Amelia stared at the message until the words blurred,Positive,Her baby.Damian’s baby.

For a moment, the noise around her faded into nothing. The applause, the cameras, the whispers—none of it seemed real anymore.

She pressed her phone against her palm and forced herself to breathe.

She couldn’t fall apart here. Not in front of them,Not in front of Damian.Especially not after he had just humiliated her in front of half of New York.

“Amelia.”Her name came from behind her.She knew the voice, she turned slowly.Damian was standing a few feet away, alone.Sophia remained on the stage, surrounded by reporters. His expression was unreadable.“Come with me.”Amelia almost laughed. After announcing another woman’s pregnancy, he still expected her to obey him?

“Why?”His jaw tightened.“We need to talk.”

“We’ve had five years to talk.”His eyes narrowed.“This isn’t the place.”Amelia looked around the ballroom.“You’re right.”She gestured toward the stage.“This is apparently the place to announce your relationship.”

A flicker of something crossed his face.

Guilt?

Amelia couldn’t tell.“Amelia—”

“Congratulations.”

The word came out surprisingly steady.Damian stared at her.“You don’t have to pretend.”

“I’ve been pretending for five years.”Her voice cracked slightly.“I think I’m finally tired.”

For the first time, Damian looked unsettled. His gaze dropped to the ring on her finger. The ring he had given her on their wedding day.

“Take it off.”

Amelia froze.

“What?”

“The ring.”

He spoke quietly.“If you’re going to walk away, then don’t leave anything behind that will bring you back.”Something inside her went completely still. She looked at the ring, then at him.Five years, five years of waiting for this man to look at her like she mattered. And now, when she was finally ready to leave, he was telling her to remove the last symbol of their marriage, fine.Amelia slowly pulled the ring from her finger. She placed it in his palm.Damian stared at it.For a strange second, neither of them spoke. Then Amelia turned away.“Amelia.”She stopped. His voice sounded different this time.

Almost uncertain.“You’re not going to ask me anything?”She looked over her shoulder.“What am I supposed to ask?”His gaze hardened.“About Sophia.”Amelia smiled faintly.“You made the announcement without me. I think you’ve already answered everything.”

She walked away.

Outside the ballroom, the cold night air hit her face.Amelia hurried toward the waiting car, one hand gripping her clutch while the other rested protectively over her stomach. She had no idea what she was going to do.She only knew one thing. She couldn’t stay married to Damian Vaughn, not anymore. Her phone rang. The doctor’s name appeared on the screen.Amelia answered immediately.

“Hello?”

“Amelia, thank God. I’ve been trying to reach you.”She swallowed.“I saw the result.”

There was a pause.

“There’s something else you need to know.”

Amelia’s heart sank.“What?”

“The pregnancy test is positive, but that’s not why I called.”She stopped walking.“What do you mean?”The doctor lowered her voice.

“Your blood work showed something unusual.Amelia’s grip tightened around her phone.“Unusual how?”

“I’d rather explain this in person.”

“Doctor, please.”Another pause.

“The results suggest you may have been exposed to something that could affect the pregnancy.”Amelia’s face went pale.

“What?”

“I don’t want to alarm you over the phone. Come to the clinic first thing tomorrow morning.”The call ended.

Amelia stood beneath the hotel lights, completely frozen. She had thought tonight was about Damian.About Sophia, about the end of her marriage. But suddenly, something much more frightening had entered the picture.

Someone had been watching her health.Someone knew about her pregnancy.

And Amelia had no idea who.

Behind her, the ballroom doors opened. She turned.Damian stood in the entrance, staring at her,his eyes dropped to the hand resting over her stomach. For the first time that night, Amelia wondered,What would happen if Damian discovered the truth before she was ready to tell him?

Amelia read the message until the words blurred. He left you the evidence that could destroy the Vaughns. She called the number immediately,it was switched off.“Of course,” she muttered. She tried again, but the result was the same.Whoever had sent the message knew about her father’s company. They knew about the divorce agreement. Most disturbingly, they knew enough to warn her against signing it.She returned to her laptop and opened the dormant holding company’s registration details. The company had been established eleven years earlier, long before her father’s business collapsed. Its records showed almost no activity for years. Then, three months before her father’s death, a new director had been appointed.Richard Vaughn.Amelia went completely still.“Why would Damian’s father be involved in my father’s company?”She clicked through the available records, but the documents were restricted. To access the full file, she would need authorization from the company’s registered represen

Amelia arrived at Eleanor Price’s office ten minutes before their appointment, she had barely slept.Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the documents on her laptop, the strange message about Damian’s inheritance, and her father’s face on that frozen video.Your marriage was never supposed to happen the way it did. What had her father meant? And why had he left instructions that could only be carried out after her marriage ended?“Mrs. Vaughn?”Amelia looked up.A woman in her late fifties stood in the doorway, holding a slim leather folder.“I’m Eleanor Price.”Amelia rose to her feet. “Thank you for seeing me.”“Of course. Please, come in.”The office was quiet and tastefully furnished. Eleanor gestured toward a chair before sitting opposite her.“I must warn you that your father’s instructions were unusually strict.”“I’m beginning to realize that.”Eleanor studied her for a moment.“Have you signed the divorce papers?”“No.”“Do you intend to?”Amelia thought of Damian standing in

Damian’s final words followed me long after I left the storage facility. She’ll discover why you married her, I hated that sentence. Not because I believed it, but because a small, unwelcome part of me wondered whether there was something I had never known about the man I had spent five years loving.I climbed into a taxi and gave the driver my address. My phone vibrated before we reached the main road.Damian: We need to talk,I stared at the message.Me: We already did,his reply came almost immediately.Damian: Not about this.Me: Whatever it is, you can tell your wife.Three dots appeared, disappeared, then appeared again.Damian: This isn’t about Sophia.I locked my phone. For five years, Damian had perfected the art of making me wait. Wait for his attention. Wait for an explanation. Wait for the smallest indication that I mattered,I was done waiting. When I reached my apartment, I locked the door behind me and placed my handbag on the table, the envelope was still there. So was the flash

Pain, perhaps. For once, I couldn’t tell what Damian Vaughn was feeling. And I didn’t care enough to ask.I slipped the envelope into my handbag and walked toward the exit.“Where are you going?” he asked.“Home.”“I’ll take you.”“No, thank you.”“Amelia, it’s late.”“And?”His jaw tightened. “Can you stop making everything difficult for five minutes?”I turned around slowly.“Everything difficult? You announced another woman’s pregnancy in front of an entire room full of people. You handed me divorce papers as if you were dismissing an employee. Now you show up here and expect me to climb into your car because you say so?”He said nothing.“I’m not your responsibility anymore, Damian. Remember? You made that very clear.”I continued toward the door. This time, he followed.“I’m not trying to control you.”“Then stop following me.”“Someone accessed my father’s old business records. Someone else sent me a message warning me about you. And now I find you in a storage facility connected to you

Amelia stared at the man in front of her“Destroy both families?” she repeated. “What does that mean?”The man glanced toward the entrance.“We don’t have time for this.”“Then make time!” Her voice cracked. “You appear out of nowhere, tell me my father knew this day would come, and expect me to leave without an explanation?”His expression softened, but only for a moment.“You have your father’s eyes.”Amelia frowned. “Don’t talk about my father as if you knew him.”“I knew him better than you think.”“Then tell me what happened to him.”The man looked down at the photograph in her hand.“Your father made a deal with Richard Vaughn. A deal that was supposed to protect their businesses and secure their families’ futures.”“Richard Vaughn is Damian’s father.”“I know who he is.”“Then what went wrong?”“Greed.”The answer came without hesitation.Amelia shook her head. “My father lost everything before he died. His company collapsed, his partners abandoned him, and people whispered that he’d
