Chapter 2

Author: Gogo Coco
The maid nodded and immediately headed upstairs.

I stood where I was, making no attempt to stop her. There was nothing in my room anyway.

I had left the orphanage empty-handed, and after bringing me home, my family had completely forgotten to furnish my room.

Mia, however, looked uneasy.

"Dad, Layla just came home. We should respect her!"

She looked at me, tears streaming down her face.

"Layla, as long as you promise not to sneak those scary notes into my room in the middle of the night, I'll pretend none of this ever happened.

"Or… I can just move out."

Mom immediately took her hand.

"Silly pup, what are you talking about? The werewolf who hurt you is the one who should leave!!"

"She needs to be respected?" Noah snorted from the side. "Mia, don't make me laugh. She grew up in an orphanage. Does she even know what respect is?"

I froze, staring at them as they defended the werewolf who wasn't related to them by blood, as though it were the most natural thing in the world.

Ten minutes later, the maid came back downstairs. She was holding a red ink pen in her hand, her expression grim.

"Alpha," she said, placing the pen on the table. "We found this in Ms. Layla's wardrobe. Traces of her pheromones are still lingering on it."

A deathly silence fell over the living room.

The next second, Noah snatched up the pen and stormed toward me.

"A red ink pen reeking of your pheromones? What else do you have to say, Layla?"

I stared at the pen, utterly bewildered.

It was long and slender, and I had never seen anything like it before. I didn't even know what it was used for.

"I've never seen this before."

I shrugged, looking completely innocent.

"You're still denying it!" Noah roared.

In a fit of rage, he hurled the pen to the floor and barked, "I brought this custom-made pen back as a gift for Mia's awakening when I was traveling through other packs.

"Mia said she'd treasure it for the rest of her life and kept it locked away in her bookshelf. So why did it suddenly turn up in your wardrobe?"

"You actually stole Mia's things?" Mom gasped, covering her mouth.

Her whole body trembled with rage as she pointed at me and shrieked, "I can't believe you learned to steal at the orphanage! That's the kind of thing filthy rogues do!

"You're nothing but a disgrace to our pack. You're an embarrassment!!"

"Layla…" Mia said, her voice full of hurt. "If you wanted this pen, you could've just asked me.

"Even though I would've been reluctant to part with it, I would've given it to you if you'd asked.

"Why did you have to steal it?"

Their condescending expressions dragged me back to a painful memory from when I was ten.

It was the middle of winter, and heavy snow blanketed the orphanage. I had been playing in the yard when I spotted an abandoned crayon half-buried in the snow.

I was ten years old, but it was the first time I'd ever seen something that could produce such beautiful colors simply by drawing with it.

But an older werewolf from the orphanage had his eye on the crayon too.

He kicked me into the snow and stomped on my right hand. The crayon shattered beneath his boot, along with the bones in my fingers.

"You think you deserve something nice like this?" he snarled as he crushed my fingers beneath his boot.

I rolled across the ground, screaming in pain, but he wasn't punished at all.

To make matters worse, no one treated my broken fingers because the orphanage was too poor to hire a healer. In the end, the bones healed on their own, but my fingers were left crooked and deformed.

From then on, I never touched anything that even vaguely resembled a crayon. The sight of one brought back the excruciating pain of having my bones crushed—and the feeling of utter despair.

"I didn't steal it," I said, hiding my deformed fingers behind my back. "And I've never seen this thing before."

A deafening crash rang through the room as Dad smashed the table to pieces. He rose to his feet and looked at me with undisguised contempt.

"All the evidence is right in front of us, and you're still denying it. Our family and pack will never tolerate a liar and a thief!"

He turned to the maid.

"Go find the chief warrior. Tell him that we've caught a thief in our house who has been threatening us.

"Have the warriors take her away and put her through the Trial Ceremony. Let them decide whether she should be expelled from the pack. "

The moment I heard them say gold, I almost laughed. To them, money could apparently buy forgiveness for anything—even the guilt and pain they had caused me. "Keep your charity."I walked out the door without looking back. "I don't want your money or your house," I spat. "You and I have nothing to do with each other anymore.""Layla!" Mom cried out, chasing me to the door. "If you're really going to leave, at least take a cloak and a dagger to protect yourself."I didn't stop. I walked away with nothing, just like how I had arrived at this house in the first place—with nothing in my hands. I hadn't gone far when I heard hurried footsteps behind me. Noah caught up, carrying a heavy chest in his hands. "Layla, I know you won't forgive us, but you have to take this."He forcibly shoved the chest into my hands. "There's gold and a key inside," he said. "You don't have any money, and you can't even read. How are you supposed to survive?"Please, I'm begging you as your b

The living room fell silent again. Mom, Dad, and Noah looked at me with guilt etched across their faces.Noah reached out, wanting to pull me into a hug. "Layla, I was wrong," he said, his voice hoarse with remorse."Don't touch me with those precious hands of yours," I snapped, dodging his hand. "It makes me sick."Noah's hand froze in midair. "Layla…" he croaked, his eyes turning red. "I didn't know you'd suffered so much out there. I didn't know you'd never been to school or even learned how to read."His gaze fell on the red ink staining my hands and the scars covering them. "Please, just give me one more chance. Can you forgive me?"I took a deep breath. "Forgive you?"When you kicked me across the room just now, did that ever occur to you?"When you pinned my hand down and forced me to write that apology letter, nearly crushing my bones, did you think about giving me another chance?"Now that the truth is out, you're suddenly acting like the perfect big brother.

Dad glared at Mia, fury blazing in his eyes. He turned to the warriors and barked, "Go investigate! Pull up all the surveillance footage."I want to see for myself who has been lying to me and making a fool of us all!""Dad, no!" Mia scrambled toward him, throwing her arms around his leg. "How can you believe a stray wolf who grew up in an orphanage over the daughter you raised yourself?"Her eyes turned red as tears streamed down her face. "I'm your daughter," she cried. "You've loved and cared for me ever since I was little!"Mom also panicked and stepped in front of Dad. "Have you lost your mind? You're really going to investigate this?"What if this gets out of hand? What will pack members say about us?""Enough! All of you, shut up!!" Dad bellowed, pushing Mom aside. His powerful Alpha command instantly filled the room."I have to get to the bottom of this."He pointed at the curse notes scattered across the floor. "I can clearly read every word written on them.

I turned toward Mia. She was quietly backing away, clearly trying to slip out of the room.I immediately blocked her path and demanded, "You said I was the one who wrote the notes, didn't you? "Then let's call in the elders and have them investigate. Let's see if they can find any evidence that you framed me!"Panic flashed across Mom's face. "The elders? Absolutely not!" she blurted out. "This is just a small family matter. There's no need to involve the pack's elders."She was the first to object, desperately trying to protect Dad's reputation. Seeing this, Mia immediately put on a tearful expression and ducked behind Mom."Mom, Layla must've lost her mind after she's been through," she said, her voice trembling as though she were about to cry. "Layla, I swear I didn't write these curse notes. Even if the elders came to investigate, they'd only find your pheromones on the pen and paper. In the end, you'd still be exposed as the culprit."Just imagine how humiliating that

The entire room fell silent. Only the sound of my ragged breathing filled the air. Noah reached out to grab me, but he suddenly froze. His eyes widened. "What? You've never been to school?"He repeated the question in disbelief, as though he couldn't believe what he'd just heard. Mom swayed on her feet, nearly collapsing. The fury on her face was gone. "How could that be…" she whispered. Even Dad, who had always carried himself with the authority of an Alpha, was stunned. A flicker of disbelief flashed across his intimidating red eyes. "You spent more than a decade in an orphanage in that pack and never went to school before?" he asked, clearly struggling to comprehend it. I looked at them coldly—my biological parents, the most powerful Alpha and Luna in the entire pack."That's right. I never went to school."I smiled wryly. "Is that really so strange?"That orphanage only took in disabled and lost pups. The caretakers there were short-tempered and didn't care

"I'm not writing it," I said through gritted teeth, mustering all my strength to pull my hand away.Dad's expression darkened. He stormed over, prying open my tightly clenched fist and forcing the expensive pen into my hand. I could barely breathe. The bones I'd broken when I was ten felt as though they were snapping all over again, and the sensation sent a fresh wave of pain through me."Hold the pen properly!" Dad roared. He forced my fingers around it, pressing the nib hard against the blank sheet of paper. "If you can't write, then draw it," he snarled. "I don't care how you do it—just get something on that paper!"My breathing grew ragged, and a buzzing filled my head. My wolf grew restless with fear, barely holding on to consciousness."I'm not writing it!" I shouted. I fought back with all my strength, terror overwhelming me. A sharp ripping sound filled the air as the pen tore through the paper. In the struggle, the expensive fountain pen was completely crushe
