My fiancé put my engagement ring on my sister’s finger. When I told him to take it back, my family called me ungrateful. Three months earlier, Chloe had pushed me out of the path of a car. When she woke, she said she couldn’t remember the last three years, including her breakup with Julian, the man who was now my fiancé. The doctor asked us to keep her surroundings calm, and my family decided that meant no one could tell her anything she didn’t want to hear. I agreed to give her time. She had saved my life, and I wanted to help her recover. When she wanted my bedroom and the bracelet Grandma had left me, I let her have them. When my parents turned my promotion dinner into a celebration of her recovery, I stayed quiet. But every concession led to another request. Whenever I said something had gone too far, Mom reminded me that Chloe had almost died for me. Dad told me to be patient, and Nathan said I should be grateful. Even when Julian gave her my ring, he expected me to understand. “Correcting her would upset her,” he said. At what should have been my engagement party, Chloe wore my dress and stood beside him while our guests congratulated them. Afterward, alone in the lounge, she leaned close. “All those fittings, and it still looks better on me.” When my family came in, I told them I wouldn’t keep pretending my fiancé belonged to her. Mom sighed. “She saved your life. Can’t you let her have one happy evening?” I had spent three months helping my sister recover, and they still treated every boundary as ingratitude. I wasn’t going to marry a man who expected me to accept being replaced. That night, I decided to leave.

Chapter 1

Five days until departure

Chloe emerged from the lounge holding her forehead.

Everyone moved at once. Mom caught her elbow. Nathan shoved a chair aside. Julian lifted her into his arms before she could say what was wrong.

“Another headache,” he said. “We’re going to the hospital.”

Dad paused beside me.

“Stay and sort things out here. We don’t need the guests talking.”

Then they were gone.

The hotel manager approached with the final bill. Dress alterations, extra place settings, replacement glassware for the champagne tower Chloe had knocked over.

Eighteen thousand dollars. The event account was in my name.

Attached were the approvals for changing the names and photographs displayed in the ballroom. Dad had approved the changes. Nathan had arranged them.

Julian had signed.

Beside the video I had made of our life together, he had written: Remove. Not relevant to this event.

I paid the balance and asked for copies. Then I went backstage for my laptop and identification.

My engagement dress lay beside a trash bin, its pale skirt stained with wine. Chloe had worn it for four hours.

I left it there.

Outside, my phone rang.

Adrian Moretti.

Three months earlier, he had offered me a position at Moretti Holdings’ European headquarters in Milan. I had turned him down because Julian said he didn’t want a wife who lived an ocean away.

Moretti Holdings ran warehouses, freight terminals, and a logistics technology business. Its chairman also headed the Moretti crime family. I had reviewed the offer with an independent lawyer before deciding against it.

“Sophie,” he said now. “The position is still open. I need your answer.”

Through the hotel doors, I could see a cleaner sweeping petals off the floor.

“Yes.”

Silence, then a quieter question.

“Do you need time?”

“Five days. I have things to close out.”

“Then five days.”

His assistant sent the revised contract while we were on the phone. Same salary. Same role.

I sat beneath the hotel canopy, read it, and signed.

By the time the car arrived, my flight confirmation was in my inbox.

One way to Milan. Friday evening.

I saved the boarding details and opened a blank note.

Passport. Personal accounts. Medication. Lawyer. Packing.

For once, the list contained only things I needed to do for myself.
