Chapter 4

Autor: Fortune Paws
Barney’s expression stiffened.

I did not wait to hear what he had to say. I picked up my tray and walked away.

Back at the dorm, I crawled into bed for a nap.

I had no idea how long I had been asleep when my phone’s constant buzzing woke me up.

The messages were from the family group chat.

Tracey had sent a long apology.

[Helen, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have taken your steak. I didn’t realize it would upset you so much.]

Mom was quick to comfort her.

[Don’t let it get to you, Tracey. Your sister’s always been a little petty.]

Dad tagged me next.

[@Helen it was one steak. She’s your sister. Did you really have to make a scene?]

Barney was more direct.

[Selfish, mean, always keeping score. You’re getting worse by the day.]

Ethan blamed me too.

[Helen, you didn’t use to be so difficult.]

They would have thought twice before saying those harsh things to a stranger. Yet my family and the man I had loved for years had no trouble saying them to me.

A little later, Ethan sent another message.

[Tracey, don’t feel bad. Let’s talk about something fun. You’ve always wanted an island vacation, right? I’ve booked three photo shoots for spring break.]

Mom and Dad offered to pay for the hotel, while Barney booked the flights.

Tracey tagged me, clearly delighted.

[Come with us, Helen! It’ll be a trip for the four of us.]

Dad chimed in.

[Of course she’s coming. We treat you girls equally, so Helen can go with you.]

Then I opened the booking screenshots they had posted.

Each of the three photo shoots was booked for one person.

The first-class tickets had only three names on them. They were Barney, Ethan, and Tracey.

As for the hotel, they had booked a suite with three bedrooms.

They had never made room for me.

I was done pretending otherwise.

[The photo shoots are for one person. There are only three plane tickets and three bedrooms. So where exactly do I fit into this trip?]

No sooner had I sent the message than a voice message from Barney came through.

He sounded furious.

“Helen, will you give it a rest? Tracey was nice enough to invite you. If you don’t want to come, fine, but you don’t have to be so snide about it.”

Ethan sent a message too.

[Tracey had a rough day, so we wanted to make it up to her. Besides, didn’t Mr. and Mrs. Darrow give you money for a spring break trip? Just book your own flight and hotel room.]

I had already explained once. I was not going to do it again, so I sent a simple reply.

[I’m not going.]

That afternoon, Barney and Ethan each messaged me privately.

They said Tracey had felt guilty about what had happened at lunch and would not stop insisting that I come along.

The three of them had pooled their money to book my flight and hotel room, they said.

Barney even sent me a screenshot of the booking, with the important details covered up.

However, he had forgotten one thing.

A ticket booked in my name came with a confirmation text.

The message from the train company showed what they had actually bought me. It was a coach seat for a thirteen-hour train ride. There was no flight.

They had booked me a room, at least.

It was at a $70-a-night motel near the five-star hotel where they were staying.

At that price during spring break, I could imagine what the place would be like.

I did not reply. As usual, they took my silence for a yes.

Over the next two weeks, they kept sending me shopping lists.

[Helen, remember to get two bottles of bug spray.]

[Bring some sunscreen too. The sun’s strong at the beach.]

[Oh, and pick up some beach towels and motion sickness pills.]

Whenever I took a little too long to reply, Barney would complain.

[We paid for your train ticket and hotel room. Is it too much to ask you to pick up a few things?]

Ethan took it as a matter of course too.

[You’ll be using this stuff too.]

I looked at the total in my online cart and did not bother arguing like I used to.

I would be leaving in a few days anyway, so I simply said yes to everything they asked for.

That did not mean I was buying any of it.

On the first day of spring break, the three of them headed to the airport early.

Tracey posted a photo of herself boarding the plane in the family group chat.

[We’re off!]

Barney replied, [We’ll check into the hotel when we land, then have dinner together once Helen gets there by train.]

Ethan replied with a simple, [sounds good.]

None of them asked what time my thirteen-hour train ride was supposed to arrive.

So none of them knew that I was at the airport too. I was wheeling my suitcase through check-in behind the program coordinator and the other exchange students.

Two hours after their plane took off, my flight departed from another runway, carrying me out of the country.

  • I Was Sent Out Of The Country   Chapter 10

Back in school, I threw myself into physics.I still posted on my account, but less and less often. When followers asked for an update, I would post a photo from the lab.[Busy with a research project. I’ll post when I can.]Sponsorship offers filled my inbox, but I only accepted a few that felt right. Most days, I was in the lab collecting and analyzing data with my professor while preparing my applications for graduate school. When my professor asked what I wanted to do next, I answered without hesitation for the first time.“I want to be a researcher.”For so long, I had chased every paycheck just to survive.I could finally afford to pursue what I loved.Mom, Dad, and Barney still would not leave me alone. They kept messaging me from different numbers.[Helen, you’re so busy now. Why let your account sit idle when Barney could run it for you?][We’re family. You know we’d never do anything to hurt you.][Don’t be stubborn. Opportunities to make this kind of money won’

Mom stared at the scholarship email. It took her a while to speak.“But research is such hard work.”Dad frowned, clearly unconvinced.“You could make money much faster online. Audiences move on. Now’s the time to make the most of yours.”Barney tried to reason with me.“Helen, we’re looking out for you. Stop assuming the worst of your own family.”I looked at them and smiled.“Research has never made me as miserable as being your family.”The smiles vanished from their faces.I turned away and wheeled my suitcase toward the airport exit.I had almost reached the doors when Ethan hurried after me and stepped into my path.“Helen, I’m not like them. They came because of your account. I came because of you.”I stopped and looked at the face I had loved for more than ten years. In the past, I thought he was a perfect guy. But his sincerity at present looked like an act. The sight of him made my stomach turn.Ethan seemed to think I still saw him the way I used to.He moved

As my year abroad drew to a close, my suitcase was much heavier than when I had arrived.Inside were a memory book from my labmates, a recommendation letter my professor had written for me, and an invitation to join a summer research program. My account had accumulated a million followers. I was earning more from ads than I had ever imagined. It was early evening when my flight landed back home.I wheeled my suitcase through arrivals and immediately spotted four familiar faces in the crowd.Mom held an enormous bouquet.Dad carried a gift box.Several shopping bags sat at Barney’s feet, while Ethan had his hands full too.Mom reached me first and tried to press the flowers into my arms.“Helen, you’ve lost weight. You look beautiful.”I glanced at the flowers.Pink roses. Tracey’s favorites.I did not take them. “I’m allergic to pollen.”Mom’s smile faltered.Dad quickly held out his gift box.“Forget the flowers. We’re just glad you’re home. I got you a watch. You’re al

The next few months flew by.I settled in faster than I had expected. At first, I struggled to follow some of the terms in my lectures. I read ahead before class, then replayed the recordings late into the night. One day in physics class, the professor filled the board with equations and asked if anyone could work out the final step. The room stayed quiet for a few seconds.I raised my hand and carefully walked the class through my solution in halting English. He smiled at me.“Helen, could you stay behind after class?”When everyone else had left, he handed me an application for a lab assistant position.“That was an elegant solution. Would you be interested in working in my lab?”I wanted to jump for joy, but I managed to nod calmly.“Absolutely.”My scholarship and lab stipend came through soon after.Even so, rent, transportation, and insurance added up fast.I kept working outside of class.Nobody wanted the late shifts at the convenience store, so I took them and wo

I had already answered that question once. I did not owe him the same answer again.Besides, he must have known the truth, or he would not have asked. So I hung up.A little later, Ethan sent me a message.[I checked. You really didn’t get a cent.]Then a message from Tracey appeared.[What did you say to Ethan?][He just blew up at everyone. We were having a nice time, and now you’ve ruined the whole trip.]Mom soon messaged me too.[Helen, when are you going to grow up?][You’re off overseas while the rest of us are left dealing with this mess. Did you have to start a family fight?]Barney had never had much patience with me. He sent a voice message. When I played it, I could hear him struggling to keep his temper.“You’ve really outdone yourself, Helen. Ethan just demanded to see my credit card account and made Mom and Dad show him their bank transfers. Now Tracey’s in tears. Happy?”Between all their messages, I pieced together what had happened. After I hung up, Eth

We landed just after dawn.I cleared immigration with the program coordinator, then took a bus to the host university. Nearly an hour passed before I finally had a chance to check my phone. There were dozens of unread messages in the family group chat. The first was from Barney.[Helen, wasn’t your train supposed to be in by now?]A few minutes later, he had sent another.[The hotel says you haven’t checked in. Where are you?]Ethan’s message came next.[Helen, stop sulking. Everyone’s waiting for you so we can have dinner. You’re ruining the mood.]Then Mom and Dad joined in.[Your sister’s been asking about you all day. Don’t make her worry.][We’re family. Why can’t we just talk this out?]Reading their messages, I suddenly felt drained. The exhaustion from more than ten hours in the air seemed to catch up with me all at once.I leaned against the door frame of my new dorm room and typed a reply.[Don’t wait for me. I’m overseas with the university’s exchange program.
