Chapter 2

Autor: Kaelin Veyra
Mom's furious shouting filled the church.

Something stirred deep in my mind, and Vittorio's cold whisper brushed through it.

[Finally, some backup.]

My eyes stung, and before I could stop it, they filled with tears.

Mom marched up the red carpet toward the altar steps.

The guards and the priest, Father Michael Doyle, didn't dare make a sound. They all lowered their heads and got out of her way.

"Which bitch has the nerve to come to my daughter's wedding and..."

Mom broke off as Selena stepped gracefully out from behind Carlo, smiling.

The second Mom saw her, the anger froze on her face.

Then came a thud.

In front of every guest in the church, she dropped to one knee.

It was a formal gesture of allegiance to Selena.

"Ms. Rossi, I had no idea you were here on important business... Elsie doesn't know any better. Please don't be angry with her!"

I stood frozen. My blood ran cold.

Mom got up and yanked me over to her.

She hissed through her teeth, "Why aren't you apologizing to the Don and Ms. Rossi right now?!"

She didn't even glance at my torn dress.

She leaned in close and warned me in a voice only I could hear.

"If your dead father hadn't saved the Don's life, do you really think Carlo would give you the time of day? Everyone in the family knows the Don and Ms. Rossi are perfect for each other! Stop making a scene and say you're sorry!"

This was my own mother.

She cared only about what she could gain, and she would trample me whenever it suited her.

As Mom scolded me, the dark look on Carlo's face eased a little.

"Elsie, even your mother gets it. Why can't you?"

He straightened his bow tie and looked down his nose at me.

"I don't expect you to help me with the business the way Selena does. But you could at least behave."

I didn't help him?

I was the one who kept the prisoners' families calm. That was why the prisoners fell in line so quickly.

I was the one who nursed the wounded day and night.

Yet none of that blood and sweat counted as helping him.

Selena sighed softly.

She went over to Mom and took her arm, all sweetness and concern.

"Mrs. Marino, please don't blame Elsie. She just cares about Carlo too much, and it got the better of her."

Mom grabbed Selena's hand right back, beaming.

"Ms. Rossi, you're the best mind this family has. Please don't stick up for this girl! The Don and I spoiled her rotten, and she can't see the bigger picture!"

They played off each other perfectly.

Playing the loving mother and devoted daughter, they branded me an unreasonable brat.

My stomach churned with nausea.

I didn't look at any of them again. I turned and walked straight for the church doors.

"Stop right there!"

Carlo's voice cracked like a whip.

"Where do you think you're going without my say-so?"

Click!

All around me, guns were drawn in a sharp, deafening chorus of clicks.

More than 12 guards in black thumbed off their safeties at the same time.

Every black muzzle pointed at me.

Mom went white with fear and rushed to block my way.

"You've lost your mind! Your brother's tuition, the upkeep on the estate, we depend on the Don for all of it! And you'd defy him?"

I stopped with my back to them and gave a cold, thin smile.

That was when I heard it.

The voice that had gone quiet deep in my mind let out a low, sinister sigh.

[Tsk. What kind of mother acts like that? Poor thing, give me a little more time. I only need a bit more strength to break this damn curse holding me back.]

His voice dripped with bloodthirsty rage, making my skin crawl.

But I didn't have the strength left to answer him, not even in my head.

I was so tired.

After ten years of giving him everything, all I'd earned was betrayal and a gun aimed at me.

I turned my head and looked at Carlo.

"Go ahead. Shoot."

I looked him right in the eye. My voice was strangely calm.

Carlo froze for a second. His grip on the gun tightened, and panic flickered in his eyes.

"Elsie, don't make me do this."

"I'm not making you do anything." I pointed at my heart. "Right here. One shot, quick and clean."

Behind him, Selena tugged lightly at Carlo's sleeve.

"Carlo, it's still your wedding day. Spilling blood would be bad luck."

Carlo seized the excuse and lowered his gun.

"Lock her in the dressing room. Nobody lets her out without my permission."

Two guards stepped up right away and grabbed me by the arms, one on each side.

I fought them with everything I had, but their hands were like iron clamps.

Then the velvet box in Carlo's hand let out a piercing alarm!

Vittorio snorted."Him? He's in the slums, fighting stray dogs over half a piece of moldy bread. I hear someone broke his leg yesterday."He turned his head and went on."As for Selena, she's been at the bottom of the sea feeding the sharks for a while now. And I wiped the Rossi family out, root and branch. On the West Coast, we're the only ones who call the shots now."He described all that bloodshed in the most casual tone. But I wasn't scared at all.I felt safer than I ever had.For the past ten years, I'd been fighting for someone else.No one had ever done what Vittorio had. He stood in front of me without flinching and cleared every obstacle from my path."Elsie."Vittorio's careless grin vanished. He looked me in the eye, serious now."For the past ten years, you lived like a dog for a man who didn't deserve you. From now on, you never have to please anyone again."He took my hand and bit open one of his fingertips. A drop of his blood fell onto my ring finger, and the Raven's

Carlo looked up, his eyes empty."Kill me. If it's at your hands, so be it."He lifted his chin and bared his neck, as if that could win back the last scrap of dignity. But I wasn't about to give him what he wanted."Kill you? That'd be letting you off too easily."I stood up and walked over to him."Don't you love being in power? Don't you think everyone else only slows you down? As of today, you lose your title and everything you own. You're going to the worst slum on the West Coast. Let's see how you like being stepped on and kicked around."Carlo went deathly pale. That was where his enemies had once hunted him and where I'd carried him out on my back to save his life. They were full of violence, hunger, and despair. For a Don used to being treated like royalty, being sent there would be worse than death."No... Elsie, you can't do this to me..."Carlo finally fell apart. He clung to my legs and sobbed."I'm begging you, just make it quick!"I kicked him off me."Take him away."On

They'd come running at the sound of gunfire. They gasped at the scene before them: guards groaning all over the floor, Selena with a knife wound through her hand, and Carlo sobbing on his knees."Don! What happened here?" one of the elders asked in horror.Carlo didn't say anything. He just lay slumped on the floor, hopeless.I sat there, toying with the knife."What happened? Simple. I'm cleaning house."I flung the knife.Thunk! It buried itself deep in the wooden floor, right at the elder's feet."Get everyone to the main hall. Anyone who has a problem with that ends up like this trash on the floor."I didn't raise my voice, but no one could question the authority behind it.The elders exchanged looks. In the end, they gave in to the sheer menace coming off me.One by one, they bowed their heads and backed out.Soon, every core member of the Corvo family had assembled in the main hall.I sat at the head of the room.Carlo and Selena knelt below me, tied up tight.Mom had come to as

Selena still tried to talk her way out."I don't know what you're talking about... I really love Carlo..."I had no patience for her lies. With a flick of my wrist, I drove the knife straight through her hand.It pinned her hand to the wooden floor."Aaah!"Her scream was almost deafening."I'm not a patient man." I pulled the knife free, and blood sprayed from the wound."The next one goes into your eye."I slowly moved the tip of the knife toward her right eye.Selena completely broke down."I'll talk! I'll talk! My father, Salvatore Rossi, sent me! I planted the bomb and forged the embezzlement records!"Selena kept going, trembling all over."The plan was to get rid of Elsie so I could control Carlo completely and then take over your family!"There it was. The truth. The torture chamber went deathly quiet.Carlo looked like he'd been struck by lightning. He couldn't move. His prized consigliere, the woman he loved, was a mole who'd been plotting to destroy him all along.Yet becaus

Carlo's fingers trembled. He still hadn't pulled the trigger.I snorted."What's wrong? Too scared? You're not just a stupid Don. You're a coward. How did my family ever fall into the hands of trash like you?"Carlo's pupils shrank."Wh-what did you just say? Your family?"I stopped smiling. An oppressive force burst from me and filled the room.It carried the terrifying weight of a man who'd ruled for years and killed without hesitation. The air in the whole room seemed to freeze."Listen up, trash."I spoke slowly, one word at a time."I'm Vittorio Corvo, the founding Don of this family.""Vittorio Corvo?" Carlo looked at me like he'd just heard the joke of the century."The founding Don has been dead for over 100 years! Elsie, there's a limit to how far you can take this act!"He finally made up his mind and jerked the trigger.Bang! The bullet screamed out of the barrel. All I did was tilt my head slightly. It whistled past my ear and shattered the cross behind me.Carlo froze. He'

The torture chamber went dead silent.Everyone stared at me like I was a monster.Carlo jumped up from the bench. He pulled his gun and aimed it at me."Elsie, what the hell are you playing at?"Selena ducked behind Carlo, her voice shaking."Has she lost her mind?"I rolled my stiff neck. The bones cracked and ground.Vittorio's memories and strength swiftly reshaped my frail body.I raised a hand and looked at the slender, pale fingers. Then I clicked my tongue in utter disgust."This body is pathetically weak. But it'll do against losers like you."I looked up at Carlo, my dark gold eyes full of mockery."Boy, that's a Browning M1911 in your hand, isn't it? I brought that gun into this family. And now you're pointing my old toy at me?"Carlo scowled and barked an order."Fire!"The guards snapped out of it.One after another, they pulled their triggers.Bang, bang, bang!Gunfire thundered through the enclosed chamber. But I didn't take cover.Vittorio's razor-sharp senses made the b
