm very grateful. That's why I'm paying you back."

Dad looked livid. "Being a family isn't a business transaction, Bryan! Do you think you can act like we never gave birth to you once you return the money to us?"

"Nope." I looked at him. "But you guys didn't raise me either. That's also a fact."

A heavy silence fell over the room. My words seemed to have struck a nerve with Dad. His voice was low as he said, "We spent years looking for you."

"I know. That's why I'll pay you back."

He stared at me for a few more seconds before storming out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

For the next few days, no one in the family spoke to me. Macy put together a photo wall for Colby right in the living room. Mom hired a team to redecorate his piano room, and Dad promised to get him a new piano.

The night before I left for Northshore, Macy finally remembered my existence. She sent me an invoice and said, "Collect Colby's suit from the mall for him, and stop throwing this tantrum of yours. We're a family."

My reply was brief. "I'm busy."

She immediately called me. "How can you be busy? The only thing you do all day is act petty and start fights."

"I'm going to Northshore."

"For how many days?"

"I'm continuing my education there. I won't be back for some time."

There was a short silence on the other end, followed by a frosty sneer. "Who are you trying to scare by pretending to run away, huh? Mom and Dad have only just welcomed you back into the family. I doubt you'd bear to leave."

"Why wouldn't I?"

I ended the call and removed her number from my emergency contacts.

The next morning, I left my room with only a backpack. Inside it was my laptop, my ID, and a photo I'd taken with Jane Nelson, the orphanage director.

I didn't take a single thing the Judd family had bought.

When I reached the bottom of the stairs, the family was busy helping Colby choose a piano.

Mom glanced at me and asked indifferently, "Where are you off to so early in the morning?"

"Northshore."

She continued to look through the catalog without lifting her head. "Get home earlier this evening. Colby wants to have the cake you brought home the other day."

"Right."

I didn't tell her that my response wasn't a promise to be back home earlier today. It was a reminder to myself that I would never have to explain myself to anyone in this house anymore.

Just as the cab pulled away from the Judd residence, I got a message from Professor Lakewood.

"Where are you? I just collected the key to your dorm."

I replied, "I'm on my way."

My admission letter lay quietly in my backpack.

There was a dorm room waiting for me with my name on it, a research team ready for me to join, and people who understood exactly why I was worth keeping.

I left the Judd family group chat and removed my biological parents from my emergency contacts list as well.

22 years ago, they lost me. But after bringing me back 22 years later, they still expected me to step aside for someone else.

Well, I no longer cared about being their son. I was returning them to Colby. I didn't want them anymore.

From now on, they were no longer my parents and my sister. They were just Franklin Judd, Tammy Quentin, and Macy Judd, Colby's family.

At 9:00 am on the first day of the 17th month, Franklin's phone buzzed. The final 10,000 dollars had been transferred. The remark no longer listed the remaining balance.Instead, it read, "Payment made in full. Thank you for looking for me."What a polite message it was—so polite that it sounded like a stranger they'd helped at random. The family group chat remained quiet all morning. Tammy was the first to break the silence."Is Bryan really never coming back?"No one answered her. That afternoon, Franklin told the driver to get the car ready. All four of them came up to Northshore. When they arrived at the campus, Tammy told the visitor desk that she was my mother. After checking the records, the staff member shook his head and said, "Mr. Judd hasn't listed you as a family contact. His emergency contact is Professor Lakewood. We need his confirmation before we can let you in."Tammy clutched her ID card, unable to speak. She was the woman who had given birth to me, yet she ne

During the sixth month, Tammy went to the orphanage without telling me about it. I only found out when Ms. Nelson mentioned it during one of our calls.Tammy had brought a lot of gifts and even prepared to donate a new building to the orphanage. She had visited the room where I'd lived as a child. Eight small beds had been crammed together. Instead of a name, the beds were labeled with a number.Ms. Nelson told her that when I was seven years old, after I finished investigating the meat, the first thing I did wasn't to claim credit. Instead, I made sure the kids got all the meat that was supposed to be set aside for them.I didn't take even a single extra piece for myself.Ms. Nelson didn't accept the donation right away. "As a child, what Bryan feared the most was someone giving him something and then telling him that he had to obey them."Tammy's face paled.Ms. Nelson showed her the notebook I used back then, where I recorded how much meat the kids ate every day. On the very l

During the fourth month, Tammy had someone go through the footage taken at the family dinner to welcome me home. She wanted to pick a family portrait to have printed and hung up in the living room.Gabriel stared at the shirt in the footage, looking as though he wanted to say something but couldn't bring himself to."Mrs. Judd, there's something I've been hesitant to tell you."I later learned that before the family dinner, Colby had personally handed the shirt to a maid. He said that since I'd only just returned and didn't have a proper formal outfit, I could wear his shirt. The maid thought it was a very generous gesture and made a point of telling Tammy about it.But at the dinner table, he'd asked me in front of everyone whether I owed him for borrowing his shirt.Tammy hadn't taken the shirt for me. He'd deliberately had it handed to me and waited for me to put it on.After hearing that, Tammy rewound the footage and watched it again. When I took off the suit and shirt, ever

The second month, I made the transfer at exactly 9:00 am again. Franklin didn't reply. The third month was the same. I assumed they had gotten used to it.Then, my old college sent some mail to the Judd residence. It was a parcel with my certificate of academic excellence for being valedictorian, a commemorative plaque, and photos from the graduation ceremony.Macy asked me why I hadn't told them the school named me valedictorian."I sent it in the group chat," I replied."What group chat?""The family group chat."Macy went quiet for a while. The family group chat had been flooded with messages that day. Tammy had been busy choosing Colby's outfit for the competition. Franklin had been preoccupied with making arrangements, including instructing the driver to secure a parking lot ahead of time. Macy herself kept sending encouraging messages to cheer Colby on.My messages had been drowned out among theirs, and not one person had responded to me.Tammy scrolled up for a lo

It had been a month since I left, and not a single one of the Judds contacted me again. That wasn't surprising. They were waiting for me to be the one who caved and came crawling back to them.In reality, I was too busy to even think about them. The research project had just launched, and the lights in the lab stayed on late into the night every day. After Professor Lakewood noticed that I kept forgetting to eat, he simply handed my meal card to Shawn."Keep an eye on him. If he skips a meal, I'll deduct your stipend."Shawn immediately added me to a group chat where the research team discussed what to eat every day. The pinned announcement read, "Bryan doesn't eat celery and doesn't like anything too sweet."I read it twice. It didn't take knowing something for 22 years to remember what their preferences were after all. Just a casual question over a meal sufficed.Shawn sent a message."The newcomers are usually too embarrassed to speak up, so I'd rather make it clear upfront. T

Two hours later, I arrived in Northshore. The person waiting to greet me was Shawn Cassidy, another one of Professor Lakewood's students. He was taken aback to see that all I had was a backpack."Is that all the luggage you brought?""It's enough."He didn't press any further. Holding my backpack for me, he took me to the office to complete my admission paperwork. The dorm was a double room, and the bed by the window already had my name on it. My name was also on the lab access card, desk nameplate, and project roster.Shawn handed me the key, saying, "Professor Lakewood was worried you wouldn't be able to find your way around on your first visit, so he had me get everything ready in advance. The left side of the desk is yours, and the cabinet is empty, too. Put your things wherever you like."For the first time, someone had reserved a place for me without asking whether I planned to stay for long. That afternoon, Professor Lakewood introduced me to the project team."This is
