Chapter 4

Author: Heliotrope
Apollo stared at me, all the color gone from his face. Then he leaned close enough that only I could hear him over the chaos of servants lifting the broken cups.

"Funny," he whispered. "That was not who you chose last time."

For a moment, the terrace became as cold as the Underworld.

Apollo remembered.

I didn’t let my face change. If he wanted fear, he would not get it from me. I turned to Cassian and kept my hand in his, letting all Olympus see the choice was real.

The whispers came first, then outrage.

"Cassian?"

"The Hadeion heir?"

"Persephone was supposed to choose Apollo. Everyone knew it."

Apollo forced a laugh. "Father of gods, there has been a mistake. Persephone is angry with me and using Cassian to punish me."

Zeus's eyes hardened. "Do not tell me what my daughter means."

"Ask her, then." Apollo looked at me as if command alone could drag love back into my body. "Tell them. You chose me."

"I chose Cassian," I said. "I said it clearly."

Cassian's fingers tightened around mine. He had expected pity, perhaps strategy, never this certainty. That small surprise in his eyes made my chest soften.

Apollo grabbed for my wrist. Cassian moved before the guards did, placing himself between us. His voice was quiet. "Do not touch her."

Apollo's face twisted. "And what will you do? Drag me into the dark? You are a broken relic from a dead throne."

A crack of thunder rolled above the terrace. Zeus lifted his staff just enough to silence the entire court.

"Apollo Olympion," he said, "you have forgotten yourself. From tonight, you will not enter the sun council, command the eastern guards, or speak for my house until I decide you have learned restraint."

Apollo stared as if he had never imagined consequence could reach him. "You would punish me for her temper?"

"I punish you for insulting my chosen heir at my own table."

Celeste tried to rise from her chair, pale and shaking. "Apollo only loves her too much. Please do not blame him."

I looked at her. "He is yours if you want him. I am done fighting for a man who runs wherever you cough."

Her tears stopped for half a breath.

Zeus waved his hand, and servants cleared the broken crystal. Music returned, stiff and nervous, but the night had changed. Courtiers who had spent years bowing toward Apollo now turned their smiles toward Cassian. I watched one priestess take a garland of golden laurel from Apollo's chair and send a page running after Cassian with it. Gifts meant for the sun heir were quietly redirected to the shadow wing before the feast ended.

Apollo noticed every shift. The more people stepped around the spilled nectar to congratulate Cassian, the more his pride cracked. He kept looking at me, not with love, but with the panic of a man watching a throne move out from under him.

Later, on the balcony, Cassian stood beside me while the cloud sea rolled under the rail.

"You heard what Apollo said," I murmured.

"About last time? I do not know what he meant," Cassian said. "But I know he frightened you."

"He didn’t frighten me. He reminded me."

Cassian studied me without pushing. "If you regret choosing me, I can ask Zeus to release you before the wedding."

"I do not regret it."

"You loved him once."

"I loved a version of him I invented. That man never existed."

The wind lifted the edge of Cassian's cloak. For one brief second, I saw the scarred base of a dark wing beneath it. He caught the fabric before I could look away, and shame crossed his face.

"Do not," I said softly. "I am not afraid of what they broke."

He was silent for a long moment. Then he took a sealed folder from inside his coat. "Zeus gives you the thunder vaults. I will give you what remains of Hades's estate. The lower temples, the black fields, the river rights, all of it. If I ever wrong you, take everything and leave me with nothing."

In my last life, Apollo had taken all I gave and called it his birthright.

I accepted the folder, then removed the small green pendant at my throat. It had belonged to my mother, a seed pearl carved with spring vines. I had once given it to Apollo. He later used it to decorate Celeste's comb.

This time, I placed it in Cassian's palm. "Then keep this for me."

He held it like a holy thing. "I will not let you regret choosing me."

Apollo gripped the gate as if iron alone kept him from falling."I was your husband," he said. "In the last life, I mean. We were not always miserable. There were days when you smiled at me. There were nights when you waited for me. You cannot tell me none of it mattered.""It mattered," I said. "That was why it killed me."His eyes reddened. "I didn’t understand then. I thought you would always stay. I thought your love was part of the world, like sunrise.""So you stopped being grateful for it.""I was foolish. Cruel. I know that now. Tell Cassian to help me, and I will leave Olympus. I will never trouble you again."I stepped closer to the gate. "Do you remember the healer's hall?"He flinched."Do you remember replacing my medicine with poison because Celeste told you I wanted her dead? Do you remember hearing I was bleeding and choosing a banquet instead? Do you remember our child dying before taking one breath?"Apollo's hands slid down the bars. "Stop.""No. You wanted to talk.

Months passed, and Olympus changed its prayers quickly. The same courtiers who had called Cassian a shadow began sending him tribute in silver bowls. The brothers who once mocked his wings asked for places in his council. Cassian accepted the useful ones, refused the rest, and never wasted anger on men who had already revealed their worth.Cassian tasted every cup before I drank and changed half the guards around our chambers after I was pregnent."You are making the palace nervous," I told him one night. He rested his hand gently over my belly. "Good. Nervous people make fewer bold mistakes."Our child kicked. He looked so startled that I laughed for the first time that day."She knows your voice," I said."She has excellent judgment."Those small moments healed more than grand vows ever could. Apollo had once filled rooms with speeches and left me starving. Cassian remembered medicines, meals, closed windows, and which flowers made me tired. He learned which healers I trusted and whi

On the morning of my wedding, Cassian came to Demeter's gate before dawn.He wore black and silver instead of bridal white. The underworld horses waiting behind him breathed mist across the grass, and the carriage lanterns burned with blue flame. He offered his hand. "Ready?"In my last life, I rode to my wedding terrified that Apollo would change his mind. This time, I stepped into the carriage feeling steady. We had almost reached the marble bridge to Zeus's court when the horses stopped.Apollo stood in the road wearing a groom's white mantle and a sun crest that didn’t belong to him. His hair was unbound, his eyes bloodshot, and in his hand he held a narrow ceremonial blade.Cassian stepped down first. I caught his sleeve. "Let me speak. If you fight him here, every bard in Olympus will sing about it by noon.""Then let them sing that we faced trouble together." He took my hand and didn’t release it.Apollo saw our joined hands, and something in his face broke. "Persephone, come wi

Celeste was waiting in Demeter's garden when I returned.Moonlight silvered the glass roof, and the flowers around her had closed for the night. Without Apollo beside her, she looked less like a sacred blossom and more like a girl whose tricks had stopped working."You are cleverer than I thought," she said. "Choosing Cassian to provoke Apollo was bold."I walked past her. "Go to bed, Celeste."She followed. "Do you truly think the Hadeion can satisfy you? His blood smells of tombs, his wings are ruined, and Olympus will never love him. You will spend your life beside a shadow while Apollo still burns for me.""Then enjoy the heat."The garden doors flew open before she could answer. Apollo strode in with his laurel crown crooked and his ceremonial robe half-fastened, as if he had run from one end of Olympus to the other. Servants gathered at the edges of the hall.Celeste brightened at once. "Apollo, did you come for me? I knew you would not let them shame us."He pushed past her so h

The Moonfall Festival came three weeks later, and Zeus turned Olympus into a theater of light. The great terrace floated above the cloud sea. Bronze torches burned without smoke, musicians played beneath columns wrapped in laurel, and a tower of crystal cups rose beside the central fountain, each cup filled with pale nectar that shimmered like captured stars. Doves of light circled the upper balconies, and the daughters of the old sea houses trailed silk over the marble steps. Every noble house had come to watch the oath finally become a betrothal. They expected a clean triumph for Apollo. The Sun Court had already placed golden ribbons on its banners, and several courtiers had begun whispering about which chambers I would occupy after marriage, as if my life had been arranged by people who had never asked me a single question.I entered with Demeter's gifts and found Celeste waiting by the fountain. She wore pearls, dawnstones, and a golden girdle I recognized from Apollo's private tr
