Penulis: Eternity

Chapter 1

Penulis: Eternity
The ballroom fell silent the moment Camille and I crossed the threshold.

A string quartet continued beneath tiers of crystal chandeliers. Champagne gleamed in coupe towers, candlelight flashed across diamonds, and every face turned toward the woman in black silk who had just returned from the dead.

They all knew I had awakened from a three-year coma only a week ago. They also knew that while I was unconscious, my husband had fathered a child with another woman.

Everyone was waiting for me to lose control.

Before the accident, I would have given them exactly what they wanted. I would have overturned the champagne tower, torn the Moreau sapphire necklace from Isabella’s throat, and forced Vincent to choose between us in front of every powerful family in New York.

I would have called it pride, but every public scene had really been the same demand.

Choose me where everyone can see it.

That was the Sophia they remembered—wild, spoiled, and desperate to prove that I mattered to him.

Vincent had always believed he knew how to control that woman.

Vincent stood beneath the central chandelier in a perfectly cut black tuxedo, his newly baptized son resting against one arm.

Isabella Cross leaned into him in ivory silk. At the hollow of her throat rested the Moreau sapphire, surrounded by old-cut diamonds and dark enough to look black beneath the candlelight.

Vincent used to fasten it around my neck before every family gathering, then return it to his private safe with his own hands.

On Isabella, it did not look inherited. It looked stolen.

I looked at Isabella until her fingers rose instinctively to cover the sapphire at her throat.

Vincent noticed. His expression hardened.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

His voice was calm, as if my presence were another problem he needed to manage.

“You sent an invitation to my hospital room.”

“That was a formality. Your doctor said you should avoid crowds.”

“You remembered.”

His gaze moved over my face, checking for exhaustion the same way he used to inspect every injury I received during training.

Then he handed the baby to a nanny and approached me.

“Don’t start a war tonight, Principessa.”

The name once had the power to melt every defense I possessed.

Now, it sounded almost laughable.

“If I had come for war, you wouldn’t need to ask.”

“That’s what concerns me.”

Vincent stopped close enough to block my path.

When he reached for my arm, I caught his wrist and lowered his hand between us.

His eyes narrowed.

“Isabella and Noah do not change your position. You are still my wife. Your home, your name, and everything that belongs to you remain untouched.”

He spoke as if marriage were a title he had reserved for me. As long as I remained Mrs. Moreau, he believed I had lost nothing.

I let my gaze settle on Isabella.

Her face went pale. She shifted Noah higher against her chest and took half a step back.

Vincent moved into my line of sight before I took a single step. He never looked back at Isabella. He kept his eyes on me.

The gesture was painfully familiar.

He had spent years cleaning up my messes, correcting my reckless decisions, and reminding me to behave. He thought chaos was simply part of my nature.

He never understood that every fight had been a demand for him to choose me.

“I already know what happened,” I said. “The doctors told you I would never wake up. You slept with Isabella, and she became pregnant.”

Vincent’s expression tightened.

“I never loved her.”

He corrected me as though that settled everything.

“What happened between us was a mistake. When Isabella told me she was pregnant, I asked her to end it. She disappeared instead.”

His voice remained calm and precise.

“Now she has returned with my son. Noah is Moreau blood. I will not abandon him.”

“And Isabella?”

“She is his mother. She is still recovering from the birth, and she has no protection of her own.”

Three years earlier, I had thrown myself over Vincent when our car went through a barrier. He escaped with minor injuries. I spent the next three years trapped inside my own body.

But I was Sophia. I had survived.

To Vincent, that meant I needed less.

“You have always been able to take care of yourself,” he added. “Isabella and Noah cannot.”

Isabella picked up Noah and approached us.

“Sophia, I never wanted to destroy your marriage. I know Vincent has always loved you. I could never replace you.”

She held the baby tighter as tears gathered in her eyes.

“But Noah is innocent. If you cannot accept us, I will leave New York. I only ask that Vincent allow me to tell him who his father is someday.”

Vincent’s face hardened.

“No one is leaving.”

He turned to me, authority entering his voice.

“The child has done nothing to you, Sophia.”

“Neither has his mother?”

“Isabella has been through enough.”

His answer came without hesitation.

His parents hurried over before I could respond.

Mrs. Moreau took my hand.

“Noah’s birth was not planned, but the Moreau family cannot abandon its own blood. Isabella will never have your name or your position. You will always be Vincent’s lawful wife.”

Mr. Moreau lowered his voice.

“You have only recently awakened, so some emotional distress is understandable. But every important family in New York is represented here tonight. Do not allow private feelings to damage the Moreau name.”

No one asked what I wanted.

They only told me what I would be allowed to keep if I behaved.

My title. My home. My place beside a man who had created another family while I lay unconscious.

I smiled.

“Relax. If I intended to ruin the christening, we wouldn’t still be talking.”

I opened my handbag and removed a midnight-blue velvet box.

Vincent’s shoulders tensed. Isabella stepped back, holding Noah against her chest.

I opened it with one hand.

A hand-engraved silver guardian angel rested against white satin, beside embossed documents establishing an education fund in Noah’s name.

I placed the open box inside the lace-lined crib.

“May you grow up safe and healthy.”

The people around us stared at me.

Vincent studied my face, searching for the anger he knew how to control.

“You’re not angry?”

“A child shouldn’t have to pay for the decisions his parents made.”

Isabella’s smile faltered.

I straightened the silver medal against the white lace before looking at her.

“You gave the Moreau family another heir. Today belongs to you and your son.”

Then I turned to Vincent.

“Continue. I’d hate to disappoint everyone by behaving.”

His eyes darkened.

“Sophia.”

Once, that warning would have started a fight.

Tonight, I held his gaze for one deliberate second, then turned my back on him.

No one tried to stop me.

The ballroom doors closed behind me, muffling the music. I descended the white marble steps and crossed the floodlit valet court without looking back.

By the time I reached the car, the jeweled clasp of my clutch had cut a red crescent into my palm. My hand was trembling, so I closed it into a fist before Camille reached me.

Camille hurried after me.

“Sophia, wait.”

She caught my arm beside the car.

“What happened to you? Vincent had a child with another woman while you were unconscious, and you congratulated them.”

I opened the car door.

“The old me still believed making a scene could force Vincent to choose me.”

Camille followed me into the back seat.

“What does that mean?”

I looked through the window at the glowing ballroom.

I had loved Vincent since I was fifteen. I had given him ten years of my life, then lost three more saving his.

When I finally opened my eyes, he had another woman, another child, and an entire life that no longer needed me.

Yet everyone still expected me to fight for my place beside him.

“I stopped fighting for Vincent in that crash.”

Camille went quiet.

After a moment, she asked, “What are you going to do?”

My phone vibrated.

The message came from my attorney.

[The divorce papers and financial separation documents are ready. Everything will be completed in seven days. Your one-way flight has been confirmed.]

I read the message once before locking the screen.

“Are you really divorcing him?” Camille asked.

“Yes.”

“Does Vincent know?”

“Not yet.”

Vincent mistook my silence for acceptance. He assumed I would return to the estate and forgive him because I always had.

He had spent ten years learning how to control my anger.

He had no idea what to do once I no longer wanted anything from him.

In seven days, the divorce papers would be delivered.

In seven days, my flight would leave New York.

By the time Vincent understood that I was not trying to frighten him, punish him, or force him to choose me, I would already be gone.

The final Bellamy attack began at midnight.I sat with Victor in the Boston operations room, facing a wall of screens. Each displayed a different Moreau asset. At twelve fifteen, Bellamy security entered two warehouses leased through Vincent’s shell companies. The guards surrendered after learning their wages had not been paid.At twelve thirty, the private bank processing Moreau casino revenue suspended every account connected to the family. At one, Arthur Wynn delivered the original financial ledgers to federal investigators. At one twenty, four Moreau captains signed an agreement withdrawing their men from Vincent’s command.By two, the empire Vincent had spent his life controlling could no longer move money, weapons, or people without Bellamy permission.Victor watched me authorize each action. “Do you want me to finish it?”“No.” I selected the final file. “I want him awake when it happens.”We returned to New York before sunrise. The Moreau headquarters was surrounded by black Be

The Moreau council met in a private Manhattan hotel two days later. The building was neutral territory. No weapons were allowed beyond the entrance, and every major East Coast family had sent a representative.Victor entered beside me. Eleanor remained in Boston, but she called before we left.“You do not have to prove anything to them,” she said.“I’m not going for them.”Vincent was already inside when we arrived. He sat at the head of the table, dressed in black, his expression perfectly controlled. Only the untouched coffee beside him revealed that he had been there for hours.Isabella sat several seats away with her injured hand bandaged. Her face changed when she saw me.Vincent’s gaze moved to the fading bruises above my collar. His fingers tightened around the arm of his chair, but he said nothing. The council chairman opened the meeting. “Don Moreau, your private decisions have exposed shared operations, compromised law enforcement contacts, and disrupted business across three

Vincent returned to New York that night. By morning, he had ordered every Moreau captain to reroute shipments around Bellamy territory. He moved cash from legitimate companies, contacted alternative insurers, and threatened anyone who hesitated to obey.None of it surprised me. I had watched him manage the Moreau empire for ten years. Vincent responded to pressure by tightening his control. The harder people resisted, the more certain he became that absolute obedience would solve the problem. He still believed this was Victor’s war. He did not know I had spent the night studying every Moreau company connected to New England.Victor entered the library shortly after breakfast and found the table covered in financial reports.“You should sleep.”“I know where Vincent will move the money.”He picked up the list I had made. The first page contained the names of seven shell corporations. The second showed the warehouses Vincent used when official ports became unavailable. The third identifi

Vincent remained outside the gates for nearly an hour. He called Daniel twice, Marco six times, and the Bellamy estate directly until the security office stopped answering.I watched him through the upstairs window. Even from a distance, I recognized the rigid line of his shoulders. Vincent did not know how to wait for permission. He had built his entire life around the certainty that other people would eventually obey.Eleanor stood beside me. “You don’t have to see him.”“I know.”That was precisely why I decided to go downstairs.Victor received Vincent in a formal sitting room instead of the private rooms used by the family. Two Bellamy guards remained near the door.Vincent stood when I entered. His gaze moved over me quickly, checking my face, my hands, and the way I favored my injured side. Relief appeared first. Then anger covered it.“You look terrible.”I sat across from him. “You always know exactly what to say.”He ignored the remark. “We’re going back to New York. My docto

The Bellamy retaliation began before sunrise.By eight the next morning, three Moreau shipments had been denied entry at Boston Harbor. Two insurance companies canceled coverage on vessels connected to Vincent’s shell corporations. A private bank demanded immediate repayment of a sixty-million-dollar credit line.At nine, Victor’s chief financial officer entered the breakfast room with another report. “The Moreau accounts in Providence and Hartford are temporarily frozen. Their attorneys are challenging the order.”Victor continued drinking his coffee. “Let them.”I sat across from him, reading the documents. The attacks were precise. No innocent employees had been targeted, and no legitimate Moreau business had been destroyed without cause. Victor had struck only the companies Vincent used to move money, weapons, and influence through Bellamy territory.“You did all this overnight?” I asked.“We have been controlling these ports longer than Vincent has been alive.” Victor set down his
