Chapter 2

Author: Angel's City
Late that night, the clinic was as cold as a meat locker.

Cassius walked in, carrying the deep winter chill with him.

He came up behind me, rested his warm hands on my shoulders, and kissed the side of my neck.

"Still mad about yesterday?" His voice was rough with exhaustion, and he was clearly trying to make peace.

Before, I would have leaned back against him and soaked up every second of his attention.

But tonight, I turned my head away from his touch.

Cassius froze.

"Yesterday was an emergency." He gripped my chin and forced me to face him. "Didn't I come straight back to you the moment I was done?" He sounded faintly exasperated. "Sierra, you're my wife. I need you to be more understanding."

I knocked his hand away, my eyes stinging.

"Cassius, I'm your wife, not some pet you can abandon whenever you please and soothe whenever you decide to come back."

He stared at me for five full seconds. Then his eyes softened, as if he were pleased by my anger.

"I'm sorry. I've been neglecting you. I'll have Luca clear my schedule tomorrow, and we'll spend the whole day at home. How's that?"

His warm chest pressed against my back, and his familiar scent surrounded me.

He'd held me like this when he told me he loved me, and again when he proposed. He'd called me his treasure and thanked me for becoming his wife. Even now, he still buried his face in the curve of my neck like he couldn't get enough of me.

Maybe he'd never meant to hurt me.

I hesitated, took a deep breath, and laid a hand over my flat stomach without thinking.

"Cassius, actually, I..."

Just as I was about to tell him, the personal phone in his pocket rang. I knew that ringtone. It was reserved for Mia's security team.

Cassius tensed at once.

A bodyguard's panicked voice came through the line. "Don, Ms. Russo is having another panic attack! She locked herself in the bathroom with a piece of broken glass, and she keeps calling your name..."

Cassius's expression tightened.

"Break the door down. I'll be there in ten minutes."

He ended the call and grabbed his coat before turning to me. "Something's come up with Mia. I have to go."

"Cassius." I stepped forward and caught the hem of his coat. "I really have something important to tell you..."

"Sierra," he cut in with a frown. "You can take care of yourself. Mia can't. I have to go."

He gave me a long look, then brushed my hand aside and walked out of the clinic.

The steel door shut again, and every bit of his warmth went with it.

I was cold all over.

Mia had panic attacks every so often, and I knew she was using them to lure Cassius away. Too bad he couldn't see it.

Whenever I questioned her, he'd shake his head in annoyance. "Sierra, she's not that bad."

As if I were the one out to hurt her.

I sank into my desk chair, opened the bottom drawer, and pulled out an ultrasound printout I'd kept pressed flat.

A tiny shadow curled up in the black-and-white image.

Ten weeks old.

I was pregnant.

In his world, I would always be a fortress, strong enough to take care of myself. Mia would always be the fragile one he had to save.

I picked up a lighter and set the ultrasound printout on fire.

The flames glowed red in my eyes.

Cassius, if you think I don't need you, then you don't deserve to know about the baby either.

Alexander smiled, genuine hope shining in his blue eyes.I looked at him, and for the first time in a year, I felt myself relax. "Yes."Another three months passed. At the forum in Paris, I gave a talk on the latest advances in my field and received a standing ovation. Sierra’s POVCassius didn't approach me again. He was patient and calculating, so he changed tactics.Over the next three days, the research center underwent a series of changes. An anonymous donation of 50 million euros suddenly appeared in the hospital's account.Next, ten pieces of state-of-the-art medical equipment were flown directly to the hospital, with explicit instructions that they be assigned to my department.Every morning when I arrived at my office, a warm oat milk latte waited on my desk. Back at the clinic, it was the only drink he'd let me have after I'd spent all night operating.Everyone knew who was behind it all. After that day, Cassius stopped confronting me. Instead, he relied on the methods he knew best: throwing money around, applying pressure, and flaunting his power. His message was clear: he still controlled everything.I took all of it.Those machines could save many lives. I had no reason to turn them down over a personal grudge. On Friday evening, I had j

Sierra’s POVZurich, Switzerland.Wearing a camel cashmere coat and carrying two hot coffees, I hurried along the tree-lined path outside the medical research center at ETH Zurich.December's first snow had just fallen in Zurich, and the air was cold and clean."Sierra, you haven't fully recovered yet. Be careful not to slip."A warm voice called from behind me. Alexander Keller, dressed in a charcoal trench coat, caught up to me in a few long strides and took one of the coffees as if it were the most natural thing in the world. He was the largest investor in one of Europe's leading medical research centers. He was also the only person who had reached out to help me since I arrived in Switzerland.I'd arrived in Europe a week earlier, still weak from the miscarriage. After reading my published research papers, Alexander had made an exception and offered me a place on his team. He'd also arranged for me to receive the best medical care available while I recovered. He never pried into my

She bribed two of our bodyguards to plant a mechanical timer that made a ticking sound beneath it."Luca swallowed, and his voice shook. "When the Donna called you for help, Ms. Russo secretly activated a signal jammer. That's why the call dropped."Crack.The whiskey glass shattered in Cassius's hand.Sharp shards dug into his palm, and blood dripped between his fingers onto the black walnut desk. He seemed not to feel it.Sierra's desperate cry on the phone rang in his ears again. "Cassius, I'm pregnant! I'm bleeding so much..."And what had he been doing? He had sat in an armored car and turned his back on his wife as she begged for help, all because of a fake ticking sound. He'd killed his only child and driven the wife who had always been calm and strong to the

Cassius’s POVEarly the next morning, Cassius met Luca in the study.Luca looked terrible. He was holding a thick manila envelope, and a fine sheen of cold sweat covered his forehead."Don..." Luca's voice trembled as he set the envelope on the wide desk.Cassius didn't look at it. He took a sip of coffee. "Did you deal with the doctor who faked the record?" he asked coldly.Luca swallowed and forced out the words. "Don... the record is real."Cassius froze, his coffee cup halfway to his mouth."What did you say?"Luca took a deep breath and emptied the envelope onto the desk.Inside was a thick stack of medical records, a few ER photos, and a flash drive containing security footage."We reviewed the downtown hospital's security footage and checked the blood bank records." Luca lowered his head, unable to meet Cassius's eyes. "The Donna... she was brought into the ER last night. She'd lost more than three pints of blood and was already in shock when they admitted her. The baby... they

Cassius’s POVThe Vitelli family's bomb experts spent three hours searching the Rolls-Royce inside and out. They checked it three times. There was no bomb. The supposed ticking had come from an alarm clock someone had placed under the car. No one knew who had put it there.Cassius stood outside the cordon, the night wind tugging at his black coat.
