Chapter 4

Autor: Kaelin Veyra
Back in my room, I didn't treat my wounds.

I just sat there quietly in the dark.

I watched the blood slowly seep out and turn my ruined wedding dress red.

Late that night, someone pushed the door open.

Carlo walked in.

He was carrying a first aid kit, and he looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.

"Elsie, what happened today was an accident. Selena was only thinking about the family's safety. She has to stay alert all the time."

He crouched in front of me and tried to take my hand.

"Don't touch me."

I pulled my hand away.

Carlo's face darkened.

"I came here to patch you up myself. What more do you want?"

He bent down and leaned in, his expression turning cold.

"Enough. So the wedding didn't happen today. We'll still have our wedding night later. That'll make up for it."

He gripped my chin and bent to kiss me.

Just then, a jumble of footsteps came pounding down the hall.

"Carlo! It's not that simple!"

Selena stormed in with a group of guards.

She slammed a stack of papers onto the table and glared at me.

"Someone deliberately let the man who delivered the ring escape! And that's not all. We traced a huge sum of money to a rival family's account. The person who moved it was Elsie's mother!"

Carlo shot to his feet and turned to stare at me in disbelief.

"Elsie, you'd sell us out to our enemies just to get back at me?"

The words on those pages hurt to read.

Mom loved money more than anything. That much was true.

But she was a coward through and through.

She'd never have the nerve to work with a rival family, not in a million years.

This was clearly a trap designed to kill me.

"I didn't." I looked at Carlo calmly. "Selena has the authority to let people out, too."

"Enough!" Carlo cut me off. Fury, disgust, and disappointment twisted his face.

"Selena would never do something like that! Only that money-hungry mother of yours would pull a stunt like this! So the two of you cooked this up together to screw me over?!"

Before long, the guards dragged Mom in like a dead dog.

The second she was through the door, she dropped to her knees at Carlo's feet.

"Don, please, spare me! I took the money, but I swear I never worked with the enemy! It was all Elsie! She told me to do it!"

She couldn't meet my eyes, but every word cut like a knife.

"She said that bitch had the Don under her spell, and she wanted some money stashed away just in case!"

Faced with proof she couldn't argue with, she dumped all the blame on me without a second thought.

Carlo was so angry he laughed.

"Fine. Just fine. Elsie, you've really disappointed me. The family rules are clear. Anyone who betrays the family pays with their life."

He turned his back on me and didn't look at me again.

"Take her to the torture chamber."

The guards came at me like a pack of wolves.

They pinned me to the floor.

I didn't fight.

I just stared at Carlo's back.

This was my reward for giving him everything.

Framed.

Betrayed.

Thrown away without a shred of mercy.

The torture chamber was cold and damp.

They tied me to a rough wooden cross.

In front of me were red-hot branding irons and barbed whips.

Carlo sat on a high bench, his face blank.

Selena stood beside him with a cold, victorious smirk.

"Do it."

Carlo gave the order in a cold voice.

The executioner raised a red-hot iron and brought it down toward my chest.

The heat scorched the air.

It hissed and sizzled.

I closed my eyes and waited to die.

Just before the iron touched my skin, a terrifying force erupted from the deepest part of my soul.

Bang!

It was like an invisible sledgehammer had slammed into the executioner.

He flew backward.

He slammed into the wall and spewed blood.

The thick iron chains holding me snapped, link by link.

I slowly opened my eyes.

They had turned an eerie dark gold.

"You think this junk can hold me? Carlo, you're a disgrace to every Don who came before you."

My voice had changed.

It was no longer a woman's cool, clear voice.

It was a man's voice, deep and smooth and bone-chilling.

Vittorio had taken over completely.

Vittorio snorted."Him? He's in the slums, fighting stray dogs over half a piece of moldy bread. I hear someone broke his leg yesterday."He turned his head and went on."As for Selena, she's been at the bottom of the sea feeding the sharks for a while now. And I wiped the Rossi family out, root and branch. On the West Coast, we're the only ones who call the shots now."He described all that bloodshed in the most casual tone. But I wasn't scared at all.I felt safer than I ever had.For the past ten years, I'd been fighting for someone else.No one had ever done what Vittorio had. He stood in front of me without flinching and cleared every obstacle from my path."Elsie."Vittorio's careless grin vanished. He looked me in the eye, serious now."For the past ten years, you lived like a dog for a man who didn't deserve you. From now on, you never have to please anyone again."He took my hand and bit open one of his fingertips. A drop of his blood fell onto my ring finger, and the Raven's

Carlo looked up, his eyes empty."Kill me. If it's at your hands, so be it."He lifted his chin and bared his neck, as if that could win back the last scrap of dignity. But I wasn't about to give him what he wanted."Kill you? That'd be letting you off too easily."I stood up and walked over to him."Don't you love being in power? Don't you think everyone else only slows you down? As of today, you lose your title and everything you own. You're going to the worst slum on the West Coast. Let's see how you like being stepped on and kicked around."Carlo went deathly pale. That was where his enemies had once hunted him and where I'd carried him out on my back to save his life. They were full of violence, hunger, and despair. For a Don used to being treated like royalty, being sent there would be worse than death."No... Elsie, you can't do this to me..."Carlo finally fell apart. He clung to my legs and sobbed."I'm begging you, just make it quick!"I kicked him off me."Take him away."On

They'd come running at the sound of gunfire. They gasped at the scene before them: guards groaning all over the floor, Selena with a knife wound through her hand, and Carlo sobbing on his knees."Don! What happened here?" one of the elders asked in horror.Carlo didn't say anything. He just lay slumped on the floor, hopeless.I sat there, toying with the knife."What happened? Simple. I'm cleaning house."I flung the knife.Thunk! It buried itself deep in the wooden floor, right at the elder's feet."Get everyone to the main hall. Anyone who has a problem with that ends up like this trash on the floor."I didn't raise my voice, but no one could question the authority behind it.The elders exchanged looks. In the end, they gave in to the sheer menace coming off me.One by one, they bowed their heads and backed out.Soon, every core member of the Corvo family had assembled in the main hall.I sat at the head of the room.Carlo and Selena knelt below me, tied up tight.Mom had come to as

Selena still tried to talk her way out."I don't know what you're talking about... I really love Carlo..."I had no patience for her lies. With a flick of my wrist, I drove the knife straight through her hand.It pinned her hand to the wooden floor."Aaah!"Her scream was almost deafening."I'm not a patient man." I pulled the knife free, and blood sprayed from the wound."The next one goes into your eye."I slowly moved the tip of the knife toward her right eye.Selena completely broke down."I'll talk! I'll talk! My father, Salvatore Rossi, sent me! I planted the bomb and forged the embezzlement records!"Selena kept going, trembling all over."The plan was to get rid of Elsie so I could control Carlo completely and then take over your family!"There it was. The truth. The torture chamber went deathly quiet.Carlo looked like he'd been struck by lightning. He couldn't move. His prized consigliere, the woman he loved, was a mole who'd been plotting to destroy him all along.Yet becaus

Carlo's fingers trembled. He still hadn't pulled the trigger.I snorted."What's wrong? Too scared? You're not just a stupid Don. You're a coward. How did my family ever fall into the hands of trash like you?"Carlo's pupils shrank."Wh-what did you just say? Your family?"I stopped smiling. An oppressive force burst from me and filled the room.It carried the terrifying weight of a man who'd ruled for years and killed without hesitation. The air in the whole room seemed to freeze."Listen up, trash."I spoke slowly, one word at a time."I'm Vittorio Corvo, the founding Don of this family.""Vittorio Corvo?" Carlo looked at me like he'd just heard the joke of the century."The founding Don has been dead for over 100 years! Elsie, there's a limit to how far you can take this act!"He finally made up his mind and jerked the trigger.Bang! The bullet screamed out of the barrel. All I did was tilt my head slightly. It whistled past my ear and shattered the cross behind me.Carlo froze. He'

The torture chamber went dead silent.Everyone stared at me like I was a monster.Carlo jumped up from the bench. He pulled his gun and aimed it at me."Elsie, what the hell are you playing at?"Selena ducked behind Carlo, her voice shaking."Has she lost her mind?"I rolled my stiff neck. The bones cracked and ground.Vittorio's memories and strength swiftly reshaped my frail body.I raised a hand and looked at the slender, pale fingers. Then I clicked my tongue in utter disgust."This body is pathetically weak. But it'll do against losers like you."I looked up at Carlo, my dark gold eyes full of mockery."Boy, that's a Browning M1911 in your hand, isn't it? I brought that gun into this family. And now you're pointing my old toy at me?"Carlo scowled and barked an order."Fire!"The guards snapped out of it.One after another, they pulled their triggers.Bang, bang, bang!Gunfire thundered through the enclosed chamber. But I didn't take cover.Vittorio's razor-sharp senses made the b
