Chapter 1

"I'm taking Luca to the East Side to bring Mia back. She's alone at the safe house, and I don't like it."

His face was pale with pain, but his voice remained low and steady.

I tossed the bloody gauze into the medical waste bin and turned to him with a cold laugh. "The East Side is a battleground for the Salvatore family right now. If you go, you'll tear your stitches."

Cassius froze.

His dark eyes locked on mine. His voice softened, but it left no room for argument. "Marco took a bullet for me and died. I'm never letting his sister get hurt. Sierra, stop being difficult."

He gave a soft sigh, as if I were merely pouting for his attention.

Just then, the heavy bulletproof door of the clinic swung open.

Luca Marino, Cassius's right-hand man, entered with several heavily armed bodyguards surrounding a young woman in a white cashmere coat.

The moment Mia saw Cassius, her eyes filled with tears. She threw herself into his arms as if she'd finally come home.

"Cassius... there's gunfire everywhere out there. They said someone's trying to kill me..."

The tension left Cassius's jaw. He didn't push her away. With the same hand he'd used to sign the divorce papers, he gently patted her back.

"It's okay," he said, his voice low. "I'm here. No one's going to touch you."

His face was calm and tender, full of patience and indulgence.

Too bad none of that tenderness was ever meant for me.

Mia leaned against his chest and glanced at me over his shoulder. There was nothing fragile in her eyes. She looked almost amused, as though she saw me as a rival who posed no threat.

"Dr. Hale," Mia said with a smirk, "the Don's time is valuable. Since the surgery's done, I'll take him off your hands. Thanks so much."

I gave her a cold look. "If you know he's just had surgery, you shouldn't be rubbing yourself against him wearing that much perfume. You could cause an infection."

Mia's face soured.

She tugged at Cassius's sleeve, eyes lowered. "Cassius, I was just so worried about you... I didn't mean to."

"Sierra." Cassius frowned and moved Mia behind him, a warning in his eyes. "She's had a scare. Why are you being so mean to her?"

He lowered his voice. "You're just a private doctor. Remember your place."

Remember my place?

His words hit me like a punch.

When he'd proposed to me, his eyes had been red-rimmed. "I'm sorry I can't tell the world about you. It would put you in danger. But I'll never forget that you're my wife."

He'd looked as humble as a sinner at confession.

I wrapped my arms around him and made him a solemn promise. "Yes, I will."

I just never imagined that one day, he'd forget who I was to him.

Once Mia and Luca had gone, it was just Cassius and me in the clinic. He turned to me and started to say something, then didn't.

After a long moment, he reached out and squeezed my shoulder. "Close the clinic for a few days. If you need anything, make a list for Luca. I'll get her settled, then come back tomorrow night and spend time with you."

Then he left.

The heavy steel door slowly swung shut, taking the strong smell of cigars and Mia's sickly sweet perfume with it.

I went to the sink, turned on the cold water, and scrubbed his blood from my fingers. The plain silver band dug uncomfortably into my left ring finger.

14 days to go.

I shut off the tap, yanked the ring from my finger, and hurled it into the medical waste bin.

Sierra’s POVCassius stood on the terrace, staring blankly ahead. He didn't try to stop me again. The next day, Cassius disappeared from Zurich as suddenly as he had appeared. The only traces he left were the institute's new equipment and the unused investment funds in its account.Alexander rushed back from New York. He didn't ask any questions. He simply secured new funding for me and invited me to dinner."Sierra, there's an international surgical forum in Paris in three months. Would you like to go with me?" Alexander smiled, genuine hope shining in his blue eyes.I looked at him, and for the first time in a year, I felt myself relax. "Yes."Another three months passed. At the forum in Paris, I gave a talk on the latest advances in my field and received a standing ovation. Alexander sat in the front row, his eyes full of pride and love as he watched me.After I stepped down from the podium, my phone buzzed with a news alert from New York."Breaking News: Vitelli Family's Money-Laun

Sierra’s POVCassius didn't approach me again. He was patient and calculating, so he changed tactics.Over the next three days, the research center underwent a series of changes. An anonymous donation of 50 million euros suddenly appeared in the hospital's account.Next, ten pieces of state-of-the-art medical equipment were flown directly to the hospital, with explicit instructions that they be assigned to my department.Every morning when I arrived at my office, a warm oat milk latte waited on my desk. Back at the clinic, it was the only drink he'd let me have after I'd spent all night operating.Everyone knew who was behind it all. After that day, Cassius stopped confronting me. Instead, he relied on the methods he knew best: throwing money around, applying pressure, and flaunting his power. His message was clear: he still controlled everything.I took all of it.Those machines could save many lives. I had no reason to turn them down over a personal grudge. On Friday evening, I had j

Sierra’s POVZurich, Switzerland.Wearing a camel cashmere coat and carrying two hot coffees, I hurried along the tree-lined path outside the medical research center at ETH Zurich.December's first snow had just fallen in Zurich, and the air was cold and clean."Sierra, you haven't fully recovered yet. Be careful not to slip."A warm voice called from behind me. Alexander Keller, dressed in a charcoal trench coat, caught up to me in a few long strides and took one of the coffees as if it were the most natural thing in the world. He was the largest investor in one of Europe's leading medical research centers. He was also the only person who had reached out to help me since I arrived in Switzerland.I'd arrived in Europe a week earlier, still weak from the miscarriage. After reading my published research papers, Alexander had made an exception and offered me a place on his team. He'd also arranged for me to receive the best medical care available while I recovered. He never pried into my

Cassius’s POV"The Salvatore family caused the explosion that day, but the clinic's location had been sent to them from Ms. Russo's device."Cold sweat covered Luca's forehead."There was never a bomb under Ms. Russo's car. She bribed two of our bodyguards to plant a mechanical timer that made a ticking sound beneath it."Luca swallowed, and his voice shook. "When the Donna called you for help, Ms. Russo secretly activated a signal jammer. That's why the call dropped."Crack.The whiskey glass shattered in Cassius's hand.Sharp shards dug into his palm, and blood dripped between his fingers onto the black walnut desk. He seemed not to feel it.Sierra's desperate cry on the phone rang in his ears again. "Cassius, I'm pregnant! I'm bleeding so much..."And what had he been doing? He had sat in an armored car and turned his back on his wife as she begged for help, all because of a fake ticking sound. He'd killed his only child and driven the wife who had always been calm and strong to the

Cassius’s POVEarly the next morning, Cassius met Luca in the study.Luca looked terrible. He was holding a thick manila envelope, and a fine sheen of cold sweat covered his forehead."Don..." Luca's voice trembled as he set the envelope on the wide desk.Cassius didn't look at it. He took a sip of coffee. "Did you deal with the doctor who faked the record?" he asked coldly.Luca swallowed and forced out the words. "Don... the record is real."Cassius froze, his coffee cup halfway to his mouth."What did you say?"Luca took a deep breath and emptied the envelope onto the desk.Inside was a thick stack of medical records, a few ER photos, and a flash drive containing security footage."We reviewed the downtown hospital's security footage and checked the blood bank records." Luca lowered his head, unable to meet Cassius's eyes. "The Donna... she was brought into the ER last night. She'd lost more than three pints of blood and was already in shock when they admitted her. The baby... they

Cassius’s POVThe Vitelli family's bomb experts spent three hours searching the Rolls-Royce inside and out. They checked it three times. There was no bomb. The supposed ticking had come from an alarm clock someone had placed under the car. No one knew who had put it there.Cassius stood outside the cordon, the night wind tugging at his black coat. He listened to Luca's report without a flicker of expression."Pack it up," he ordered calmly.Mia walked over, wrapped in a thick cashmere shawl. I thought I'd never see you again."Her voice trembled as if she had truly escaped death.Cassius didn't push her away, but he quietly pulled his arm free."Luca will take you back to the safe house. Don't go out for a few days." His voice was low and left no room for argument."But you...""I have something to take care of."He didn't look at Mia again. He turned an
