Chapter 4

Author: Enlightened
I thought I'd scared them off. At the very least, I thought they'd back off after our confrontation that day.

But I'd underestimated how shameless they were.

Sierra's room was unusually quiet that night. When I opened the door, she was curled up on her bed with her back to me. Her phone lay on the floor, its screen shattered.

I picked it up. The screen was still on, and Dad had texted her.

"Sierra, I'm sorry. Your mom and I really wanted you to come stay with us, but Shannon wouldn't let you. You probably don't know this, but she's always thought you took our love away from her. That's why she doesn't want you to be happy.

"I've always loved you two equally. She went to summer camp back then, too. She even left you home alone for a whole month so she could go. I wanted to make it up to you, which is why I wanted to bring you here. But she won't let you come no matter what. It's disappointing, but there's nothing we can do. We won't contact you again. Take care, sweetheart."

Sierra sent him multiple messages after that, but Dad never replied.

My hands shook as I walked over to Sierra's bed. "Sierra, listen to me. It's not what you think…"

"Get out!" Sierra screamed, throwing a pillow at me. "Are you happy now? They won't talk to me anymore. It's all your fault. Why? Why won't you let me go? What right do you have to stop me?"

After that day, Sierra seemed like a different person. She stopped talking to me. Every day, she did nothing but eat and lock herself in her room to study.

Unable to get through to Dad, she unleashed all her fury on me.

Sierra didn't understand why I'd been so adamant about keeping her away from them. She hated me even more for making her lose our parents.

But I couldn't tell her a single thing.

I couldn't tell her what kind of place that summer camp was, what I'd gone through at 18, or what kind of deal our parents had made for money.

I wanted her to go her whole life without ever finding out about those disgusting things.

Later, she got into that prestigious college. The day her acceptance letter arrived, she blocked me on every platform.

Her last text read, "I'll find a way to cover my living expenses at college and repay you for everything you've spent on me. Don't contact me again."

I sat on the couch all night, staring at her message.

When school started, I went to campus to look for her. I wanted to give her the money, but she wouldn't take it.

My phone rang, pulling me back to reality.

Helen said, "I've thought about it, Shannon. No matter what you think, Sierra has the right to know the truth. You can't hide it from her under the pretense of protecting her.

"Also, have you thought about this? Would your parents keep hounding her after you die? And if she grew fond of them because you hid the truth from her, would she end up believing them and suffering the same fate as you?

"Only by knowing the truth can she avoid suffering the same fate as you."

I gripped my phone, feeling my heart skip a beat. "What did you do?"

"I told her part of the truth. Sorry, Shannon. I can't see you like this."

With that, Helen hung up.

I stood there, feeling cold all over. Then someone knocked on the door. I looked through the peephole and saw Sierra.

For the next few weeks, my condition deteriorated rapidly. The doctor gently told Sierra that treatment was no longer working and recommended transferring me to hospice care.Sierra refused to give up and looked everywhere for other treatments. She even reached out to hospitals overseas. But I knew it was inevitable. On a rainy night, the pain became excruciating, and not even the painkillers worked anymore.Sierra held my hand tightly as tears fell onto it. She begged, "Shannon, please don't leave me. I beg you. Please."I tried to open my eyes and look at her. "Sierra, listen to me."She leaned in, bringing her ear close to my lips."Once I'm gone, pass the evidence… to the police."Sierra nodded, tears dripping onto my face."Live well… Don't let hate consume your life…"She choked out. "Okay, I promise. I'll do as you say."I struggled to lift my hand and stroke her face. "You're all grown up now… I'm so glad…"Sierra sobbed. "Shannon…""Don't be sad. Having you by my

The hospital room curtains were half-drawn. I leaned against the headboard and looked at Sierra, trying to think of a way to approach the topic."Do you remember how people in the village used to say Mom couldn't have a son when you were little? There's something I never told you. They took a baby boy with them when they left."Sierra nodded.I cleared my throat and said, "That's not their kid."Stunned, Sierra asked, "What do you mean?"I looked into her eyes. "They bought Leo. They didn't move away for work back then. They wanted to buy a boy."Sierra's mouth was agape, but no sound came out.I continued, "They'd always wanted a son, but after what happened to Dad, they couldn't have any more children. So they spent years saving up before getting in touch with a human trafficking ring."She finally found her voice. "How did you know?"I narrowed my eyes, trying to remember as the memories flooded back. "I witnessed it. The day they left, I saw them holding a baby. His baby b

We eventually decided to move to another hospital. Treatment was harder than I'd expected. The chemo made me so sick I couldn't eat, and my hair started falling out in handfuls.Sierra stayed with me the whole time. She told her school about our situation, and they let her put off college for a year. She told me, "I can start college a year later, but you're the only sister I have."Every day, Sierra went back and forth between the hospital and our place, doing laundry, cooking, and taking care of me.Sometimes, I'd wake up in the middle of the night and find her slumped beside my hospital bed, still clutching her unfinished course exercises. She insisted on studying her college courses on her own so she wouldn't fall too far behind. Finally, I couldn't help but say, "You're going to wear yourself out!"Sierra shook her head and forced a smile. "This is nothing compared to what you did for me."Helen would visit me occasionally, bringing some supplements and news from the outsi

Sierra let go of my hand and sank back into the couch, murmuring, "Six months…"Then, as if she'd suddenly thought of something, she lifted her head, her eyes lighting up. "Shannon, let's go to a bigger hospital! I'll go through this with you. There has to be a way!"I shook my head helplessly. "It won't work, Sierra. I've already…"She stood up and grabbed my hand. "I don't believe it! Let's go to a better hospital. There has to be something they can do! The money…"Sierra looked at the envelope. "I don't need that money anymore. I won't go to college. Use it for your treatment! We can spend as much as we need!"I pulled my hand away, genuinely upset this time. "Don't be ridiculous! How can you just give up your education? How are you supposed to make a living? What will people think of you?"Sierra's reply left me speechless."Then what about you? I won't even have a sister anymore. Why should I care what anyone thinks of me?" She wailed. "I'm sorry… I'm so sorry, Shannon. I r

I opened the door, and the two of us stared at each other in the entryway, the air between us heavy with tension.Sierra's eyes were red, and she was clutching an envelope. After a long while, she spoke in a hoarse voice. "Why didn't you tell me?"I didn't answer. I just moved aside to let her in.She didn't move, staring at me stubbornly. "What exactly was that summer camp?"I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, then turned and walked into the living room. "Come in. Let's talk."The day had finally come.Sierra followed me in.I sat on the couch in silence for a long time, unsure how to bring up the topic. In the end, I chose to break it to her gently."In the first year after Mom and Dad left the village to find work, they came back and said they wanted to send me to a summer camp in the city. They said room and board were covered, and I'd get to meet kids from the big city."But when I got there, I realized it wasn't a summer camp. It was a deal."Sierra's fingers tigh
